Universal Control is exactly what keeps one using apple ecosystem (maybe not every apple user will use it, for sure).
That's really magic! Crazy!

I ditched the Symless software that I've been using for years to share my keyboard and mouse across the three macOS computers I have on my desk (personal, work laptop, Plex server) and after just a little jiggling and a couple reboots, it worked like a charm. This morning, though, I had to remote into my work laptop and Plex server to wake them up in order for Universal Control to remember it was an option. There's got to be a better way.

I think I accidentally did this when trying to set up Universal Control. All three monitors (my iMac, MacBook, and a display connected to the iMac) were mirroring my iMac display.
Sounds like you turned Airplay display mirroring on to the Macbook and Sidecar display mirroring to the iPad

You can even have one iPad attached via sidecar and universal control simultaneously. In my current setting, I can move the cursor down into the mac sidecar display, and if I move further down, I get the iPad dock (and can then switch to the iPad home screen).

Nice! I got this working once, but after a restart I couldn't select the same iPad to use both UC and Sidecar (had to be one or the other), which is why I didn't highlight it in the article. I think it's either still buggy, and hopefully Apple will straighten it out with an update, or Apple never intended it to work in this way.

Did you update iPadOS on the mini? It works perfectly on mine.

Also, the screen needs to be "on" before initiating to link to the iPad, I found.
yes for both??‍♂️?
I could sidecar the Mac screen to the iPad mini but I cannot move my Mac cursor to it. But the iPad Pro works flawlessly.

Meanwhile I'm shopping for a new monitor because my new 14in MBP can't connect to mine with USB C even though it works fine with my windows work laptop.

Has anyone figured out how to get iPad scrolling to not be "natural scrolling" when you use your mouse's scroll wheel?

EDIT: OK, this one I figured out. Settings > General > Trackpad & Mouse.

I had it working so that i could have universal control and sidecar upon reading the article. that’s perfect for me… however this has stopped working and now its either one or the other11 grrrrr

edit; and the shift key doesn’t work when typing on ipad

For me it does not work at all between my iPad Air 4 and MacBook Pro 14 inch with everything enabled. It just „does not“ work. I can only extend my Mac screen. Don’t know if it is wifi related. I doubt it. It’s a standard FRITZ!box router.

When I move my cursor to the border of my Mac, nothing happens
are you signed in with the same iCloud account on all devices? WiFi and BT enabled?

Does Sidecar work between two Macs - or is it only Mac -> iPad?

Otherwise, it would be rather useful for anybody about to have a spare 5k iMac...
Trust me you don’t want to do this unless you have a really beefy machine
Sidecar requires you to encode the “virtual monitor” and send it over to the receiving machine so you’d be encoding 5K video all the time in order to make this work.
Not to mention you’d need to keep your 5K iMac running all the time with macOS and everything.

If you absolutely want to you can do it with Luna Display (hardware solution) or AirServer (software only), but it performed horribly when I tried on my M1 MBA

Of course this is assuming you want to take advantage of that 5K panel, if you’re happy to use it as a 1440p display with awful compression artifacting you can absolutely make it work

Universal control works between my 2021 MBP and my iPad Pro, but not with my iPad mini 6.

Also as shown in the screenshot of the article, why the iPad mini 6 is only available as a side car display? Anyone knows why?
worked with my 2021 MBP and iPad mini 5

I’d love to be able to use universal control from my 12.9 iPad Pro with my 11 iPad Pro.

Before macOS 12.3 and iPadOS 15.4 were released to the public, many beta testers who tried Universal Control were unable to get it working if they were already using an iPad in Sidecar mode, but it turns out that in the final release you can actually enable both Universal Control and Sidecar simultaneously on different devices, provided your setup allows for this.

universal-control-sidecar.jpg

In the final version of macOS 12.3, the "Add Display" options in the Displays preference pane distinguishes between devices available to connect via Universal Control and devices available to be used as extended displays, including iPads via Sidecar.

This means that you can now, for example, connect your Mac to one ‌iPad‌ via ‌Sidecar‌ for some extra macOS screen space, and on the other side of your Mac you could control a second ‌iPad‌ or Mac using your main Mac's keyboard and trackpad.

Differences Between Universal Control and Sidecar

For those unfamiliar with the two modes and the differences between them, here's a quick recap. With ‌Universal Control‌, if you have a Mac and an ‌iPad‌ next to each other, or even multiple Macs and iPads, you can use the keyboard and cursor on one device across all of them. So, for example, if you have a MacBook Pro and an ‌iPad‌ on your desk, the MacBook Pro's trackpad can be used over on the ‌‌iPad‌‌ just by swiping across, and the Mac's keyboard will become the ‌iPad‌'s input device. The same is also true of the ‌‌iPad‌‌ if you have a keyboard attached to it.

‌Sidecar‌ works differently. Announced in 2019 as part of macOS Catalina, ‌Sidecar‌ is designed to let you use an ‌iPad‌ as a secondary display for your Mac. Up to one ‌iPad‌ can be used to either mirror the content on your Mac's display or turn it into a secondary display for extra screen real estate in macOS.

To be clear, ‌Universal Control‌ lets you use your Mac's keyboard and trackpad to navigate your ‌iPad‌, but it functions over two different operating systems – macOS and iPadOS. Unlike Sidecar, it does not extend your Mac's display to the ‌iPad‌, it simply allows the keyboard and mouse/trackpad of one device to be used to control one or more other devices. If you want your Mac's content displayed on a nearby ‌iPad‌, you'll need to use ‌Sidecar‌, but you cannot control the same device with ‌Universal Control‌.

With all that said, however, provided you have enough iPads and Macs, it turns out that you can in fact use ‌Sidecar‌ and ‌Universal Control‌ at the same time and enjoy the best of both worlds. Note that Universal Control is still technically in beta, so some setups may throw up lingering bugs.
For more information on how to set up an iPad in Sidecar while also controlling additional Macs and/or iPads using Universal Control, be sure to check out our dedicated how-to article.

I use a programm called Barier that do the same as universal control, my MacBook Pro is the main device and my Linux PCs akd Workstation all are controlled by the keyboard and touchbar of my Mac.

Doesn’t let you add iPad’s into the mix I’ll bet.

After futzing with it for 45 minutes I can't get it to work. Everything on Mac & iPad Pro match all the 'requirements' but no joy. I can Extend to the iPad Pro but it just won't do Universal Control. Even tried with the VPNs turned off...

If you’re still unable to use it then try signing out of your iCloud account on the device not working and then back in. Yesterday after nearly giving up, I signed out of iCloud on my iPad then logged back in; that did the trick. I realized this when I became aware Handoff wasn’t working.

Anyone have a trick to keep mirror/screen share back in the top menu? I miss being able to stream directly to my Apple TV with two clicks.
