Would you care to underwrite the attempt?
If this was say a MiniMac, with wifi, and could talk to his main machine, then you might have something.

Erm... why not buy a safe?
See, this is something I've been considering for a few months now. I'm thinking about traipsing a LAN and power cable from my router to a drive kept buried in the garden. Or possibly in the garage (detached from the house). I'd use it to keep a mirror of my main computers hard drives, just incase there is a fire or my any of my computers are stolen.
And when I say I've considered this, I've only been looking up long cables to do this with. Haven't even considered weather effects, condensation etc.
I might set this up soon with a test drive just to see if it works.
IMO, a more logical approach to off-site backup would be to rent a safe deposit box at a local bank, store the hard drive there, and take it out to back up your data to it at an interval of your choice (once a month, once every two months, etc.)
Will this be wireless, or will you have to consider line loss in your calculations?
Fire proof safe?
This. Just be sure to bolt it to the floor so a thief can't just pick it up and walk away. Bonus: store your passport and other sensitive documents in it too!
Honestly, a good fire safe is something every home should have...
If you look at the cheaper 30-minute-rating models, you will find that they have water "cells" in the walls, to dispense heat via evaporation.
This moisture might have a negative impact on the contents.

Put something that you don't mind damaging in the case to test the theory. I've seen pelican cases dropped, driven over and submerged. Lets see what happens when you put one underground.
