Yep just read that.

No one knows which of the tethering apps are undetectable by AT&T
PdaNET has two Stealth Modes - I got a response from the developer who told me that he has no idea if AT&T can detect his apps. Basically you are beta testing them

The MyWi developer is delusional then.

Haven't heard from the author of TetherMe

I've seen a few reports that people who ONLY tethered to their iPads never got caught. This suggests that the traffic generated from the iPad looks the same as traffic from the iPhone. I know that some people think that the TTL value is what AT&T is using to detect and some have tried to change network settings on their laptops to fool AT&T but no confirmation.

What we need is for everyone to tether for about 10 minutes then call AT&T demanding to know if there's any illegal tethering. Pretend that you loaned your phone to a friend or you think someone is hacking your phone.

Nope definitely didn't work for me as I changed my TTL and also used a VPN at the same time. I tethered once, only once after I got the first warning one month after that text. I tethered probably less than 100mb for like 30 minutes with MyWi just browsing youtube and the web. A few weeks passed and I was like niceee it worked then 3 weeks later...a text from AT&T saying..."Looks like you're still enjoying your tethering so we've upgraded you to the $45.. plan...." I was pretty . I gave them a call got off the hook and she said I will be still on my unlimited plan but they will still be monitoring my line and if they see tethering they will switch me back to the tethering plan.

Are there any reports of people who only use MyWi to their iPad getting caught? My theory is that using MyWi to only iOS devices is completely safe.

Yep I've heard reports of people getting caught tethering to their iPad using MyWi. From what I've read some of the people tethering to their ipads aren't even that much bandwidth. They are usually just browsing the web and maybe youtube that's all. So even with low bandwidth consumption they still get the email/text from AT&T. So it's not really safe with ipads either.

I was caught tethering to my ipad on mywi

Did you ever tether to any other device in the last four years?

Okay, I see lots of people saying they tether "to their iPad," but it seems from all of the comments that they mean they are using their iPad to connect to an iPhone that is running MyWi/TetherMe.

My question is, has anyone received any kind of notice from AT&T for running MyWi on an iPad 3G with unlimited data, and then connecting to that iPad with another device? It seems to me that these iPad 3Gs wouldn't be as tightly regulated as the iPhones. They're not even under any real kind of contract -- it's simply a month-to-month plan. Also, and maybe most importantly, there is no official tethering plan available for the iPad, so there would be nothing for AT&T to switch the account over to.

Anyone else have any thoughts about this?

Around the time I first saw this post I started tethering. Very infrequently and mostly just for browsing and checking e-mail.

Interesting that I've never received a notice.

That's too bad, as this is one of the first postings by someone who's tried to mask their tethering via TTL modification, and still has been flagged by AT&T. It would seem to verify that their network engineers are using another IP packet inspection method outside of TTL to identify tethering activity. Major bummer, albeit some networking experts on other forums have suggested that TTL count is just one of numerous means to determine tethering activity via packet inspection, and so the odds of TTL being the one were certainly against us.

Apparently they're getting around in phases, given the millions of mobile accounts that need to be audited. I suspect you'll be flagged eventually.

I wonder how many actual accounts are tethering though. There are a large number of iOS devices sold, but not all are iPhones. Then you have to consider ATT is only dealing with devices sold in the US, and not VZW iPhones either. Then you have to consider what percentage of people actually jailbreak their devices, and of those people, how many actually use a tethering app? It would be interesting to see.

I also wonder if VZW will do something similar in the future when they no longer offer the unlimited plan.

A couple times so that could be it but the majority was to the ipad.

at the begining level 2.

Then started doing level one... one week later.. boom... i am not sure that the level makes any difference... I have certainly uninstalled... ATT won.

Maybe we have a false alarm for the moment! Thing is the message came to my secondary phone that is on a 2gb-4gb w tethering plan!

I called att and the rep assured me that there has been no change in my unlimited plan!

Though i've been receiving all text messages to that phone regarding the account! I am not sure what is going on!

I do have the 4gb With tethering but kept using mywi to tether on that phone!

Headcase - I don't think this rules out TTL. This guy was using MyWi, which doesn't use the iPhone's internal APN. TTL could still be the "2nd level" check after the APN.

I'm convinced that it's APN (which Tetherme and possibly the newest PDAnet addressed) and TTL. I think the TTL thing might not come into play for people only tethering to iPads, as more than a few PDAnet/Tetherme users that only tether to iPads haven't gotten notices.

Still, I'm waiting until I can jailbreak my iPad2 before tethering again. Hopefully Sunday is Funday!! (Go to jailbreakmedotcom from your iPad!).

This is why I love Sprint, yes they don't have the Iphone, but I teather about 20+ GB a month and never get anything in the mail or phonecalls for that matter

Sprint is also not unlimited even thought they say so. They will stick it to you worse than AT&T once they notice your account and you will get a bill that goes back months for over $1000 bucks of data usages. Many had to deal with that with Sprint. Read the Sprint Forums. AT&T people are lucky to just get warnings as Sprint won't give you a warning.

Ttl makes huge sense to me!!! I had done the ttl
Change and no issues with pdanet level one!

Now, i changed my laptop on thursday and bammm txt on friday!

This would make some sense to me. I use TetherMe and I only tether my iPad.

Have you ever gotten a notice (I get the impression no)?

100% iPad, never a PC?

Did you JB the iPad (y/n) and if so did you change the TTL to 65?

Last one - what's your typical monthly data usage?

I appreciate any responses here.

No notice.

I was mistaken, just checked my laptop and it has my iPhone in the list of WiFi access points. I must have used it during my trip to SF.

iPad has not been JB'd.

I think you've dodged the warning text because your data usage is relatively low.

Call and asks for the specific times that you were tethering.

Att forcing unlimited data plan change

A coworker of mine told me he was called by an att rep and later recieved a letter telling him his unlimited data plan was being changed to a 45/month 4 tethering plan. Also they told him that they can tell that his 3gs(ios 3.13) has been jailbroken. He replied that he does not tether, which i believe because he doesn't know how, doesn't have the app(s) and doesn't even update his apps. His issue is still ongoing. I had this issue with att but via text. att did not indicate that they knew my i4(ios4.33) was jailbroken but i didn't and don't tether. It is my believe they are strong arming customers out of their unlimited data plan. For a moment a began to think i was the only one singled out.
