Better for Apple to wait til 2020. We don't want a repeat of the 4G rollout.
What repeat of the 4G rollout?
Just like I have now, the ‘enable 4G’ button works fine, I can use it when I like and the same going forward would be fab.
Apple are waiting for the price to be right, (that’s the price they pay and not the price you pay). They don’t care about you.

Are you serious when blaming about a probable lack of 5G on next-gen iPhones? Which are your data limits?

The problem is, Intel's 5G modem in 2020 will likely perform similar to Qualcomm's 2019 modem.

Well the Intel 5G Modem, XMM 8160 is actually the first Full Multi Modem 5G Modem. ( First Announced Anyway ). The Qualcomm 2019 5G Solution will be any Snapdragon, which provides the 4G LTE modem, and additional silicon, X50 Modem combined to work. i.e It will need more Internal Space.

The optimistic side of me, is that Intel 5G Modem is built on Intel 10nm, and this 10nm has been designed from ground up for cellular and analog usage. Intel had also been working along with Ericsson and Nokia and 5G development, giving them more more time to test the 5G standard.

The realistic side of me is that the 10nm Custom Foundry might have not be the same as it was one targeted, same as the 10nm used for its CPU which is rumoured to be getting redesign. Their XMM 7560 and 7660 is nearly two generation behind Qualcomm in certain areas.

5G is an absolute 'mine's bigger than yours' argument. If we leave the 5G network build-out aside, people should ask themselves a simple question before pushing forward on the cutting edge: "What providers will provide the backhaul capability needed to support 5G?" I will be happy to wait a little longer. It's not like speed is killing me.

Chicken and egg. Someone has to do it for progression to happen.
Somewhere on Networkrumors.com, oz_tracker has just posted, “What handset makers will provide the necessary hardware needed to support 5G?”

Depends on where you live. According to Deloitte, China already has 350,000 5G cell sites.
You're right. I'm specifically talking about the US.

Ummm, I know someone who's working on the rollout for two major US carriers, tons of projects nationwide... 5G standard is finalized and definitely 'fleshed out'

It's ok for Apple to be late as usual, but lets not pretend that they want that, if it's up to them, they'd be all over it
You've completely misread my comment. Fleshed out as in rolled out with nationwide coverage. It ain't done yet.
Whether Apple is late or not has nothing to do with my comment. I was referencing the tolerance members have for being guinea pigs since a lot of people on this site run beta software.

And Apple, as usual, will have it roughly three years later when they figure out how they can extort more money from customers

My SE is 2.5 years old. By the time I get a new phone in a couple of years or so, iPhones will have 5g and coverage in my area will be stable. Perfect.

We had a ton of responses like that about 4G back in 2010 and 2011: "3G is good enough for a phone, no need for anything faster"

And if 4g still isn't supported everywhere after all that time, how long before 5g is even supported? Not everyone loves in New York or LA...

Oh no! What am I ever going to do with a garbage phone that *only* has a 1Gbps connection when it could have 1.2Gbps? Facebook will load 0.03s slower now. Useless!

I think 5G is far more interesting as a replacement for home broadband fiber and cable lines. Can’t think of any reason I would need 5G on my next phone anytime in the next several years. If you really want to increase your internet speed, install a content blocker. When the page loads or the video plays before you even lift your finger you know you don’t need faster mobile internet. This is just another pointless spec that will encourage corporations to inject even more obnoxious ads and auto playing videos into pages and apps and finally give Android device manufacturers something to differentiate themselves from the iPhone again. And it will fool a lot of people who don’t even need half the speed of LTE.

I will be excited to get it on my next Android but my Xr will still have my main sim. It's actually not bad as a phone. It's my first iPhone in years that I can say that about. There was always mic problems or modem problems or something that made my dad always ask me to call him back "on a real phone" which would mean a Samsung or HTC-made phone. Until now. My Xr passed my "Grumpy Old Dad Test."

But there was a difference... going from 3G to 4G was going from "barely usable" to "very usable"

It's good now. With 4G... I can already pull 70Mbps in the parking lot at the grocery store. I have no complaints like I did with 3G phones.

Of course there's more to 5G than just raw speed... like latency, connections per tower, etc.

But people's biggest complaint - speed - has already been solved with 4G.

5G will be a benefit for the carriers from an infrastructure standpoint... getting more customers per site or efficiency or whatever. And they'll probably use 5G as an opportunity to increase your monthly bill. Good for them.

But the average user? I don't think they will be amazed by 5G like they were with 4G.

My 2 cents.

And 5G will have spotty coverage even in big cities until 2020 at the earliest. So who cares?

Well i enjoy seeing 4G everywhere I travel, and having an iOS device that only actually sends and receives data when on LTE. Sure is great when you need a map. Or anything at all. Can’t wait for 5G,I’m sure that will help.

There is a difference though. Now a days, with 4G LTE, web pages load instantly, Facetime/Skype calls are smooth, and Netflix streams in HD without a hiccup.

Realistically, in everyday usage, I cannot think of any case scenario where I will need any significantly higher speed off my phone.

Im not hyped over 5G at all.

5G - web pages load instantly-er

:p

Who cares lol. This sucked with EDGE vs 3G, but... data speeds aren't terrible now. I can wait the extra year.
