how nuts is this???

safari and itunes DON'T go together well!

itunes and the APP store app would go together well!!!

itunes and the iSYNC would go together well...!

if they want to merge something, then they should merge MAIL, iCAL and adress book!!!
Best suggestion in thread thus far!

Bad...very very bad idea. The kind of bad idea that should get the systems architect who suggested it fired. This is the kind of crap that Microsoft pulled and lead to 10 years of innovative stagnation in the web browser space.

Apple should be looking away from the Microsoft model of vendor lock in across product lines and looking towards a more open model for its content distribution systems.

Safari isn't a bad browser, its just that Firefox has so many more extensions that make me more productive and gives me a more consistent web experience when I have to switch between my work systems and my home systems.

Obviously Apple is putting everything in a web browser so they can make a contender to ChromeOS. Just boot Safari and you are done! :D

I really hope this isn't true, as then I will always have 2 browsers running if one is built into iTunes (Of course iTunes already has a browser built in for the iTunes store so maybe it won't be much of a change in terms of memory usage.)

Oh hell no. If anything, combine iTunes and the App store and re-name it. This would be a disastrous combination. Hopefully Steve will be alive and well to cut the cord on this one before it becomes a reality.

Maybe this rumor doesn't mean exactly what it sounds like, possibly a poor translation, or just completely bogus, but this is my take.

90% of the iTunes Store is browser based, so it wouldn't be completely too far out there to read this as, "Apple is going to make the iTunes store a webapp, and remove it from the iTunes app"

Well, as you explain, it kinda makes sense for Apple to make the iTunes Store fully available from Safari, and make iTunes a pure Media Player and Sync Application, by removing the AppStore part of it.

This would mean that the "iTunes Store" will become integrated into Safari, not that iTunes and Safari would merge into one application.

I tunes is an utter pile of S*** when it comes to performance...imagine being forced that bloated, convoluted junk for practically everything on your computer

I'm sick of seeing this picture in every other thread. It is becoming lame and entirely overused.

or merge iTunes, iCal, iPhoto, and the Address Book (all apps that sync with the iPhone), but even that would be a bad idea.

instead i would like to see an iPhone app that allows to send short messages, change settings etc, a remote control for my iPhone.

and (completely unrelated), it would be nice if this forum would display the LOCAL time, instead of some time that i don't understand, i can't find my previous posts !

this is a global site, people !

Both programs are already bloated and they want to merge them? Looks like I'm staying with Chrome.

Safari, bloated? Is there a version 6 out there that I am not aware of?

It happens that Chrome is actually much, much more bloated than Safari, as it does not use any native API that make Mac OS X so good and unique. It’s all custom-made code (Webkit, animations, PDF reader, ...). It shows it’s a weak port from Windows. Safari, on the other hand, relies on basic code directly provided by Mac OS X.

I didn't have time to read the thread, so sorry if it's already been said...

Ha!, I guess Real was ahead of their time, MP3 player, video player, and internet browser all in one..

Tell you what, SJ, clean up the bloat on iTunes, get an update to fix all the syncing problems that people are complaining about on your own support discussions boards, and then maybe we'll be excited.
Safari works well. iTunes, ah, not so much.

I think that this is really what Apple should do:

-Make a new app that manages iOS devices and also lets you shop for iOS apps.

-Make iTunes work exactly like iBooks does on iOS devices, it's a place for content and also a store for that content.

-The iOS management app would let you sync iTunes content just like it lets you sync iPhoto content. It would also have all of the iTunes stores available within it, but to play music it takes you to iTunes.

This way Apple still gets to put all the parts of the iTunes store in front of everyone with an iPod or iOS device, but the actual music player gets separated out. Maybe the music/video player part of iTunes could just become part of QuicktimeX, or the other way around, iTunes becomes Quicktime X with library management.

If they done it right it would make sense, and lets fact it, more people use itunes than any one web browser

Wrong. According to the latest internet statistics, there are almost 2 billion users worldwide. Let's assume that everyone who uses iTunes is doing so because they have an iPod/iPhone/iPad. Assuming that Apple has sold 320 million iPods (the latest data on iPod sales is almost a year old, from April 2010), 80 million iPhones (data from the end of fiscal year 2010), and 10 million iPads, we have a total of 410 million users of iTunes to sync (that's also assuming every single one of these products is still in use, and accounts for an individual user). Even if all of these are the case, Internet Explorer market share accounts for over 46% of the 2 billion internet users, which is over 900 million, so that immediately makes your claim invalid. Firefox, which has nearly 31% of the market, accounts for approximately 620 million users. As such, your claim is once again incorrect.

I don't think iWeb and iDVD are used anymore, they might throw those out next iLife version.

i still think that idvd is a very important program! yes, you might not use it every day, but WHEN you need it (for example after filming a wedding) it is good to have it!

same applies to iweb: i know some people who use it, some even learned to make a website for the first time. it would be stupid to scrap it from ilife, as it is a combination of everything necessary.

iTunes should be stripped, its very bloated already. Indeed move the iTunes (App/Music) Store to a web version (for Safari) or better yet move it into the new "App Store" application (which should be available for 10.4 and 10.5 too).

Another NO from me....besides everything else, this would be a bad idea from Apple's point of view too - imagine the brand confusion which would result of having other music stores (not to mention pirate sites) available from within iTunes?
