Names Can Never Hurt Me

A quick search on-line dictionaries turned up various definitions and some dictionaries do not even include the word phablet yet. So should I be concerned if someone calls my phone a phablet?

I personally don't like the term, and it seems to have always been a term of derision, especially by some Apple fans when the original note came out. My + isn't anything like my iPad, it doesn't compare at all really, but I love the larger full HD screen. I'd say it is a large phone, and if someone likes the term phablet they are more than welcome to use it, but it isn't anything like a 6" phone like the Galaxy Mega or the new nexus, those are definitely closer to being a so called "phablet".

The iPhone 6 is one of the smaller smartphones. It can't really be used in landscape mode so it's not a phablet. Now the 6+, that's another story.

The Note 1 popularized the term Phablet. It was 5.3''. 6+ is bigger. It is a phablet.

But the market has shifted, so the original note screen is about average in today's market. How can an average phone be considered a "phablet"? It's just a question of definition. If the definition of a phablet is any phone 5" or more, then ok, but that makes it a pointless term.

Perhaps they do converge and it becomes a pointless term very soon. But for 2014.... Lumia 1520, 6+, Z Ultra, G3, Note 4 and Nexus 6 are all still popularly termed as phablets by the industry. Samsung showed there was interest, and manufacturers are all selling their flavor now. Or perhaps it is just a phablet fad and people will want smaller phones again. Time will tell.

Not sure what merits a phablet, but I basically never do things I do on my iPad on my 6+. The Mini is for my readings and media if need be, else everything happens on my phone.

So... I guess it's really up to how you define your usage! I definitely can imagine people trying to read long articles on the 6+, even if it's not as comfortable as doing so on a tablet. Cheers.

Phablet is such a subjective term.

To someone who's 4"10 with tiny hands an Iphone 6 is a "phablet" to someone who's 6"10 with HUGE hands a 6+ feels like a regular phone.

the most objective perspective we can have on this is to say ANY Iphone/multi touch smartphone is a phablet.

Flip phone = Phone

Ipad = Tablet

Any multi touch smart phone = Phablet (since functionally it's both)

that's much more of a definitive perspective than people arguing all day long over fractions of an inch. Especially when everyone's hands are different sizes.

I would say Apple itself considers the 6+ a phablet and the 6 a phone just based on the fact that only the 6+ between the two of them has the split screen iPad landscape interface in many of its apps like the Settings app for example.

Apple has de-popularized the term phablet.

I have not seen Apple use the term phablet

Dear all,

We all know the 6+ is a phablet.

But is the iPhone 6 technically a phablet as well? It is definitely not 100% functional with one-handed usage, and so could be deemed as such.

Thoughts?

Ummm...

Have to agree with the other guy here. The word phablet is somewhat subjective.

Is the Note 4 a phablet?

What do you mean? Search iPhone 6+ phablet. Even anandtech calls it a phablet in the title of the review.
I don't think I would ever naturally call a device a Phablet. Very few reviewers out there are referring to the iPhone 6+ as a Phablet. I am not doing anything more on the 6+ then I was doing on the 5s.but I'm just benefiting from a more enjoyable experience I'm still doing the same tasks.

Sure to each their own, call it whatever you want. But the industry sees it as a phablet. I struggle to find a review where they don't call it a phablet.

even when you going to a carrier store I don't see a section where it says Phablets.

I just bought few week ago. It's not comfortable to put in jean but it's good device, and it's not phablet. And if it's phablet apple will using other name. Like the way they using "fusion hard drive" for hybrid drive or rentina display.

This whole discussion is so silly to me. Just because Apple doesn't call it a phablet, doesn't mean it isn't so for an individual end user. "Phablet" is obviously a subjective term...if the iPhone 6+ or 6 replaces an iPad AND your phone for you, then it is a phablet. But if the iPhone 6+ or 6 just replaces your phone for you, then it is a phone.

For a friend of mine, the 6+ is a phone which she calls her phone and she still has her iPad mini for a tablet....for my mother, the 6+ replaced her iPad mini and her phone so for her the 6+ is a phone and tablet so she calls it her phablet.

This all should be a no brainer.

And as I said earlier, I think Apple probably considers the iPhone 6+ a "phablet" in their inner circle even though Apple doesnt call it a phablet. They know people will probably use it like a tablet as evidenced by the fact that they included the split screen iPad interface in many apps on the 6+ and not the 6.

Everything in the world is subjective. But that's not a useful way of looking at things though is it?

You could debate me to the death about whether the sky is in fact "blue" vs. "aquamarine" or "teal" or "cyan."

But the general consensus is still that the sky is indeed "blue." Just like the general consensus is that the iPhone 6+ is indeed a "phablet."
