Question...

Do you think those with unlimited plans on
Verizon will find that company going after
them for illegal tethering?

got my second; second notice.

im rolling till the wheels fall off..

60GBs this month

I am right there with you, used miwy until I got the first notice then switched to tetherme, but recently received the second notice. Them taking me off unlimited is a non issue, it was good while it lasted.

I've used over 600GB of data through my iphone tethering since January 2011.

I've gotten both warnings...it seems att is taking away my unlimited data?

i think they have a speed cap in place if you go over a certain amount of GB's...

this month i've gotten 14GB and now my donwload speed is 100-80 kbs....

last week it was maxing out at 500 kbs........now i get rand burst like every 30 minutes of up to 300 kbs then it drops back to 100-80 kbs...

I've never had this problem when downloading 200 plus Gb's in one month.

I just moved to minot north dakota so it might be the towers fault, back home in lousisana i maxed at 300kbs average....minot was giving me 500kbs on 5 full bars last week when i got here.

how can you possibly be using that much data? now i know who to blame for slow internet speeds and faulty 3g connections b/c they're overloaded w/ data hogs :p

So what's the consensus...does the PDA Net stealth tethering option work?

Consensus? It either works or it doesn't.

No one knows if it works since no one knows what ATT is using to catch illegal tethering.

awh shush.

you have crappy towers in your area..... don't blame the users.

I only download heavy at night when the bandwith opens up because no one is really using their phones...

Gotta say, I admire your gusto.

I use tethering occasionally (mostly on vacation to use laptop) but have never gotten a notice, and I use about 3 GB of bandwidth a month and the most I've used is right around 5 (this includes normal 3G data use as well as tethering). I'm also on an account with 8 other iPhones, none of which use tethering (or nearly as much data as I do). I'm pretty sure I could do just about anything and ATT would look the other way, considering the monthly bill. It's a numbers game. But 60 GB? That's pretty awesome. *Tips hat*

What app u guys using?

To all the people using pdanet, what version are you using? 5.01 ( with option to choose hide level 1 or 2) or the new one 5.02 (with no option to choose level 1 or 2 hide, simply just hide option)?

Are you guys serious or just "trolling"

60gigs by tethering what the hell!

Why would you use your iPhone as your internet connection for your home?

If you are serious get a JOB and buy home service.

Always a few i guess who think they are "sticking it to the man" but are really just immature technerds who are to cheap to buy broadband service and try and play WoW over their tethered connection.

You are AWSOME......

Do you work for AT&T or something? It just seems weird when people jump in shocked about how much data someone is using. Maybe AT&T should have looked at what they were selling ("unlimited") more closely before offering it. It sounds like they are cracking down now. Seems fair in my opinion, though I'm glad to have not been caught yet (I keep my data usage low)

Getting tired of folks squabbling over completely off-topic commentary on this thread.

Let's keep this thread limited to those who've received tethering notices from AT&T (as in, the name of this thread - duh), and what little information they might have gleaned from interacting with customer service afterward. A few folks have posted a few decent tidbits from their interactions - let's keep that going.

why do you care how much data he uses?

And you do know that there are still areas in the U.S. (and around the world for that matter) where broadband service is unavailable.

Guess that's irrelevant when you're as awesome as you are...

Your a douche, why the **** do you care how much we're downloading? Why shouldn't we take advantage of something we're paying for? You work for att you prick don't you!? Get off this forum if you don't have any substance coming out your mouth.

I have to agree with the others, you're kinda an idiot. This does look like something a brainwashed AT&T retail store employee would write. Let me clue you in with a couple facts:

1) AT&T's promotional DSL rate, or "home internet" as your 1990 mind seems to call it, runs at $14.99 a month for 768k download and 128k upload. Seems to me it makes sense for this guy to use the wireless network at 1-5mbps down, and 300-1250k up... which is 3-20x faster than AT&T's "home internet" as you so blindly call it.

2) You telling him to get a job is funny. Sure, he may be downloading torrents, but he also may be uploading apps to a Sharepoint server where he's collaborating with other users. Just because you have to go into a store to work, and login to "clock in" to get paid doesn't mean there aren't programmers and other professionals who aren't sitting by the pool on their laptop working and using mobile data to upload their work. Not everyone is a clock-punching-ATT-retail-monkey.

3) Where did he say he's sticking it to the man? Regardless of my personal opinion agreeing or disagreeing with him, I can respect his perspective. When a company offers unlimited data with a device that's capable of consuming many gigs of data, unlimited is unlimited. I know your boss's boss's boss's boss's boss's boss's boss's boss's boss's boss's boss (Ralph De La Vega) doesn't know the difference between an unlocked and locked phone, so how can we possibly expect you to understand how the contract is interpreted from a legal standpoint, since you clearly just blindly repeat others rather than try to come up with any original opinion of your own.

4) You don't even have a fundamental understanding of IP technology. To make a comment "you must sit playing WOW all day on your tethered connection..." is so uneducated. I'm not a gamer, but I understand the fundamentals of how a game works, it actually uses VERY TINY amounts of data because it's only sending player game location data, not photos, not music, not large files of any kind. Seriously, get an education.

I agree with the others, this guy clearly works in an AT&T retail store. AT&T loves to send their employees memos to try and "train" them to think the way they do, and make generalizations like this guy makes... "clearly if he's using 60GB he's a bad person" ... lol... Maybe he's just taking full benefit of his contracted plan? If you move across town and move into an apartment highrise and the coverage isn't good inside, so you have to port your number to verizon. Do you think AT&T is going to let you out of your early termination fee? Hell no. LOL. They'll take full advantage of the contract they enter into and make that $325 off you, so why would you not think the same?

AT&T tries to make the issue emotional, because they're bent that they waited so long to upgrade the network now they have to do anything they possibly can to make their technology last as long as they can while they're upgrading, haha.

It never ceases to amaze me how bad the unionization of the workforce at AT&T retail stores has made the experience. What do you get when you combine retail AT&T employees with a Union? Nightmare. Uneducated, Unskilled workers w\ job protection. Scary!

He cares because at his work (the ATT store) they tell him that people like that guy are bad. HAHA. He drank the kool-aid.... he's a gonner already. :)

Fu$4 that guy, he's just wasting everyone's time. :) Ignore him. You're doing fine.

Great post bella92! I spoke with an att representative and he said that I could literally download alllll I want with the unlimited plan. Believe me I'm going to put his to test. I'm at nearly 80gb as of now, all of which is consumed at night never in the day just to preserve the network. I've told all my buddies that have the unlimited what that tool told me about we can download as much as we want as long as no tethering. Now I'm telling y'all, hit up that unlimited plan and take advantage of att instead of them taking advantage of us as were so used to by now. Sht, were spending thousands of dollars yearly don't we deserve the utmost appreciation of our service? I know I do, and I will be thundering my iPhone till the wheels fall off.

Cheers!!

Ps... I hope that att rep who posted on here earlier comes back. ;)

we have had some bad storms past month or so, my power goes out usually. so i tether just to give me something to do for 30 min to an hour. i try to stay away from downloading stuff, i keep it to just browsing. i havent recieved any kind of letter or whatever. i seriously dont use much.

i read part of this thread, people are saying even using a little will cause action. im taking a weekend trip next weekend and i plan to tether on the long ride(possible 4-6 hours). once again it will be just for browsing. will this be a problem? i still have my unlimited plan

No way to know. I know people on unlimited that tether a lot and have never been contacted and others that tethered just once and got nailed. Nobody knows for certain what AT&T is looking at or for.

I don't think anyone has nailed what will do it. I can say from my experience using mywi and tethering once every couple months and decently low usage (except one 300mb tethering weekend) had a message sent to me.

It did take them either one month from my last tether or three months for me to receive my notice though. So it is probably too soon to know for sure if things like PDAnet's hide feature actually works or not. I do know I am taking a trip in July and plan to use PDAnet for my internet and I might have something new to post at some point after that.

I wonder how many users with multiple iPhones on their account have received this notice? We have three, only one is jailbroken and see's some tethering. Usage varies from around 3gb to as high as 10gb one month for all accounts. So far no notice.

This would be an interesting poll or statistic.

I am in the exact scenario, 3 iPhones on one account. 1 iP4 with the unlimited plan (it's the jb one, sees 2-4 gig/month, but barely tether at all, and none since this thread started). The other 2 (iP4, 3GS) are on the lower tiered 2g plan (and they never come close to that limit).

FWIW.

I was in a similar situation as you, but was moving into a new home and had to tether to fill out some forms for a job, this was on 3/23-3/25. Got the notice on 4/20 then a text 2 days later. This was the only time I ever tethered.
