iOS 17 will introduce a new iPhone experience for Apple Maps that integrates detailed turn-by-turn directions to the Lock Screen without taking over the display, claims a leaker with alleged insider information.

Concept render shared by Analyst941

Currently in iOS 16, when real-time Maps directions are active and the iPhone is locked, the Maps app takes over the screen and all other Lock Screen elements are hidden. According to Twitter account Analyst941, this will change in iOS 17, with Maps directions including live visual map data taking over a portion of the Lock Screen, but with app notifications and the Camera and Flashlight buttons remaining at the base of the display.

The leaker claims that app notifications will still be accessible by swiping up on the screen, while the physical act of unlocking the iPhone will remain a seamless transition. According to Analyst941, the new Maps Lock Screen interface will be coming to "all iPhones."

This is the first time we have heard about specific changes to Maps for iOS 17, and the leaker has made several other claims about iOS 17 that have yet to be corroborated. This rumor, and others like it, should therefore be taken with a grain of salt.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has expressed doubt about Analyst941's claims and believes that some of the information is inaccurate. We'll know more about their accuracy in just under a month when Apple unveils ‌iOS 17‌, watchOS 10, and other updates at the June 5 WWDC keynote.

instead of just the flashlight or camera icon, could be a menu action that shows you those widgets instead of having to swipe from the Maps screen.

there definitely needs to be an improvement to the Maps UI, the experiencing of trying to type and search with the text bar moving to the top and making it inconsistent is annoying.

I actually like the idea of the map showing on the lock screen rather than just the upcoming turns.

I'm of the mind that having so many steps on screen at one time (even if I so rarely use that display) is more distracting than the active map.

If those flashlight and camera icons were customizable shortcuts, that would really be something. I really hope they do improve the Maps lock screen experience because it's kind of annoying right now. I wish there were an option to disable screen locking while Maps is going. Unlocking is not as seamless and it could be when I have to angle my face a little into the camera while driving.

I like it but the Flashlight & Camera icon needs to be removed. Why would you want to see Notifications while driving and using Apple Maps? That's a distraction being set in place. Do not Disturb/Safety first!

It would be nice if we had the option to remove or replace those lockscreen button options. I can't tell you how often I accidentally turn on the flashlight. And it seems like it always happens at the most inconvenient times.

Can we get Music app integration like on Google Maps? I want to see the current song playing and be able to go to the next track without having to leave Maps. Google nailed it with this - such a simple and useful feature. Seems like a no-brainer.

Camera button is okay but the flashlight one is so annoying
I actually find the camera button more annoying because… There’s already plenty of ways to access it.
Swipe left… there’s the camera.
Click the button in the lock screen… There’s the camera.
Pretty sure it can be added to the control center as well, and the home screen… Literally way too many ways to access the camera.

But the screen never lock when you have navigation on. Unless you lock it yourself or not in navigation mode.

You can also set to display auto lock to never when using maps.

Isn’t this how Google Maps works on Android? I believe it does, at least, on the Pixels.

Why do I need the camera and flashlight buttons to be visible when I'm driving and getting directions? Furthermore, why do I need to see 2 time clocks displayed (upper left corner and center) while I'm driving and getting directions? And if we include the time clock in the car, that's 3.

Long over due. I hope they provide access to navigation programs as well. I think when Apple has to play by their own rules they put on others they make by far better products for everyone instead of the cheating to get access to more power and gimping 3rd party devs.

Funny how the feathers fly when they both keep trying to show off their peckers. It me I am right, no you are not, I am too and you know it. You know you're wrong. :D

And we want the time to be displayed twice because...I have two eyes(?)

Yeah, the camera and flashlight icons don't even work when I tap them...why are they there?

If you have a CarPlay, which is the way to travel, then this makes very little sense and is, actually, quite distracting.

If you drive with your iPhone mounted, then why would you need that massive time display, taking up some valuable maps space? The way it looks and works right now is fine, IMO.

Apple could just add the notifications bar at the bottom, but the huge time display, flashlight & camera make no sense.
