Account edge? you must be joking. Licence: £149, Service Agreement: £108 per year. The service agreement is mandatory, year in year out. No way! Kiss my shiny metal ass!

Ah... No way, theres a service/year with Accountedge? :(

I've been waiting for the QB'12 for the last few months I didn't want to buy QB'11 since it had to be soon. I'm trying to figure what I should use for accounting, and I've even used xSilva Lightspeed and they had a billion bugs with the most expensive program ever.

I guess it looks like I might have to get QB'12 then unless there are more posts in this thread until QB is for sale.

You understand this is for business, right? I deal with companies that have 100-200 employees. The enterprise software we use runs around $800-2000/month. The accounting portion is around 1/4 of that, I'd estimate.

I run a small business, I'd rather have the money, than pay an annual fee. I looked for years for software that can help me in my business. The vast majority of software out there is woefully inadequate, and quite frankly looks and feels like it was written by blind badgers. For companies with larger turnovers, the fee might be insignificant, but for small business like mine where I must keep costs down as much as possible, it is a non starter. I shall until I can find something that suits my needs, continue to use spreadsheets.

I still don't see anything about multiple currencies, which is the only reason we still have the Windows version. :(

EDIT: I do see it, in the "Which features, if currently used, would make it difficult to switch from QuickBooks for Windows?" question in the FAQ.

The following features available in QuickBooks for Windows are not currently available in QuickBooks for Mac:

QuickBooks Payroll Services, like Basic, Enhanced and Assisted Payroll
Accountant's Copy
Access to 3rd party applications that integrate to QuickBooks for Windows via the QuickBooks SDK
Multiple currencies
Units of Measure
Price levels
Inventory assemblies
Online bill pay and funds transfer
Industry-specific reports and features

So long as anything exists on that list, it is "NO SALE".

The only time that there is any excuse for not having feature equity and 100% data transportability...is when the software costs <$10/seat.

Intuit - Total idiots

For us mac folks, Intuit is a non-entity. They make half-baked products for the fastest growing and most loyal segment of the personal computing world. They insult us with junk software.

Who owns them? Microsoft??

Hopefully someone will make a real mac-based product that will kick Intuit's sorry butt out of the mac market completely. Unfortunately, I have yet to see it as since Moneywell, ibank, others are not ready for prime time, IMHO.

My xp-based Quicken 2009 product will expire in another year. Then what?

Why doesn't Apple just make a kick ass accounting software program? They would probably see sales from 98% of the installed base!

iBalance for home use.
iBalance Pro for business.

Probably take them 3 months to put out a superior product. Ok, who am I kidding... 3 days.

Sure.... like Final Cut X that they effed it up.

Wouldn't that be nice? I'd do it myself but I don't need much of the extra accounting options at this point, so it'd be really minimal. :)

Why did Apple stop making pro rack mount servers? Because they don't give a flying crap about business! They're moving away from true "pro" products as fast as they can run lately from hardware offerings to software that is worse than the software it replaced. Apple is aiming squarely at mediocre these days and apparently making a lot of money doing it. People used to make fun of Microsoft for making so much garbage of an operating system and bloated software galore, yet look how many people use that stuff. Apple seems to be heading for the same less is more philosophy as of late and the public rewards them by giving them record profits. Those of us that would prefer higher quality or faster products or more pro features are now a minority.

AccountEdge Misinformation

Account edge? you must be joking. Licence: £149, Service Agreement: £108 per year. The service agreement is mandatory, year in year out. No way! Kiss my shiny metal ass!

This post made me inquire directly to the company- here is the feedback:

Thank you for your inquiry. I'd be glad to clarify this the best I can. There is NO annual fee simply for using AccountEdge. Once you buy AccountEdge Basic or Pro, it's yours for life, just as it is, without us ever interfering with you again. Service fees come into play when you're looking to run payroll or you'd like Tech Support.

For payroll, the actual functionality within the software will never stop working. You'll always be able to process payroll and cut a check. What you won't get without being on a Payroll Tax Service Plan is any federal or state updates that come out over time. So, for that, there is a yearly service fee. But with this service also comes free upgrades. It's worth noting that the upgrades are not an additional cost as other products (such as QuickBooks) charge a separate fee for tax updates/payroll functionality and upgrades to the software.

For tech support, we offer a year of unlimited call-in Tech Support if you wish to purchase it. You can buy it individually for $199, or you can add it on to a Payroll Tax Service Plan for $50 more. We also offer free email support and we have a users forum that is quite extensive where you can find answers or ask questions of your own.

This is in regards to the US and Canadian versions. Other versions outside of the US and Canada may have different pricing policies. The gentleman who posted mentioned "pounds" or Euros. I believe he may be in the UK which has their own associated AccountEdge program that we do not control the costs of.

Intuit New features?? Enhancements???

Intuit continues to market lame software. Lion made me do research on personal user financial programs. Chose iBank and it imports files nicely from Q 2007. :)

Not any of my money to Intuit for any product.:p

Built my own Filemaker database for invoicing.

Someone I know uses FreshBooks. I'm still trying to figure out what is best. Right now I make my own invoices in Illustrator—as a designer, I'm picky about design—but I'm still in the very small—sole proprietor—stage. I still need to get an accountant and set up my company.

Sorry to burst your bubble but it doesn't matter how pretty a bill is, it's still a bill and it's something that gets glanced over quickly so the accountant can move on. You'd be much better off designing paid jobs than worry about the look and feel of the invoice.

Freshbooks is a good alternative for easy invoice tracking and management.

There's no bubble to burst. I'm not some hippy-dippy, idiot designer. I know that it doesn't matter to most people, but I sweat the details. Actually, it's more the case that you don't think it matters, but it really does. Besides, I'm paid to sweat the details. And people have noticed changes to my invoice before. I'm not going to send them some crappy invoice because it saves me 30 seconds.

It's not like I make a new design for each client, either. It takes maybe two minutes to check my time, or my agreement and save a new invoice.

At this point, Freshbooks isn't even worth it until I have an accountant to send stuff to. Right now, it would cost me more to pay their monthly fee, since I have more than three clients, than to keep making my own invoices.

It'd probably be worth the $192 a year to just sit down for a few hours and make my own PHP-based invoicing system. The problem is I need an accountant willing to accept something other than crappy quickbooks stuff. That's the only reason I'd need anything other than what I'm doing really.

I hope I didn't come off as rude, but it's annoying when people act like design doesn't matter. Even if it's only something someone looks at for just a number. At least they can find the number quickly since I made sure that it stands out. :)

Thanks for vouching for it, though. When I need it, I'll check it out.

No, not rude at all. I started off as a designer and know good design matter. Back in college I made the mistake of doing and redoing my own website 7 times when I should have focused on getting more clients. Just trying to make sure you don't end up down the same path. :)

Ah. Gotcha. No worries. Clients always come first—like the old bit about the shoemaker's kids who go without shoes. Believe me, I spend more time making art and work for clients than I do on designing stuff for myself! :)

I've been down the redesign it, redesign it, redesign it, road long enough. I've taken Seth Godin's advice—just ship.

Thanks for saying that though. It is important to remember. And it's good for new designers to see. I've already learned that lesson, and it has a lot to do with how I got here. I've been sort of forced into freelancing due to the economy. So I kind of just worked off of people I knew and, well, it's gone quite a bit better than expected. So my goal was just getting clients because my wife and I wanted to pay our mortgage. And luckily I knew a lot of people, and kept clients from my previous stints in freelancing (the first time the economy screwed me).

Lately I've been trying to focus more on my own work and then someone calls for something, and the next moment everyone is calling me. It snowballs. I can't complain and I haven't looked back. :)

Good luck with your own work!

I posted this on the Intuit support forum.

I purchased QuickBooks 2011 for Mac from a retailer on September 21. I wanted to wait until 2012 was released, but my trial would expire before then. Intuit told me that if I purchased 2011 within a certain window before 2012's release, that I would get a free upgrade.

Yesterday, October 6, I called Intuit to request my free upgrade. They wasted 90 minutes of my time to tell me that the "free" upgrade costs $14.95 shipping plus tax (how do you charge tax on something that's free or on shipping?).

Because I purchased from a retailer, Intuit's system is biased against me as a customer and will not allow me to upgrade for free with a download and new license key. Instead, the archaic system requires that I mail several pieces of information, including my credit card number, to receive the upgrade on CD-ROM.

This a terrible waste of resources: paper, shipping, discs, time with filing, storage, handing, and so one—doesn't look very "green" for a software company.

This is also a serious security threat. I would be a fool to write my credit card information on a piece of paper and mail it!

This is unethical and unfair to customers who chose to purchase from anywhere other than directly from Intuit.

This is deception to promise a free upgrade but require $14.95 plus tax from customers who purchased elsewhere. More like punishment for free choice.

So I want a final answer from Intuit: how can I get my free upgrade migration from 2011 to 2012 without paying for it, as was promised? Or will Intuit continue to use an archaic, biased, insecure, slow, wasteful policy to lose my business?

I'm only one person. But if Intuit continues with such unethical practices, I will vote with my dollars by returning QuickBooks 2011 for Mac and purchase a competitor's product.

Yea, thats pretty lame.

With given all the comments in this thread-

I just noticed that 2012 is now for sale on Intuit's site @ ~$229, but does anyone have a discount code, or anything?

I've been using QB on my mac with an older version, but I don't know if I really feel like migrating my data into another invoice application, but it would probably be easier for me to just get the new '12 QB.

Any thoughts?

With a single tweet, I got the conclusion of this matter. I mentioned both @Intuit and @QuickBooks. They asked me to direct-message my email address and registered phone number. A few minutes later, I received an email with a download link and license key. Then they also sent an email "order confirmation" for putting me in their system as owning QuickBooks 2012.

When I asked why it was so hard (or impossible) to get this over the phone—the standard procedure they tell customers to follow—the Intuit rep. said, "I have been thinking about your question for over an hour and the best answer with which I can come up is: Bureaucracy."

Looks like I'll stick with QuickBooks 2012 for Mac for now. But I'm still interested in looking at AccountEdge as a better designed-for-Mac experience and more intuitive thought.
