Not sure whether the link will work for those outside the UK, but here it is in a nutshell:

There were no "three kids" playing football with the dog. The dog belonged to the guy who reported the story. There was a "domestic incident" at his home, while a small child played with the dog, during which the puppy was injured (how??????????). The whole story was made up as the guy was worried about what the animal rescue centre would think.

Surprise, surprise, the police won't be doing anything about it. The RSPCA (UK-wide animal conservation group) may do their own investigation.

Here's a photo of the guy concerned. Looks like a nice chap. Not.

As for PETA, I'm a vegetarian, pro-environment liberal. Whilst their cause is worthy (advocating and protecting animal rights), some of their methods could do with a bit of extra thought. Sure, they might change a few minds, but how many people do they alienate through questionable methods?

haha nice development i guess thats good news for those complaining about the teenagers and wishing that they were sent to prison...etc.

that guy's just sick. not only did he effectively kill an innocent puppy but he lied about it. he tried to pass himself off as the "rescuer" of the puppy and that's the worst thing. i hope he gets the same punishment discussed for the kids. is there capital punishment in the UK?

No capital punishment in the UK, or in the whole of Europe for that matter.

If the guy's child was "playing" (or, more likely, abusing) the puppy, why didn't he stop it? How can a small infant hurt a puppy so much as to cause it brain damage and other terrible injuries without the parent noticing?

Personally, I would take the guy's kids away from him permanently, fine him, ban him and his family from owning any animal, ban him and his family from any pet store, stick him in jail for five years and give him 10000 hours community service when he gets freed. Oh, and make him have lots and lots of painful laser surgery to get rid of those crappy tattoos.

Cruelty to animals is sickening. There is no justification for it.

I don't know what's more appalling, the fact that three kids would have kicked a puppy around (even though it's been disproved as being just one moron) or the solutions some of the posters here are suggesting for these children. Excuse me, allow me to punctuate clearly: THESE CHILDREN. I'm reading the same kind of discourse in the granny rapist thread. It just boggles my mind.

Put them all into a same room and let them get beat up by other people? Castrate them?? Have them molested and raped??? Are you people for real? I can understand how some people feel angry, me the first, but your "solutions" are the kind of actions going on in places like Bangkok and Congo where UNICEF is working like mad to put an end to such practices. Do you honestly think that enforcing any of these penalties will steer them right and not screw them up more? I honestly hope that none of you will ever have your own children in a world where people would allow them to be raped as punishment.

These are kids. Kids do NOT realise what they are "getting away with" since laws are not as severe as they are towards adults. Kids who do these types of actions should be pitied. Not the simple pity either, the kind of pity you would never want someone to feel towards you. The same pity you should feel when an eight year old is kidnapped into a revolutionary army and forced to kill people, or sold into sex slavery.

Children who perform acts like this, acts that boggle the mind like the puppy and the grandmother, are children without direction. How can you put them on trial as an adult if they don't even have the right to vote? Or a social security number? Or the right to sign off their own name for their very own credit card? There are deadbeat parents right and left and unfortunately this is the product of negligence. Some people don't deserve to be parents. Does that mean their children (who, really, didn't ask to be brought into the world) don't deserve to live? I think they don't deserve the lives they were given, and deserve to be treated with love and respect like any child does.

I don't care how horrifying the actions of a child are, a child always has a chance at redemption. Consequences? Hell yeah, there should be consequences. But as long as you accept that a person develops his or her personality throughout his or her youth, then you can accept that children can change if they are given the tools and the help to change.

As I stated in another thread, our society does not teach anyone to take responsibility for our actions. Our governments don't even take responsibility for their own actions, passing the buck right and left, no one have the gumption to walk up and say "Yeah, we f'd up, we're sorry, we'll try and make it better." Who are we supposed to model ourselves off if those we put in a position of power don't fess up to what they do? Again, do our children need to suffer because of that?

I guess it's my utter shock that so many people feel such hostility towards children that made me write this. Complete and unconditional shock.

Gluemeat, good call. While children need some boundaries sometimes, extreme punishment is only harmful to the child. If the intent is really to rehabilitate, rather than inflict harm upon the perpetrator (which is pointless), you need to figure out what's wrong in the kid's head, not have a child molester rape them... good god.

iluze, thank you for that perspective, mental illness is never fun to own up to. It really underscores the fact that this is a mental illness, not some simple prank... As I said earlier, evidence shows children who abuse animals are at a higher risk for abusive crime later. I think I'd feel safer if the kid were in therapy than in juvenile detention for a few years... just long enough to learn the ropes and fall into a lifestyle.

It just gets worse and worse. A number of thugs (again, in the UK) have skewered a duck with a screwdriver: story here. Amazingly, the duck is still alive, though at present it is unclear whether it will live. There is a photo of someone (presumably at the animal shelter) holding the duck (a mallard) with the screwdriver still through its right side, as well as an X-ray of the duck, showing the 5" (25cm) shaft of the screwdriver. Equally amazing, no major organs have been hit.

I love ducks. They're one of my favourite animals (not to eat: I'm a vegetarian). Why do people do this sort of thing?

gluemeat: nice post.

Paul, while the points by the ones you mention have validity; there was a post on the boards here from someone that said that children need to be treated as adults early on (was in reference to punishment).

I am not sure why, but kids are "aging" faster with each new generation. For that reason some of the "time tested" methods of dealing with crimes of youth are no longer valid IMO.

Unfortunately I also see it as a no win situation. If you take and provide mental health care, and they commit a crime again - we are soft on the offenders. Yet, if we take and incarcerate the offenders we risk creating a worse criminal.

First, it is impolite to yell in the forums (caps).

Second, the fox hunt issue in the UK is better discussed in the Political Forum.

If you were to post the issue over there, I for one would be interested in hearing about the issues from both sides. And how fox hunts differ in the UK vs. the US.

Peace.

Agreed, he looks like a real rough character. That is awful to try to pass a thing like that off on children. He definitely needs to send a long time in prison. He would not be a candidate for community service, helping in a animal shelter.

I find it impolite to rip foxes apart with dogs. Im not going to start a new thread on fox hunting because there is no reasoning with the morons that support it, and I will only end up getting really annoyed.

The reason I posted it here was because I find it mad that everyone is complaining about bad kids that kick animals or whatever, when there are thousands of adults setting the example that animal cruelty is acceptable.

If you want better treatment of animals, start at the top.

That would work.

Chip, I think the opposite may be true. Kids are not aging faster, they're emulating adults at an earlier age, but their mindsets are more simplistic and childlike than the generations before, probably due to lack of adult guidance in complex situations. Unfortunately, these simple-minded, black and white valued kids turn into the same type of adults, people who are more likely to turn to a simplistic solution like violence instead of more difficult and unwieldy negotiations and communications.

If your neighbor continues to back his car out over your rose garden out front, you're supposed to talk to him, let him know that it upsets you and find out what you can do to keep it from happening in the future. These days, instead of confronting the neighbor, we'd bottle up the anger until the "last straw" and then go over and stab his tires or shoot him in the chest. These are "more adult" reactions? I think not... - j
