NOOO, turn if off immediately, it's going to self destruct in 11 and a half seconds, possibly causing a chain reaction taking the whole planet with it ...

;)

Same noise all the Mac Pros make, once the chime sounds the Mac has control of the fans, before it's in a default mode :)

What i'd be more interested in is what sounds a lot like a relay cutting out shortly after shutdown, it could be HDD heads parking, but it's a good couple of seconds after the rest of the system has gone down

My fans also spin up during boot up, but I actually thought it was the GPU fan making the noise. You mentioned the Pro's at the store not making the noise, perhaps those have the ATI card and we all have the Nvidia? *shrugs*
Just throwing ideas out there :) Essentially though I believe it's normal just as the others have said. I haven't seen any problems thus far with it so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I'm curious about this as well. I remember when I had linux installed on my old PC it would make the same noise after shutdown. Thing that always made me wonder though, was why it never did it when I had windows installed. My impression was that it had something to do with the PSU.

Read somewhere, here or on another forum, that there is some third party firmware, that allows the superdrive to read certain disc's the drive would not normally do, but results in the drive running at fullspeed all the time?

May be useful to do a search for this and see if it sheds any light?

Edit: See Here for starters

Funny thing about that post, my Jan08 Pro came with the Pioneer 111D, not the Sony. Is my Mac the step child or are they sending them out with both?

Mine Jan08 came with the Pioneer as well. Assembled in Ireland.
Not important though. I´m adding new HDs as I write. This machine is awesome
