https://www.statista.com/statistics/266136/global-market-share-held-by-smartphone-operating-systems/

The problem with the "people I know" stats is that people we know are generally people like us, maybe family (much like us), and friends (probably more like us than not), etc. For instance, almost all people I know are white Americans who live in Florida, but that doesn't mean that ALL people are white, all are Americans, and all people only live in Florida. It can certainly look like that if I "poll" only "people I know" but that's the common mistake many of us make when we're slinging around our "99.9%" claims and so on... often based on a survey of as little as just the lone person writing the post.

Android:ios is rapidly becoming Windows:macOS. That's not putting down iOS, macOS or Apple, just pointing out that this is basically a repeat of decisions made from when Apple had THE mouse & windows-oriented OS and a challenger came along years later... who then proceeded to make decisions to catch up and then take over the dominant share of that market.

Deja Vu?

Just to mention few little things I am passionate about:

- Apple Pay on Apple Watch
- Unlocking Macbook with Apple Watch
- Silent alarm
- Timers
- Torch (might sound and feel as a gimmick, but it's useful)
- Apple Watch + Airpods (I can leave iPhone behind)
- Apple Watch as remote for music, podcasts
- LastPass Apple Watch app

Then why does it seem I see Apple Watches everywhere?

You do? I've seen exactly two Apple watches in the wild in the last three years. BUT: I live in Germany, not the US. Apple isn't remotely as big here as the company apparently is in the US.

I have passionately requested replacements for my FitBit around 3 times back when I had one...

I wouldn't say I'm passionate about my AW3. Is anyone really? Last time I was passionate about Apple product, it was my iPhone 4S and rMBP Late 2013.

The thing about AW3 is that it'ss lacking in so many departments. Yes, it might be the best smartwatch on the market (mind you, not sports tracker!) but it still kind of sucks. If Apple fixed these issues:
  1. No custom watch faces. I just cannot believe in that, after three revisions and three watchOS'es, still only limited to stock watch faces. Just look at some cool concepts online, or even better old, custom Pebble designs.
  2. Inconsistent HR sensor - I had way to many running workouts with red HR diagram saying there weren't enough readings. Just to point out, during workouts I tighten my AW so it's snug on my wrist.
  3. Inconsistent barometer - same bicycle route on one day gives elevation of 10m, the other day 40m. How can I trust it?
  4. Not even one really useful app.

I have no idea whether I am "passionate" about the Apple Watch, but I can say that after many years of trying to find a form of regular exercise that I can stick with, the Apple Watch and to a lesser extent AirPods have literally changed my life.

Being able to easily track daily targets, whether it be exercise time, distance travelled, or a variety of other things, plus for the past year having headphones which are always in my pocket and easy to use, means that I have found it easy to stick to an exercise schedule for approaching 3 years now. I am a lot healthier and fitter, have completed some significant challenges which I would otherwise not have considered (such as 60 mile day/night hikes), am scheduled to go on a hike to Everest Base Camp and have raised over £2,500 for charity.

Without the changes to my life that the Apple Watch started I wouldn't have done any of those things.

Am I passionate about it? Do I love it? I don't know, but it's bloody good for a device that I was very sceptical about when first announced and only purchased after being convinced to give a go by other people after it was launched.

Having now upgraded to the Series 3, it has got a lot better. It can certainly be used for things like sleep tracking now. I keep mine charged by just putting on it's stand when I take a shower or occasionally for a short time whilst reading. It has never yet gone below 50% charge.

The thing is, that Apple Watch is basically an iPhone accessory.

I own the original stainless series, and like it, but, honestly even if you buy the latest LTE, you still need to connect it to iPhone. If you could, at least, do it from iPad or computer.

Once they somehow make it independent of an iPhone, I will buy new one.

I wear my series 3 daily. I don't know if that's about passion or not, but..
but props to fitbit, to me. this is the only non-Apple smartwatch/fitness band on the market today. The least tacky of them all.

"I have yet to meet anyone who owns an Apple Watch who's passionate about the product," said Fitbit's chief financial officer Bill Zerella. "If you don't have an Apple phone, you're not buying an Apple Watch… 80% of the world is Android, not Apple."

I haven't met Jim Dalrymple but he's pretty passionate about it.
The second statement is probably true. But every report I've seen still says that Apple has the majority of smartwatch sales, in spite of it.

If you dont own a Nintendo Switch you can't buy one of the best games of all time - Zelda BOTW - Limiting your market allows you to really concentrate on it hard unlike the Android eco structure where they just seem to throw stuff and see if it sticks - Hasn't it just been rebranded to Wear OS? (rolls eyes)

I dont think Apple will be losing any sleep over Mr Fitbit's comment as they're too busy watching the cash come in from what is now almost a Fortune 300 company on its own.

Zerella should be careful what he wishing for and also to not taunt the gods. It's true that only iPhone users would buy an AW today. But that doesn't mean Apple couldn't push out an untethered AW tomorrow like it did when it did the unthinkable - iPod and iTunes for Windows.

Also his comments reek of Balmer's snark when the first iPhone was announced. It's true I like, not love, my AW, because it's running metrics are not as fertile as Garmins. But I do know plenty of people that do love theirs. I also don't really know anyone who wears a Fitbit anymore, so there is that. I think the guy should just concentrate trying to make a decent smartwatch. The newest model looks like ass if you ask me.

“We’ve learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone. PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They’re not going to just walk in.”

Palm CEO, 2006

To be fair, PC guys, especially back then, were not Mac guys. It was PC vs Mac, even if Macs are personal computers. So his prediction was kinda dead on. PC (MS/Windows) guys didn't figure it out. It took people that "think different" to upend the phone industry (and then a sniveling former Apple board member and some S. Korean firm to copy Apple's concept).

I raise my hand to meet Bill Zerella. I am very passionate about my Apple Watch, so passionate that my friends and family all bought one. Last time I heard someone I knew the owned a Fitbit it burned their wrist.
Thanks for the laugh Bill.

FitBit created a product for people who wanted an inexpensive, non-complex device to track fitness. This is specifically an audience who doesn’t have a technology lust. These folks bought one years ago and it still does what they want it to do and there’s no reason to upgrade or buy a new model.

What FitBit would need to do is to be able to track some completely new aspect of fitness in order to sell more units.

It also wouldn’t hurt to simply the product line.

"I have yet to meet anyone who owns an Apple Watch who's passionate about the product"

Interesting. I love my AW3. In a post in a group of avid riders, the comments in favor of the AW3 far outweigh the ones against it, and the Fitbit comments are just bad for their brand.

My experience with earlier Fitbit products burned me so bad I'd not ever consider one again. Period.

Poor IHeartMedia. Lets all get together and sigh for them *SIGH*

Price per pound, the HomePod is probably a great deal. I just don't see buying one yet.

And on Siri, it sounds like Williamson is trying to rehab his tenure and firing at Apple by spraying the Siri project with urine. Siri was something that Apple purchased, and at the time of purchase needed a lot of work. Apple didn't, apparently, put much work into it, post-purchase. They need to correct that as soon as they can. They are losing market share to competition. It's embarrassing.

Is that right? If so that's nuts. Sitting here I can think of like, 3 people(?) I know who use Android. Like total. Everyone else has an iPhone. This is crazy.
80% of that 80% probably can’t afford an iPhone so that’s why they are more “popular” if apple made phones in the £/$100-400 they would take all of those lower market sales from android
