And the huge cost of the additional storage is something you can almost count on not getting back because the price of SSD storage should drop dramatically in the next year.

Agreed this is one of the reasons why i opted for the 256, however for some the onboard strorage is justifiable. In general I have always bought high end and upgraded 4 years or so, now with the Retina and Intel`s advancements this no longer holds true as base and high end performance has never been closer and SSD`s will drop in price across the board as they gain traction in the mainstream.

For those that can moniterize the difference, for those that just want the largest numbers the high end BTO`s make sense...

This thread is about people who sell their RMBPs every year; the fact that some people may need more than 256GB and hold onto it for several years is irrelevant, as the cost per year will be less after a couple years.

Interesting read. Do you folks believe that the 512/8/2.6 model will be worth more or less than the 256/16/2.3 model in a year?

Btw I disagree with the person saying Airs will have higher resale value. They'll likely get retina in the next iteration (possibly as soon as October) and even the ultimate ones from last year are worth nothing this year. I just sold one in mint condition at a 40% loss!

I think you would take a lower hit if you were to go with the base with 16Gb than the upgraded model with only 8GB ram. 256Gb for many is more than enough storage and many buyers will not pay a premium for the extra space. The ram on the other hand is soldered and you would likely be able to get 50% back of the $200 you spend on the ram upgrade.

Also not sure if you were mentioning my MBA air post. I meant to say that you are likely to get more back from your MBA purchase percentage wise than your rMBP. Generally higher luxury items such as this notebook at the moment will lose their value faster than a base 13" MBA that likely won't change much next year when and will be demanded by consumers on eBay. And I highly doubt Airs will ever get retina, considering the battery and cooling issues that would be involved.

I perceive you will get more for the 2.6, 8, 512 than the 2.3, 16, 256, however you will loose a greater percentage on the 2.6.

Used market for the Air has already softened, many used machines for sale, potential upgrade to Retina, once again think carefully that MacBooK Air "Ultimate" may look good on your signature, however the losses will be high, once again base model/256 will offer the best return easiest sell. The high end BTO`s will be lucky to see 10% return on the extra goodies...

The Retina`s will hold value, latest & greatest many will baulk at having to pay over $2K for the base or frankly out of their means, so the used market will be buoyant. Apple wont drop the price so soon, more likely to increase specification for 2013, just look at the trend for the Unibody from 08 onwards.
