If you're not interested, I'll take your free mini! :D

Well you could still take advantage of the offer - claim the free ipod mini and sell it on eBay or wherever, then use the proceeds towards buying some extra RAM or accessories. Or simply 'cash back'!

Hello. I think you will probably get a mixed response to your question, with the majority of people advising you to wait, or to step up to the PowerBook line (though this costs around 50% more).

Agreed, the iBook in its current state is looking a little 'stale' when you consider the fact that is hasn't been updated since last October. However, it is still a VERY CAPABLE machine and it will more than handle the applications you mentioned.

I played the waiting game for a couple of months and really wish I hadn't bothered - that was just lost time. In the end I decided to buy a PowerBook because it suited my needs better than the iBook anyway, plus the extra expense wasn't an issue. My sister has just purchased an iBook and it's great. I have used both machines and the iBook is a little slower - that is to be expected after all - but we are about to upgrade the RAM as it's only got 256B at the moment, so hopefully that will improve performance. It is perfect for users who like her (and like you by the sound of it) will mostly be web browsing, using email, itunes etc and not doing anything too processor intensive.

The problem with Apple is that you never know when there will be an update until it happens. The reason why there are so many 'new ibooks next tuesday' threads at the moment and people advising not to buy is because historically the ibooks have had fairly regular [minor] updates around April and October. The Spring update appears to have been skipped this year. It wouldn't be fair for me to advise you whether to buy now or not, that is entirely your call. You could choose to wait and then find the ibooks *do* get updated, but that the update is so minor you wished you hadn't bothered waiting! Set yourself a deadline if you do choose to wait.

Should you decide to go for the current iBook, it is advisable to upgrade the hard disk to 60GB, as 30 isn't really enough these days and the cost of the upgrade is next to nothing. You might also choose to add Bluetooth - useful for connecting your mobile phone etc. Also consider upgrading the RAM to 512 or more but don't do this through Apple - buy this later on from a third party vendor such as Crucial as this works out a lot cheaper.

I've had my PowerBook now for 3 or 4 weeks - it's my first Mac and I'm loving it. It does indeed scream beauty. I will never use Windows again - well only for work anyway!

I agree. I ordered my iBook last friday, but cancelled the order after I thought about the whol 500,000,000 countdown. I'm going to wait till this Tuesday (July 19, exactly 9 months since the last update), or till the end of the countdown, whichever comes last, and then order. That will be late July. Why would they update them, then update them again a month and a half later at Paris expo?

Simple, they wouldn't update again at the Expo.

wow. at the apparent attrition rate of all iBook threads, i hope you guys can keep this open. my two cents say just buy it. i just did, and it is a great feeling!

and i say wait 500,000,000 event is coming soon.

i'm going to be lmao when the new ibooks come out next tuesday and all of you who told us to buy now look in awe when we get supercool features.

Put a hamster in a pool of mud, if he runs out then there'll be updates soon. If he slowly walks out then they'll be a while.

The reality is, the updates have been a sure thing for the past 3 months. Updates with the iMacs, the WWDC, end of promo #1, Education Expo, the enigmatic media event...... the list goes on.

From what you've said you need it for, I'd say wait a couple more weeks if you can and if still no updates then order the iBook with more RAM and more Hard drive. Because from what you've said you need it for, it'll do just fine.

And don't go Dell!!! Have you used Tiger yet? This is by far the best OS I've ever used!!

Under the ibook in the hardware section of the canadian apple store, it still lists "Panther" as the OS. For a computer company, they do a pretty bad job of updating their website.

At the present rate the uk countdown will reach the magic number in 4.3 days

Does it make sense?

No. Not at all. Either wait or, if you really need a Notebook now, get a Windows Notebook and buy a Mac once the x86 portable Macs are available.

NO!!!! There is never a good reason to buy a Windows notebook when you don't absolutely require Windows.

500,000,000 is the magic number guys (www.apple.com)
Agreed. Give it 3-4 days once the half billion milestone is reached, before Apple needs to update their home page again. Most likely with new iBook introductions coming next Tuesday (July 19, 2005)

Dont be stupid.
The iPod Mini Promotion is going till 24.9. Mac Expo at Paris.

Do you really think, Apple sells "new" iBook + iPod Mini for the same price?!

I dont think that there will be an update till September...

No iBooks update yet

Apple will not update the iBooks at anytime soon. Why? The Apple website says that the iBooks are shipped within the same business day, not five to seven business days yet.

I, Mood, created this post under the advice of Negrodamus

Thank you Negrodamus for your help.

Going back to the main point of this thread, many threads have been made concerning when the Apple computers will be updated. It's been almost a year for many products especially the iBook, and many of you are recomennding people to buy NOW.

I don't think this is so wise. Why?

I did some simple math, and found out that when the 500,000,000 songs are reached it will be around monday (afternoonish), which gives time to announce winners, prizes, etc.

Also note the date July 19th (next Tuesday), not only is that one day after my mom's birthday but also is a sweet point in the month because it is very close to the middle of the month which makes it an excellent time to update products (when students are beginning to buy laptops, much like myself). Most students tend to get their laptops around mid july to early august, and this date makes sense.

Steve Jobs promised us new products to come very soon at the last Keynote, and I believe July 19th is the date. Contrary to people saying that they will not be updated til' at least September, I beleive they will be. People are highlighting the Paris event which happens one day after the Cram and Jam deal ends but don't forget that the iTunes 500,000,000 event is very important as well.

If the Apple line does not get updated next week, well then chop my balls off and call me Annie, but I'm placing my bets on next Tuesday. At that point if they do not update them, I will buy an iBook. I still have two weeks (another two tuesdays to wait!) to return the iBook if new ones come out, and I figure if new ones come out, the 10 percent restocking fee will be negligible in the longrun (better screen [widescreen?], better video card, bigger hdd, bigger ram, better battery life?,more default peripherals, ). There was a time when the G4 Cube, if i remember, surprassed the Powermac for a month or so, when Apple update them, so its still possible that the iBook may be as powerful or even more powerful than the Powerbook for a couple of weeks or that the Powerbook get updated as well.

So to end things, use your common sense, do NOT buy now. The wait is almost over, Apple MUST update their product lines now or lose a huge chunk of their sales and customers. In these extra days, save the extra money for something you couldn't quite afford for the Apple computer (like a superdrive), more ram, etc.

Well the 14" ibook (which is better for reading the FULL length of the page for students, saves scrolling time) is on sale for $999 with an ipod free, too, I think, at my University store now. That seems like a good deal to me now.

I don't know how it would be better for reading full pages, it has the same resolution as the 12". I don't really like the 14"ers for that reason. The pixels are stretched, so it's not as sharp. Plus, I love the portability of the 12" iBook.
