That would be horrible. I've tried "touch-typing" on a touchscreen. Invariably my fingers start to stray the moment I take my eyes off the keys. Haptic wouldn't help that either. You need to be able to feel the edges of the keys and those dimples on two of them.
Agreed! We've all done it before with an iPad!

I wonder if they could pinpoint the sensory feedback to the part of the screen where the key was pressed.

As opposed to using simple keystroke commands to potentially do the same thing? Now we need to visualize everything first—seems like a step backwards, no? Talk about first world problems. o_O

I would love if this was standard. I often switch between Latin and Cyrillic keys and this would be awesome. I used to just use the annoying stickers, then started just etching the keys myself (just etch off some of the black plastic and the clear underlayer even works with the backlight), but this would also eliminate the need for separate foreign keyboard hardware (as long as they get used to the shape of the return key).

No. You need to read more about e-ink.

This would be amazing technology, but not necessarily for the average user.

However, I'm more inclined to think Apple will go with a glass touch screen, virtual keyboard, wi a Taptic Engine before they went this route, and that would definitely drain the battery much faster. But it would also offer an incredible multi-purpose interface for those who need it.
Please no. That'd result in a terrible typing experience.

Customizable keys have always seemed a cool idea, but in reality they're convoluted, gimmicky, over-fiddly, and over-priced for most users. Most users never mess with key mappings, custom key functions, or macros.

I just want an Apple wireless *extended* keyboard, please.

Yes, hanging on my cabled "extended" for dear life.

Everything wireless w. numeric section I tried is just not the same.

As for battery life, anybody who has to use AA or AAA batteries for electronics, check out eneloop rechargables.
Expensive at first, but after I bought these w charger, never looked back.
Just a fantastic product.

People actually look at their keyboards when they touch type?

No most of us tell Siri, so really no need for a keyboard.

In theory, this is an interesting and potentially productive concept. It's success will depend on getting the details right on things like lighting, material of keys, and implementation of software.

I could also see this being an optional keyboard for those using Mac Pros and higher end iMacs. But then again, when was the last time Apple cared about pro users.

Created by Australian startup Sonder and displayed at an event in Tsinghua University in Beijing, the keyboard uses an e-ink display behind the keys of the board to dynamically change the input of the device to the whim of the user, which could range from different languages to social network shortcuts and emojis.
This is currently the main focus in Cupertino, just because of that one feature.

"Right chaps, we've made progress on monetising headphones. What next? The trusty keyboard?"

Hopefully they redesign Magic Keyboard with the lightning port on the bottom, like Magic Mouse 2. Really just makes so much more sense. /s

This x1000! The biggest engineering snafu I have ever seen.

and turn it off when the cable is plugged in, just in case anyone drills a hole in their desk

This exists already ! It's been available from a russian company many years ago, and it was quite expensive, and the keys were actually in color !

Yep, black and white ePaper and OLED screens are the exact same thing. Definitely already exists.

On a related note, the iPhone 7 is a total ripoff of 2 tin cans and a string.

Finally! The key that's been missing from keyboards for decades!!!

Backlit... it would have an impact i'm sure compared to what we're used to especially with every key being its own display

E-ink doesn't need a backlight. And if they have one as an option it can be easily turned off for most environments

Finally. I have been hoping someone would really update a keyboard so that software could take advantage of it. I know there have been keyboards available, but with Apples size they can really push developers to take advantage of this. Imagine keyboards being customize for CAD, Photoshop, Final Cut, and GAMES!!! I really hope this is true.

Me too.

My last Mac, the late 2012 iMac, I bought the wired one just so I could have an extended keyboard. I am not sure why Apple did away with the normal sized wireless keyboard.

So Apple could use the MBP keyboard parts directly in the wireless keyboard - controller and all, which the current mini/MBP-keyboard controller doesn't support enough i/o lines to scan a full-size keyboard.

Basically too much effort and too small of a market for Apple to bother with anymore.
