Tim Crook, the CEO of one the most profitable companies, doing his thing to low ball or get a free hand out from his suppliers. A company that sues others a billion dollars for petty rectangle with rounded corners but unwilling to pay Qualcomm for the engineering that goes into building the best radio technologies.

Apple's "petty" rectangle with rounded corners changed the face of cell phones, computing and how people communicate, not to mention, it upended the largest communication companies in the world. Just because the sum couldn't be protected under outdated patent laws doesn't make it any less innovative than incremental improvements to radio technology. Oftentimes simple common sense trumps the legal system.

It says Qualcomm is laying off 15% of it workforce. The main reason cited is that Samsung dropped them as a supplier.

Don't know what article you're reading to each other but first paragraph states.

Qualcomm slashed 1,314 full-time jobs in San Diego and hundreds of jobs elsewhere as it revamps its business in the face of slower growth in the maturing smartphone market.

Samsung had its own GSM radio but still licensed Qualcomm CDMA radio. Difference is Apple wants a free handout so more Qualcomm job losses while Tim Crook enriches himself with excessive compensation greed that Steve Jobs warned about.

Has a defendant ever said "oops, yeah, you're right. We totally did that. Sorry!"
Probably yes, if the defendant knew they are wrong, and knew that it was inevitable that this would come out in a court case, and inevitable that a court would decide against them.

Guess which company isn't going to have their chips in the iPhone 8 this year...

"Can you hear me now?"

Yet, multiple independent watchdog agencies have investigated Qualcomm and decided they have engaged in the very practices that Apple is alleging. Apple wisely waited until those investigations were completed so you're trolling of Apple and Tim Cook is sillier than normal. It's probably better to make stuff up when independent evidence isn't available.

If Apple pays five times more to a dozen of other patent licensors, who are they, what does Apple pay them, and are they equally important?

Good point and nope, they're not all equally important.

For instance, Qualcomm basically funded and invented 3G themselves. (Everyone, GSM included, uses CDMA type radios for 3G.) That's why they get a large fee.

Qualcomm took those license fees for 3G, and invested hugely to help to create 4G.

Industry observers have noted that without Qualcomm, we wouldn't be using 4G right now.

Apple's statement was calculated to rile up people and courts who know nothing about cellular patents and the players who created them.

So Apple are suing a supplier for charging more than others as thats bad and shouldn't happen, but separately can defend their tax arrangement in Ireland where they get a preferential rate over other companies as perfectly normal, above board and the EU involvement is political meddling. Double standard or have I missed something?

Great job Apple screwing over yet another US supplier with your quest for greed and selling out to foreign countries! I'm sure Tim Crook sleeps well at night with his $135 million compensation while screwing over laid off Qualcomm employees dependent on their stock and small investors.

"...which argued that Qualcomm used its position as the sole supplier of a key iPhone component to drive up patent licensing fees"

"I will sue Apple now because: "...I argue that Apple used its position as the sole supplier of the iPhone to drive up the price"

Shut the F... up Apple... You set the price for the iPhone, and I can chose NOT to buy it, if I feel the price is to high... Qualcomm owns the patent and sets the price, and You can chose NOT to use the license, if You feel the price is to high...
