I hope this is not a repeat of the Newton. I hope Apple and AT&T did their
P's & Qs, Remember the whole Newton fiasco since I was an owner of the first Newton .... waited on line at macworld for one. I loved it but ... it really was pretty bad in its first gen. But I have faith Steve Jobs... probably would not be using it for his personal phone if it did not work 100%.

Well just like the Newton I will be first on line for the iphone. Probably going to get it a few days early as well... :D

i wish this dumb phone would come out asap. i'm sick of seeing these stories.

i come on, get all excited about a new rumor, then, BAM !!!, more iphone junk.

so your not interested at all in these stories yet find the time to comment on them.....first?

dont read them if you are not interested ;)

I'm willing to bet Apple releases a 3G phone in Europe later this yr and then in the US in Jan. at MacWorld.

The next phone I buy will be a 3G phone. If the iPhone doesn't have it I won't consider it. I need super fast data speeds. Why would it boost the iPhone? Not having 3G where competitors do is not a good thing for such an expensive phone.

This has nothing to do with 3G

Most Verizon and Sprint PCS phones are "CDMA", these days they're CDMA2000 rather than IS-95 because the latter is a relatively simple upgrade to IS-95, but they're all using the technology developed by Qualcomm and the vast majority of phones on those networks, 2G and 3G, are using Qualcomm chips.

Just a correction, because some people seem to be seeing this as "Ban on 3G phones, iPhone benefits" whereas it's more a "Ban on lots of phones, including many advanced ones, iPhone benefits" situation.

A quick look on T-Mobile's website (T-Mobile has not yet rolled out and made available its 3G network) shows just as many, if not more, advanced feature-full phones as Verizon or Sprint. Those thinking the iPhone is only up against "3G" are missing the mark.

Couldn't help notice that the two most affected carriers are the ones using CDMA. So am I to assume, then, that the GSMers primarily use Broadcom?

Qualcomm invented and developed CDMA technology with Verizon in the early nineties. Back then Verizon Wireless was Bell Atlantic Mobile.

speaking of phones....

I found this on LG's website. I guess they thought stealing AppleTv's splash screen would make their phone look better.

delaying Sprint and Verizon (CDMA) is bad for Apple

I suppose if you are accustomed to poor call quality then this ruling is fine but as a current CDMA user (Verizon, Sprint) it's annoying.

I'd have an iPhone if it were on Sprint (Verizon horribly cripples the features of all phones they sell) but not until then. I suffered as a Cingular customer for 2 years and switched to Sprint last November when my contract ended. I am a consultant and travel a lot. The combination of an uncrippled firmware in the Sprint phone (I can upload my own ringtones, thank you) and CDMA (sounds just like a wired phone) is the best.

GSM is good quality but it is obvious to the other party that you are on a cellphone. CDMA makes it very difficult to tell unless you're in an area with low signal. I rely on my phone to be successful in my job so the "warbly" sound of GSM doesn't cut it. Worst of all, Cingular cell areas don't do handoffs to AT&T cell areas so it was common to drop a call and go back to 5 bars when the phone re-established itself on the other network.

on the other hand, by the time Sprint is able to sell the iPhone the bugs will hopefully be worked out of the initial rollout.

The European version later this year will have 3G for sure. Actually, I can imagine that Apple just updates the US iPhone too. They want to break into the japanese market in early 2008 which cries for a serious update. Japan is around 5 years ahead of everyone in cell phones. It's gonna be hard for the iPhone to establish itself out there. I just hope Apple doesn't make it a flip phone just for japan :)

This is so 1997

This reminds me of the 1997 paradigm, "For Apple to Win, Microsoft has to Lose" state of mind of pre Jobs 2nd coming apple executives.

Just remove Microsoft from that equation an add your favorite company (Motorola, Nokia, Qualcomm, etc...)

I'm not happy that the iPhone will benefit from the force of the government. I'd rather the iPhone won in a perfectly competitive market, fair and square.

Mom's and connoissours

I did read that book. What I got out of it was this: they will not be pushing Cingular's $15/mo. "additional" data plan, which includes ring tones, video, and IMing. They will be, probably offering their regular $20 data plan that includes internet (all you can eat), and $5 (all you can eat), along with their voice plans (roll over minutes). Actually I think this is great.

Also I think you are not in the market for the iphone. Just like the mac was all about input (ans shipped with no software except macpaint, and eventually that was taken out due to anti-trust concerns), the iphone is all about input. My mom cannot figure out how to set up her speed dial on her very nice looking verizon branded motorola phone. So I helped her. And I couldn't either. I can set up the speed dial on mine, but I can't figur out how to easily send a text message...or to set it up to let me know when I have a new one.

If the iphone does just these things, and syncs to my mac, it will get out of my way, and I will pay $1000 for it.

And pay $500 more for one of my own, as that first one was for my mom.

If this thing can make a call, not drop it, an sync my address book and photos, that's all I want. With an interface that makes sense and doesn't pretend to have windows and scroll bars and "menus" and all that bs.

Sorry for MY rant, but I've been reading your kind of post too often. Its good to hear all sides, so good on you, but this is mine.

stop it. Did you read the book that employees of the only cell co. to agree to Apple's terms are being provided with? the content of the manuals is not very favorable to this very over-hyped electronics device. don't get me wrong, i am a huge apple/mac fan. i bought a powerbook g4 while in college (with my own $$ =) and than a Mac Pro when my designing career became lucrative. I love the apple state of mind and the products that cupertino produce. But! =)

i'm starting to think that Apple is betting too much on the input nature of this device and not the innovation of the feature set. According to the manuals thus provided (yes more things are due at launch which is BS because for $600 i shouldn't be lead by a leash) there is not much more that the iphone does better. in fact, it appears at first glance (yes more to come i know and also please stop defending the features just b/c they are apple) that this thing is rather bland if not blah! the truth is if this provides less essential features than the rest, i must say pass. and if Apple releases the iphone with a much more exciting feature set (that is useful and news worthy) than i will say bravo. but also in my mind will think FU. ok new product releases, cool surprise me. but at 3 weeks and counting, for a product announced months and months ago, i should have every reason to buy this thing in the bag. Sorry for the rants but i was so pumped to buy this thing that these latest spec reports are causing massiv doubt.

ring ring

...maybe I was the only person not to know  , but i must say that i was surprised to find out that typing "phone" on google gives "Apple iPhone" as first result! :p
Maybe this means we are not the only ones that keep talking about it! :D

Hey, I don't know where you get your smoke but I want some. I want to be so delusional to believe what you are telling me so I can avoid buying this thing. If it is as smooth and beautiful as the commercials indicate, I and many could care less about the belief you cite about "less features than the rest."

The rest of what? What phone has this level of easy operation, sophistication and integration seamless and superbly in this size? Gimme a break.

Hey I haven't smoked in years, but your planet may be the safest place to be when this thing comes out. The only thing I can criticize right now is the size. I would like more of it to hold music. And I say this as a non-Ipod person. That's right I'm an audiophile who resisted having music with me everywhere I go. But this phone is the bomb.

It's going to hurt not getting it soon. I'm waiting to hear the first rumor about a 16 gig device just in the hopes of holding out. And I fear I won't be able to do it. Either way I'll live. :p

You remind me of the guy who I met years back who worked in a big NYC bike shop and told me he didn't think much of Lance. He was a rated US cyclist and he just slammed the guy. In fact maybe you are that guy. :D

That touchscreen is just so "blah."

At least you have a definitive reason for holding out. But I wonder if there is any possible upgradeability via firmware for 3G at a later point. Is that even remotely possible?

But since 3G is on hold maybe there is no clearcut answer.

waaa whaaa whaaa iphone sux...whaaa whaaa whaaa no 3G...etc etc

iphone coould have HALF the features at TWICE the price, if it works as easily as it does in the commercials, it would still be a runaway success.

Apple has never been about "new" features, its about implementing ideas that have been out there in ways that are actually useable and useful.

Im glad some people dont want it, better chance Ill get one at launch.

MR Crowd: OMG iPHONE Sux, no 3G and I cant do x, y, or z.
General public: Did you see that? I can put MY music on it AND its a phone!

Regardless of this news, lack of 3G in the iPhone is pretty weak. Maybe people will let that pass in the US but in Asia and Europe where 3G is the norm for mid to high end phones (and HSDPA, 3.5G is the norm for a high end phone), the market is likely to be less forgiving.

Having said that, only time will tell.

Indeed. 3G could have been forgiven if the device at least had a legitimate GPS offering. Unless iphone users end up paying AT&T 50% less a month than I am for my Treo 750, they are getting RDFed to support Apple's real R&D problem associated with the next Rev.
