Currently Running 2G with new Firmware on and looking to get myself a 3G in next few weeks

http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

This is the low down on our tools for use with the 2.2.1 firmare from Apple, read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Please note that the Windows version of QuickPwn has been updated to version 2.2.5-2

1. GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone running 2.2 firmware and you want to keep your ability to use yellowns0w (or the option to use it in the future) do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.
2. Yellowsn0w will NOT work with the baseband version (02.30.03) that is present in the recent 2.2.1 update. If you want to use Yellownsn0w you will need to create and restore using a custom .ipsw that will allow you to update safely to 2.2.1 without applying the 02.30.03 baseband update. You’ll then have a 3G iPhone running 2.2.1 with an older baseband version that is still vulnerable to yellowsn0w, following these steps ensures that yellowsn0w will still operate.
3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
5. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest versions of PwnageTool and QuickPwn.
6. These apps are suitable for the recent 2.2.1 release.
7. The Yellowsn0w version has been updated to 0.9.7. Yellowsn0w is available from Cydia or Installer - this version allows compatibility with pwned 2.2.1 system (not baseband). Again„ remember 0.9.7 yellowsn0w DOES NOT WORK WITH 2.2.1 (02.30.03) directly - you need to be running a ‘pwned’ version of 2.2.1 which didn’t upgrade the baseband during the restore/upgrade.
8. Users of OS X 10.5.6 will be unable to use DFU mode correctly, please see the note towards the end of this post to easily fix this issue.

Baseband 101

The ‘baseband’ is the generic name given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network. Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 2.2.1 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband. This could be bad for certain people, depending on your ultimate aim.

SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G

This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, simply upgrade to 2.2.1 using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to Pwn and Jailbreak. This will add Cydia and Installer too.

Locked iPhone 3G - Preserve Baseband

This applies if you have a locked iPhone 3G and you wish to update to 2.2.1 but preserve the iPhone’s current baseband software. Preserving the baseband will ensure that you can still use “yellowsn0w” the iPhone 3G unlock application. To upgrade your phone to 2.2.1 and preserve the state of the baseband you need to create a custom .ipsw with PwnageTool. This custom .ipsw will not contain the baseband update but of course will still give you any new stuff from 2.2.1

There are plenty of tutorials about this process on the web, but PwnageTool contains intuitive graphics and easy to follow prompts that should have you up and running in no time at all. Please note: PwnageTool is only available for Mac OS X.

Locked iPhone 3G

If you are using your iPhone with one carrier and have no interest in the possibility of an iPhone 3G unlock in the near future then just restore or upgrade to 2.2.1 using iTunes and use QuickPwn to Jailbreak and add Cydia and Installer.

iPhone 2G (1st Generation)

Update or Restore your iPhone 2G with iTunes then run QuickPwn to do the magic, ‘nuff said, you don’t need to worry about anything.

iPod Touch 1G (Original iPod Touch)

Update to 2.2.1 with iTunes and run QuickPwn.

iPod Touch 2G (New iPod Touch)

Sorry, no support at this time, but Redsn0w is being actively researched and developed.

Fixing DFU mode on 10.5.6

As noted previously OS X 10.5.6 introduced a bug that affected the use of DFU mode. with some Macs. There have been previously published hacks and techniques to fix this, but here is another method that can be used to temporarily restore DFU functionality in order to use QuickPwn or PwnageTool.

1. You will need an account with ADC (Apple Developer Connection) this is free and takes a few minutes to sign up, you should read the terms and conditions carefully and you should only sign up if you are thinking of developing applications in the future - http://developer.apple.com/mac/
2. Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily-315.4-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.5 Build 9F33” (yes, that is a “5” in 10.5.5 - this is a developer debug package of the USB kernel extension).
3. Unplug non-vital USB equipment, such as external DVD writers, USB scanners, USB mass storage devices, at the most leave a Keyboard and Mouse connected.
4. Install IOUSBFamily-315.4.1.pkg from within the disk image
5. Reboot your system!
6. Perform necessary DFU activity with QuickPwn or PwnageTool.
7. Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily-327.4.0-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.6 Build 9G55”
8. Intall IOUSBFamily-327.4.0.pkg from within the disk image
9. Reboot your system!
10. Reattach your USB peripherals.

Hi I don't know if this is the correct place to put this question but here it goes.
I have a Iphone 3g 16G White, it was originally blocked to Vodafone Portugal, but since I was moving out of the country I paid to have the sim Unlock. So now I am in the UK using O2 UK with the Iphone legally sim-unlocked. I wanted to use some of the apps that cydia provide but since my Iphone has been legally unlocked I am not sure If I will have any problems.
Can someone tell me if I can do it safetly and if so what do I need to do?

Thank you all

Hi I have a 2G Iphone. I had succesfully unlocked it many times before but now i can't. Last time i unlocked the 2.1 firmware and then i updated it to 2.2 original firmware. then the iphone worked correctly when one time i restarted it and it locked.

i tried many times to unlocked it again but when i chose the unlock firmware(2.0 or 2.1 or 2.2) to be installed, itunes showed me "error 20".

i don't know what to do. PLEASE HELP

Thank you all

Sorry for the naive question but if I update from 2.2 to 2.2.1 via Pwnage tool, will I keep my apps, themes, etc?

not sure if it's mentioned anywhere but i had a big problem with the decompression thing with the .ispw file.

this is the only thing i could find at first....

Remember, don’t use “The Unarchiver” to decompress the .tbz file that you download with bittorrent, use “Archive Utility” that ships with OS X.

this is what's listed on the dev team web site and it means absolutely NOTHING to me. i have no idea how to use the "archive utility." after searching i found sites saying i need to download an unarchiver and all this other bs..... about an hour later i found a youtube video that solved my problem. all you have to do is go to your trash and find the .ispw.zip file and delete the .zip at the end of it.................................. no idea why they couldnt just put that on their site instead of "use the archive utility that ships with os x" if this isnt already mentioned somewhere it would be great if you could add it do the quickpwn description. because other than this little problem, the rest of the process is incredibly simple

Unlock Only

I brought a 2G iPhone to China. I just want to unlock it so I can use a China Mobile sim. I do not want to use Cydia or install any other utilities and I don't need the pineapple logo.

I also want the latest firmware, etc. I used QuickPwn to unlock and jailbreak and it works fine, but how can I unlock only and keep everything else up to date?

FAQ

DFU MODE

Turn off your phone by holding power, sliding to power off, and waiting for it to power off. Do not take the phone off the pc connection! If you do, you must start over.

a) Wait 5 seconds.
b) Hold the power button for 5 seconds.
c) Press the home and power buttons for 10 seconds.
d) Let go off the power button and keep holding the home button for up to 30 seconds.

Problems?

If you have a problem and were able to solve it, please let me know what you did so I can include it here for others to benefit from.

Problem 1.
PwnageTool 2.0 is a Mac only program. Windows users should go to this site.

Problem 2.
After installing 2.0, Mail.app kept crashing on start, and Safari wouldn't accept cookies. There are three solutions:

1 - This happens when you restore email account settings from iTunes. Set them manually and you won't have this problem.

2 - Restore to your custom ipsw (you don’t need to DFU restore if you are Pwned, normal restore will work). Then select "Set up as a new iPhone" when iTunes prompts you. Your first sync will bring back all of your settings anyway.

3 - Fix by installing OpenSSH from Cydia. Log in as root with the password alpine and enter the following in the Terminal:

* chmod 777 /var/mobile/Library/Mail
* chown mobile /var/mobile/Library/Cookies/
* chown mobile /var/mobile/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist

Problem 3.
PwnageTool won't run on PPC Macs.

Make sure you do not have any programs running, then move your ~/Library/Caches folder to the trash. Do the same for the /Library/Caches folder. Reboot the Mac.

Problem 4.
If you are a legitimate AT&T customer with a 3G iPhone and you do not have service after Pwning, then uncheck Activate during the Pwnage process. Go to general settings and turn off 3G and then turn it back on again. Also make sure you have an Pwned x122220000 ipsw in your ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support folder.

Problem 5.
PwnageTool 2.0 does not launch, and only bounces in the dock. The solution is:

* Launch PwnageTool
* Launch Activity Monitor (found in Applications/Utilities on your Mac)
* Look for a process called "ps" and quit or force quit it. Alternatively you can use the Terminal to do this by entering "kill -9 -1" but this will quit the Finder and all running programs and reload.

Problem 6.
If you get Error 1600 from iTunes (or if you see in your log a failure to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw), then create a folder called Device Support here: ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support If that directory already exists, then remove any files in it. Restart PwnageTool and begin again.

Problem 7.
If DFU restores are giving you trouble, another solution is to use the first version of PwnageTool with 1.1.4 firmware. Once you are Pwned on 1.1.4, you can perform a normal recovery mode restore to your custom 2.0 ipsw. Note: the iPhone does not need to be pre-Pwned to be able to DFU restore into a Pwned ipsw. It needs to be pre-Pwned only for normal recovery mode restores of a custom ipsw.

Problem 8.
Loss of EDGE service on T-Mobile. You receive the message: "Could not activate cellular data network: you are not subscribed to a cellular data service." Press Settings, General, Reset, Reset Network Settings. Service should now be restored.

If you DFU restore to the original 2.0 firmware, your unlock will remain intact. To undo the unlock you would need to run BootNeuter and relock the iPhone, then restore it back to 2.0.

Problem 9.
I have no sound/My iPhone is acting strange after being pwned successfully? What is going on?

First of all - ALWAYS set up your iPhone as a "new" phone - never restore from backup unless your phone was not previously jailbreaked!

WARNING! Restoring a backup of a previously jailbreaked phone can cause a number of issues only fixable by another restore so don't restore from a back up of a previously jailbreaked phone!

If you have set up your phone as new and are still having issues then do a full settings reset from settings>general>reset>reset all settings and that should fix it!

I PWNED MY IPHONE/IPOD WITH THE WRONG FIRMWARE! ITUNES SAYS MY IPHONE IS AN IPOD (or vice versa) WHAT CAN I DO?

Problem 10.
MY PHONE WON'T TURN ON! ITS REBOOTING CONSTANTLY! I HAVE CONSTANTLY SCROLLING TEXT! and ANY OTHER ISSUE WHERE PHONE IS NON RESPONSIVE

You can fix this!

Put your phone into DFU mode.

Restore to apple original firmware and you can start over again!

---------------------------------------------------------------

iTunes Error Messages - What they mean and how to fix them!

Error 1013/1014/1015 - This error message occurs when you downgrade or upgrade to a different baseband than the firmware your restoring to has. This message does NOT mean the restore failed - it simply means the phone firmware does not match the baseband. Use iLiberty/Independence to kick the phone into normal mode and out of recovery mode and it will work.

Error 6 and 10 - This error message is because of a problem with your firmware - this message will occur most often because of using unsuitable boot/recovery images. Make a new custom firmware to fix this and use suitable boot images or use the standard images that came with the pwnage software.

Error 1603/1604 - 160? something

IF YOU ARE RESTORING TO A STANDARD APPLE FIRMWARE *NOT CUSTOM FIRMWARE"

This error is down to itunes not liking your USB ports on your computer. Use a different USB slot or a different computer if possible. That is the easiest fix!

IF YOU ARE RESTORING TO A CUSTOM FIRMWARE AFTER RESTORING FROM STANDARD APPLE FIRMWARE

IF you have pwned your phone once and then restored back to apple original firmware successfully and THEN tried to restore custom firmware you WILL get
an error in iTunes as the apple firmware "unpawned" your phone. You have to repwn it using iPwner and then you can restore using custom firmware.

IF YOU ARE RESTORING TO CUSTOM FIRMWARE AND YOUR PHONE IS STILL PWNED

See "if your restoring to apple firmware" above as it is the same issue.

BootNeuter Error 5: This is because you upgraded to the 2.0 beta firmware without unlocking first in 1.1.4 like your supposed to. You will have to restore to 1.1.4 unlocked and then delete the 2.0 baseband. You can do this by adding iclarified to the installer sources (as explained in the localization part below) then select "Delete 1.2 Baseband" - install that and let it delete your baseband. You MUST then restore to 1.1.4 apple original firmware and then re-pwn your phone and restore to 1.1.4 custom unlocked before BootNeuter will work again.

can i delete my baseband ..latest one for the 2.2.1 in this way .. if yes could you explain please .. i have upgraded my iphone to 2.2.1 and i am unable to use yellowsn0w .. thank's

Unfortunately, no. The is why the Dev Team put the "Golden Rule" on the top of their page in bold:
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

Hopefully they will be able to release an update soon. :)

Hi I have an iPhone 3G running 2.2.1_5H11 and I'm using the IOUSBFAMILY workaround from the Dev-Team blog. I was just wondering what firmware I'm supposed to select in Simple Mode of Pwnage Tool. I have 2.1, 2.2., and 2.2.1. Thanks!

Ever since I unlocked my 3G iPhone using Cydia and yellowsn0w, every so often, all apps downloaded from the Apple store quit working. I have to delete them, then reinstall--then a few weeks later, the same problem. But the bootleg ones never fail.

Any ideas?
Thanks

iPhone firmware 2.2 : what are my options for unlocking?

I have 3G iPhone. I closed my contract with AT&T 4 months back. It has 2.2 version firmware. I really would like to "unlock" so that I can use any SIM card if I travel international for GSM network.

I tried PwnageTool yesterday but not successful. It says "not able to get to DFW mode". I have following questions?

1. Can we unlock 2.2 firmware iPhone 3G phones?
2. If I have to only unlock SIM, what should I use? Is it PwnageTool or QuickPwn?
3. When I trying PwnageTool, while I was asked to power on or hold home button on iPhone, I see that iTunes is getting connected to iPhone while I am using PwnageTool. Will that create a problem and is that why I see that error?

I really appreciate if you can give some suggestions.. All I would like to do is to unlock the phone. I thought it is easy but some how i am not successful.

Thanks.

I just tried using PwnageTool to jailbreak my iPhone 3G (firmware 2.2) and it failed. I have placed the log below. How can I get the program to work successfully? It says there is no free space on the root partition. Why is that?

When using Pwnage Tool, did you use Expert Mode and change the size of your Root Partition to greater than 500MB? If not, try that. I would recommend 700MB or so. :)

Thanks.
I think you mean DFU mode. First thing to check is do you have 10.5.6 installed on your Mac? If so, that's your issue. You'll need a powered USB hub or search the forums/internet for tips on editing the USB kext's (kernel extensions).

1. Yes, if you check the above and if you download the 2.2 firmware and have not ever upgraded to 2.2.1. One way to check to make sure your firmware is ok, got o Settings-->General-->About, scroll to bottom of firmware. If it's 2.28 or less, you are fine. 2.30 and you can't unlock.
2. Pwnage Tool to jailbreak, then download yellosn0w to unlock.
3. Not sure what you are asking here but if it won't put the phone in DFU mode, see my comments above. :)

Hi , no you can not unlock 2.2.1 firmware with the new baseband with the software but you can unlock it with a sim card. I have a Magicsim unlock sim and it works nice for me. I have get it from here: http://www.magicsim.com/en/unlock_device_show.asp?id=43&cp_id=&sort2name=15

Good luck with the unlocking!

I just jailbroke my 3G this weekend and then heard about the coming 3.0 update today. When 3.0 hits do I need to un-jailbrake the update then re-jailbrake?

Yes, but I would wait even when 3.0 comes out as all the proper tools will need to be updated. :)

Are the rumors correct that you cannot JB an already JB 2.2 3G to upgrade it to 2.2.1? If not, can anyone tell me how to do that?

.....sorry for the noobish question

Is there any way to unlock/jailbreak a 2G or 3G iPhone running the most current apple software and NOT install cydia or installer? I like the software the way it is, just want my iPhones to be unlocked so I can buy local SIM cards when traveling overseas.

Jailbreak on Mac

Hi guys,

I had previously jailbroken my iPhone 3G to 2.2.1 (5H11) on a Windows PC. But recently, I've switched to Mac as I've just gotten the MacBook Unibody.

I'd like to affirm if I've decided to format my iPhone 3G using the MacBook Unibody and do a clean Jailbreak once again, how should I go about doing so?

Is iClarified's tutorial(link) sufficient? Or are there some other precautions/steps which I have to keep a lookout for?

Please advice, thanks! :)

Do you need installer and Cydia? I installed both but don't find myself ever needing anything from installer but I thought they worked in conjunction so they both needed to be there?

Does anyone know where I can get the bootloader to unlock the 3G iPhone?
