I sold it on ebay for $200 which came to about $180 after ebay and paypal rape you. You're definitely not going to get more than what it's worth. Nobody is going to pay you the full value plus tax when they can get a brand new one for less.

Better hurry up and sell it soon too.

Wow, people mention how bad and immoral it is to try and return a untouched, unopened iPod to a store that will end up selling it to someone else to recoup their full value back on it, but its ok for you to mention all this in such a nasty and arrogant manner. If you want to talk morals act with some kind of morals.

I asked a simple question, and i thank those who replied, but I really didn't expect the moral police to get so passionate about this.

Let me explain something to you guys who are against doing what i mentioned. When you sold you iPod on ebay or craigslist your hurting apple much more then i am. You see that person who bought that discounted product from you wont go to apple and buy that product now. If you didn't resell these items on ebay or craigslist, apple's sales would probably be a little bit more because they would have to go straight to apple to buy that product at full fair value.

Did you guys ever think of that???? How do you justify that??

So for those who are so vehemently against what im doing but mention its ok to flip the phone for $150-200 on ebay are basically hypocrites and should realize that those are potential sales for apple, which should have went to them and paid the full retail price ,are now lost.

Those who flip apple products on ebay/craigslist are indirectly affecting apples sales, and I am sure apple would absolutely love for that practice to end.

What people fail to realize is when i buy the iPod and then i get my rebate its a wash. I now own this product and can do what i want with it. So if i return it for $250 counting tax back to apple or whomever, and then they restock it on the shelf cause its unopened and still in perfect condition and sold for $250 its a wash again. No harm.

Apple should NOT Take back your return. IF they do, I want to sell my Apple stock! I would hope and imagine that they would scan the serial number in and say, sorry, this was part of a rebate. I would be so thankful they gave you an opportunity to get a free, FREE iTouch! If you don't need it, you will sell it right away on Ebay. So, look at your fortune and not try to take advantage of the system. It's things just like this that has brought the US to the condition it is. If you try to return something in most other countries, it has to be damaged before they would take it back and it's only exchange. When you buy it, it yours! I think we should adopt that here in the U.S. Too many people doing what you suggest, and we all wind up paying for it.

Wait till you finish school and start working in the real world.

To the guy who mentioned school and real world, I am going on my second degree and i have lived in the real world for a little bit now.

As to what brought the U.S to this condition, that was the mortgage industry not returning iPods.

Also like what was stated above YOU are actually hurting the economy by flipping someone else's product at a discount (In this case Apple). Also factor in that the buyer didn't pay the tax on that item and thats a whole other argument.

your thinking is delusional. First off selling a item in an open trade forum is not hurting anyones sales. most people in the market for a "used item" on ebay or CL have no intention of going to the retail store and paying full price. that is why they try the used market. If they don't find one for the price they want, they wait until they do. i have never looked for a used car and because i did not find what i was looking for right away, decided to buy a brand new.

second, what you are saying boils down to theft. it cost apple say $100 to make that device. they give it to you as a promotion. THEY ARE OUT $100 the cost of mfg. $100 they can write off as business expenses.

if u then return it they give you $229+ tax back they are now not only out $100 but they are in the red $29+ tax. meaning they gave away $29 actual dollars they did not have. now imagine if a 1000 people do this. that's $29,000 in the red. even worse with another retailer because they never intended to give you anything, therefore it is a bigger hit to their bottom line.

when you get a B-day with $20 do you give it back ask for $100?

stuff like this is why this world is so awful. not this specific act. but the spirit of constantly wanting to cheat others and scam people out of money.

P.S. if you dont like the "Moral Police" getting after you, then don't post in an open forum asking people to help you figure out how to defraud others or if it can even be done.

Really doesn't matter how you try to justify it, what your attempting to do is shady as hell...if you didnt need an iPod Touch, upon purchase of your mac you had two options...1) Don't buy the IPod, 2) Buy The iPod, sell the ipod, receive the rebate. Buying the iPod, returning the iPod, and getting the rebate isn't how it works, and if you had any question about that you could've easily called Apple, chances are you didn't because you know its full well wrong.

1 more thing about your logic. lost sales and giving away money is two different things.

say you are right and a ebayed ipod causes apple to lose a sale.

that is money they never had. it is immeasurable for them to track a lost sale.

but, your plan would actually take EXISTING money from them, as i explained above.

2 completely different things.

mikeyiphone: just sell it on ebay/craigslist. you are not going to get full retail value for it. why would you try to make it more difficult than it should. there are many ipod touch 8gig online for way less than retail value from apple.

you are already recieving full retail price from rebate, if you dont need the ipod, just give it to your parents/gf/siblings/friends/someone's bday.

you cant return any apple product to an apple store without a receipt. they need proof that the item was purchased from an apple store otherwise they'll be taking back any unopened apple products from other stores which wouldnt benefit them.

OP, Don't bother asking the forums here when you're so sure you're doing the better thing. Why don't you just try your story and reasoning at the apple store? If they agree and take it back, then you must be right! You've already got the consensus of the forums, so there's no point in further trying to justify your point here.

PS - if you're gonna try something shady, it's best not to share it with the whole world
