I'm looking for advice....I can't decide if I should buy an iphone now or wait. I'm no longer tied to a contract but I don't want to get burned in a few months with a major update. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No matter when you buy, you're going to get burned with a major update.

Exactly. That's why you can't just keep waiting and waiting.

I'm planning on making an iPhone purchase in 2 weeks, upon my arrival in Los Angeles. The only way I won't buy one the day after I arrive is if there is an announcement (or a really really strong rumour) in the next 2 weeks that a new iPhone is on the way. And, if they announce a new one within the first 14 days of my purchase, I'll return it and buy the new one when that comes out.

Either way, I know that I'll be happy with whichever iPhone I get- the one that exists, or the imaginary magical version 2 that folds your laundry and fetches you beers. Worst case scenario, I'll keep iPhone1 for a year and give it to my wife when I get the new version.

Anyway, I really don't think that 3G will be the Q1/Q2 upgrade everyone is waiting for. I think it will be a larger capacity iPhone- a 16GB version. My guess is that 3G will be announced in the fall. I don't think that Apple wants to p*ss off AT&T after they spent so much time and effort building their EDGE network.

Wow apparently there is now a 16 GB version.. its $499.

If they release a 3G version in the future, do you think it will cost a lot more than $499?? Or do you think they could come out with a 32 GB version? Haha.. well I still only have $420 in my Iphone fund, need just a little more.
