For me, yes. Its a must have.
First off my school (minneapolis college of art and design) requires all students to have an apple laptop. Yes I need it as Im majoring in graphic design, I couldnt do anything without it.

A good friend of mine passed college well without ever owning a laptop (he used the university computers). I suppose it's not a MUST have, if you have sufficient facilities in your college, though it's definitely a bonus, especially if you're going to want to type up notes or finish up an assignment past library closing times.
