I wonder what apple's % market share will be by the end of '05? High single or double digits ?

I seriously doubt it - more like 3-5%. I saw an analysts report that said for every 1 Billion in mac sales, Apple moves up 1 percentage point in market share. To go to double digit share would need tremendous growth.

that sure makes tons of sence... with the worlds population at 6 billion, that would mean if apple sold 6 billion computers they would only have a market share of 3+6%=9%... [in reality making a market dominating share of 100%] plus there is the fact that there are more people on this planet who don't have a computer then there are who do.

Well, that only works if PC sales slow down or remain static or grow at a slower rate. Apple can sell $1bn of Macs and still lose marketshare if none of these factors occurs. I hope they don't but it's certainly possible.

Probably not a 'Billion" but most likely a million. (I assume you are referring to units sold vs. dollars.) Regardless, I think the more important number is Apple sales vs some other specific manufacturer like Dell or Sony, etc. That's where Apple really shines.

Bought my first Mac, a mini, last weekend. No iPod yet. But very soon :D
How will Apple know we are former PC users? Does Apple have some type of survey?

Submit a "Switch" story via the Apple website. That'll let them know.

Um...

I think it's billions of dollars in macs, not billions of macs. Unless macs are now a dollar? Wait, did I miss that post?

While we're on the topic, why are people upset about Apple increasing market share? Because they feel a need to be in the minority? Because they think they're better than PC users? It's that kind of attitude that makes people think Mac users are zealous nutcases.

Every Mac user in history who ever said a cheap Mac would be bad for Apple I want you all to line up and bend over.

That is great.
It makes me wonder how well the Mac Mini is selling....

Hopely all of these iPods will translate into more Mac sells.

Have you seen all the car mod'ers tricking out their rides with Mac mini's lately? I've seen several articles about this. Think about that-- not only has the Mini been successful in breaking out of the desktop space, but it's into a very cool niche for the likes of MTV's "Pimp My Ride."

Sweet.

1 Billion sale mac sales means $1BN dollars US! Selling a 1 billion macs - not even sure the RDF of Steveo could pull that off!

Dollars not units is what I meant

You know too, that all these people who buy a Mac, 99% of them are going to remain steadfast Mac users.
That's not to say they can't or won't buy secondary PCs and what not, but you very very rarely meet someone who doesn't fall in love with OSX after using it for awhile.

I just registered to reply to this, being i always read but never post.

Yes, mac mini's are taking to the car environment because of their size, and the Dock in OSX is perfect for a touchscreen. There's still complications with GPS, software, power, etc.

but if you go to a website like mp3car.com and compare them to the likes of "pimp my ride," a verbal thrashing will be given (im an mp3car member as well as a planned mac-mini installer ever since i gutted my VIA-based system)

What do the posters on mp3car.com have against the Mac mini? On what grounds, other than the complications you mention, will you be 'thrashed?'

So true. It also means that their next computer will be a more expensive Mac. And as we all know, once you go Mac you tell everyone and their Grandmother about it! :p I think the snowball is rolling and will soon become an avalanche.

iPod, Mac Mini, Tiger, and dual-core dual-proc PowerMacs (*crosses fingers* lol) this is going to be a big financial year for Apple.

anyway see ipod sales slowing down anytime soon? it seems like we will get to a point where most people that are going to by them will have them... then what?

Well, they could be like me and break their iPod 18 months after buying it(I'm not sure what happened to it, but it won't boot anymore. If someone is interested in buying a 3g broken 15 gig iPod, PM me) and then break down and buy an iPod photo. Yeah I know, I'm a sucker for Apple :p

I see that all the time in Apple's iMac discussions. Someone will post that they just got their iMac and how great it is. Then all of a sudden they are talking about OSX as much as they're gushing about their new Mac.

Got to love that.

Woohoo! All this extra income should give Apple plenty to work with on product development. Maybe we'll see some great improvements in the new apps and hardware, as well as old rumored components not yet seen. :D

Growth outside the US market is a HUGE opportunity for Apple. Just look at their Apple stores - a couple outside of the US.

Germany has over 80 million rich consumers, Japan 100 million, UK 60 million, etc, etc.

And there are 60 million digital cameras sold each year - many of these for people who travel without laptops and aren't sure where to store images.

Plus wear and tear - the "projected life" of an iPod might be 5 years, so then one gets into replacing all those that have already sold.

All in all, the "mature" market size for iPods could easily be several hundred million units a year.
