And if you read the docs for that API you would see that it is button only, as has been said this entire thread.

thought i could cross of another weak off of my Jb list. guess not

I just want to know what their reason for excluding text is.

And please spare me the "Apple is greedy and stupid!" crap. Excluding a feature like this doesn't benefit them at all.

I'm sure we'll see JB version using the private API messages uses. So the work is probably there it's just they haven't formalized it for the developer API.

They tend to have a habit of keeping a feature as in house for one release then using it to expand the API next year. I wouldn't call it greed maybe cautiousness (maybe over-cautiousness). Keep the feature controlled see how it reacts with new keyboards or stealing focus from working apps before opening it up. Maybe they just don't have enough QA staff to finalize the full API.

What is they say "no plan survives contact with the enemy". So while it would be nice to have it sooner, Apple has their way of doing things.

Very good points, this cleared it up for me. Thanks!

I guess a proper, bug-free implementation isn't as easy as it seems like it would be.

But how can we explain that in WWDC they said it would work well with 3rd party apps and showed us Facebook?

Think there might be some confusion still.

In the demo they showed Facebook notification with a Comment and a Like button. This is an open API - all apps will be able to supply actions like this. IIRC, up to 2 actions for banners and up to 4 for alerts. They can be background actions, such as 'Like', which presumably sends a 'like' in the background and does nothing else. Or UI actions such as 'Comment', which will bring the Facebook app to the foreground so you can comment (this is probably the same as tapping on the notification in the Facebook example, but I'm sure you can use your imagination to think of a potential secondary UI action an app's notification could use that differs from its primary action).

However, the quick reply feature for messages - that doesn't appear to be an API. No other app can give notifications where you can directly type into the notification banner.

And if you read the docs for that API you would see that it is button only, as has been said this entire thread.

"You use this class to specify the text that is displayed in the button and the information your app needs to perform the corresponding action."

What if one of these obtainable informations is a text input by the user? ;)

Does this also mean widgets like "Tap to Tweet" and "Tap to Post" from iOS 6 will not make a return? (These are still present in OS X, and it even has a compose message button too)

Quick reply, open API?

as i read it they can only add a "comment" button or something like that and if u tap it the whole app opens :-/ totally sucks

That would suck big time! So the function will be totally useless. I still hope for a quick reply for 3rd apps.

Did you guys see the update from Twitter today? They added interactive notifications but when you want to quick reply, it takes you to the app! So that's really disappointing that means that you can't quick reply with third-party apps.
