There's a slim chance that forum hacks and add-ons might not like it.

In addition I've had problems using the Quick Reply's text box in Safari and Internet Explorer.

This has come up a number of times, and we've always declined to do it because we prefer that people think before they post. It sounds dumb, but making people actually go through the effort of loading another page decreases the "chattiness" of the discussion and increases post quality.

But that's certainly not to say that it's a final decision, and we appreciate continued suggestions and discussion regarding these types of things.

It sounds dumb because it is dumb :p

Are you saying all the forums out there that have quick reply activated have lower quality posts? Please tell me you can see how ridiculous that sounds.

Couldn't you at least try it?

We have no plans to implement Quick Reply.

I've posted "the long way" more than 20,000 times (not to mention that I preview every post before submitting it), so over the years I could have saved hours by having Quick Reply, but I know that it helps me consider what I'm posting more carefully. If the other long-time high-posting members and I can put up with it to avoid excess chattiness, I'm sure newer and less-frequent posters can too.

I think that the quick reply should be considered perhaps a bonus for people of sufficient post count and or contributers. I think that it would allow experienced, trusted members of the community to interact more efficiently.

There's no evidence to support it avoids chattiness. If it helps you fine, then don't use it yourself - but most of us are used to it from all the other forums out there and find it a pain in the backside not having it here.

The only reason I have seen admins not use it is when they want to increase their page impressions/revenue - is that the real reason here too?

No it's not. That side effect has never come up as a factor.

Well you'll have to forgive me for coming to the conclusion that isn't the case - given there's no evidence to support that allowing quick reply degrades the quality of posts, especially when you consider all the other forums out there using it with no loss of 'quality'.

And there's also no evidence that disallowing it degrades the experience of the members.

I'm not one to claim that "it's always been done that way" as any semblance of a valid reason to continue, but I will toss out, "if it's not broken…" And it clearly isn't, given the number of members (over 298,000), posts (in the millions), and the relative stature of MR in the community of forums, regardless of the subject matter. These are all good indicators that something is clearly being done right. Also, "other forums" is not a very strong reason, as MR outscales many of them by a huge margin. I won't touch the "everybody else does it" remarks, though. :p

I'd have to side with Q on this; the amount of time many spend formulating a useful post or response negates the value of a "Quick Response" feature. In point of fact, I fail to see how that would enhance my ability to post something of any value, other than to be able to claim "First!" I can do that well enough with Forum Spy, should that be my goal.

Actually there is - every person requesting it here is proof of that ;)

I also think it's insulting to the member-base, effectively telling them you want to make them jump through hoops to post because you feel they'll post a load of twaddle otherwise.

It's not insulting if it wasn't there to begin with. If it was there originally, and they took it away because post quality was sub-par and they told us so, then you can consider it an insult. :p

I find it quite tedious having to click on 'reply' each time I want to post!

Can someone turn this on please?

Me too, however, with regards to threading, why do we do that vB.com does, have it so that you have to press the button to enable the quick reply box?

IMO, this solves the threading issue, and, gives people more time to think.

I'd also like to be able to see the end of the page, rather than just an ad, it's looks kinda wierd...

on snowboardingforums (where i have disappeared for the last few months) they have quick reply. i agree with this- although the long way is annoying, i have written a lot of stupid things on that site. i recommend anyone who wants quick reply to spend a week on another forum, your opinion will change! :)

I own 3 forums and I tell you I post 80% less on here just because its a pain to post. I hate posting here. I only post when there is something on my mind or when I'm in a good mood. I've been a member here for over a year and I've posted less than 200 times and i've been revoked the privilege to post in the marketplace just because I post less...
