My 3GS running 4.0 has adjustable fonts. It's a feature of the software not the new phone
I guess this is another feature left out on the 3G then cause i did the download for my 3G and can't seem to find that function.
Not really the screen I have problems with now that im getting older ( 48 ) its this damn ear hair that is keeping from hearing anything out of the ear piece 
I don't know if this is from iOS4 or the iphone4 or it's always been there and I didn't know, but it rocks. Go to settings - general - accessiblity. You can increase the font size, and the zoom feature, I think, is great.
