well it's killed micrologic for me, freezes on the splash screen and I can't even force quit or bring up the console so I can type "G finder" and get out of it.

Also, it seems to slow the system down while it's running even if there's no movie open after you close a movie window.

That aside, they've improved the smoothing quality on scaled video and MPEG video plays back a lot smoother aswell.

I'd love to see it running on a G4 under OS X but I'm just glad I've not been left out of the fun by having an old G3 with OS 9.1

I hate the way it's broken micrologic though, protools LE runs fine with it installed but I still use micrologic sometimes for midi when I've got too many applications open to launch protools LE.

I hope we see MP4 playback in iTunes soon, It sounds great to me.

If I'd had the damn thing for any length of time I wouldn't complain about it, but you buy *any* piece of software and find there's a new version just a few months later and no upgrade path it's not unreasonable to be pissed. At the very least Apple should have been posting big "WARNING - QT6 IMMINENT AND ANY KEY YOU BUY NOW WON'T WORK" notices all over the Quicktime item in the Apple store for the past six months.

I'll buy it eventually, but since I've not got any imminent video work planned I'm going to leave buying QT6 Pro until I absolutely need to.

I will be getting mine tonight, since you don't pay tax or such nonsense when you do it online.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but here's a little snippet from when I bought QT5 Pro, just three months back:

PURCHASE INFORMATION

ORDER

Part Number: D1584LL/A
Product Name: QuickTime Pro for Mac OS and Mac OS X
Unit Price: $29.99
Quantity: 1
Net Price: $29.99

ORDER SUBTOTAL: $29.99
ESTIMATED TAX AMOUNT: $1.68

ESTIMATED ORDER TOTAL: $31.67

Maybe you're lucky in that they won't charge for your state, but they certainly charge for Wisconsin, and it's not even as if there's an Apple store here (yet).

Al

Anybody notice the 10.2 buttons on the QT page?...

... I really hate to add fuel to the fire, but I think it's *very* strong evidence of a 10.2 release/announcement in the near future (MWNY, most likely).

Listen, awrc, I purchased my QT5 pro key 5 months ago. Even though there was tax listed on the web order, the actual charge to my account did NOT include any sales tax. Wait and see when you purchase yours.

I actually purchased two keys back in Feb. (by accident) and even though the web order showed a total of $62.98, the ACTUAL charge to my account was $59.98. Do the math... :p :D

Did you check the actual charge on the account you used to make the purchase??? Unless Wisconsin is a total pr*ck about sales tax, I'd be surprised if you were charged tax on it.

They can get around the charge being different with the word "estimated".

Well hm, if I recall correctly, that would make $90 total having gone toward Apple's QuickTime Pro in the past few years, for doing stuff as simple as being able to edit movies and view "special" trailers. I dunno 'bout you, but I don't have a whole lot of money right now, especially since I just bought a new car.

And would you like it if Adobe charged full price for every new version of Photoshop regardless of if you paid full price for the previous version?

If the full price was $30, I'd gladly pay it... :p

Considering how I registered QT when there was a free upgrade to the pro version, I have only had to purchase a QT5 key (my old key worked for version 4 and the early OS 9 version of 5, but not for the OS X version). So I will purchase the QT 6 key. QT5 was out for more then a few months, so I don't feel bad about getting the QT6 key now.

QT7 is probably at least a year away, and who knows if you will need a new key or not for the pro features. Buying, or not buying something just because you think you MIGHT have to pay for an upgrade later is more then a touch moronic.

I can understand money being a touch tight. With my two vehicle purchases this year, as well as other things, I am not rolling in money. Things will improve in the next 6-8 months though, since one bill will go away early next year. At that point, I will put those funds to pay down another bill. Becuase of that, I probably won't be purchasing a new Mac next year, even if the G5 does come out. I might be able to get one in 2004, but more likely in 2005.

This might be the reason why some QT5 Pro keys work and some don't. Again, MIGHT.

Remember back to the Pro key upgrade from QT4 to QT5? If you purchased your QT4 after a certain time (just before the release of QT5) you could upgrade to Pro 5 for free. I wonder if this is the case for QT5 to Pro 6. Has anyone purchased very recent keys to 5 and have them work for 6? And has anyone purchased QT5 keys from, like, last year and have them not work with the Pro upgrade to 6? If this is not the case, then obviously I would be wrong.

But I do remember that Apple clearly stated on their website the deal with the Keys from 4 to 5.

And, heck, I'm gonna let the cat (not Jaguar :D) out of the bag....

The free way to view movies full screen would be using a free (and legal) application called Present Movie. (You may have to search for PresentMovie...I found it at download.com). There are some problems with some files, especially mp4 video, so that's why I would recommend Pro.

I have a problem with the new Quicktime plugin and Mozilla 1.0

Every time I go to the Apple trailer site, Mozilla crashes. A type 7 error apparently.

Well titman, I'm having 0 issues viewing QuickTime content with the latest version of ie and QT6... You might have to wait for a new release of mozilla to be able to watch the trailers again... :p... [Nelson voice] Haaa Haaaaa [/Nelson voice] :D

there's a bunch more features to qt pro than just full screen, but indeed, that's one of the main aspects for some i'm sure...

Oh yeah, watching my "acquired" MPEGS of Babylon 5 in full screen rocks.

Yeah, you and me both! It all depends on the motivation, right? :D

I hear ya. I was all set for a new PowerMac, but it looks like that's a ways off! I'm between jobs right now too so that makes things even tighter. I swore years back I wouldn't replace my G4 400 until the specs tripled. Scary, I'm still waiting.

Well the specs might barely make the cut this year. But just barely... :(

I swore years back I wouldn't replace my G4 400 until the specs tripled. Scary, I'm still waiting.

It was quadruple with me, I've got a 300Mhz G3.

I also want it for the price I paid for my G3 not over £2000 or some stupid price like that. I guess what I want could show up at MWSF rather than MWNY. an entry level powermac with a 1.2Ghz CPU and DDR would be great.

minus the cost of my SCSI CD Writer, 128Mb RAM upgrade and external modem, a mid range powermac G4 with a CDRW instead of superdrive would come in at less than I've paid so far and I'd have all those extras built in. I just know I'll never have nearly £2000 to spend on a mac so I have to aim low and buy either an end of life (right after MW event blow out sales are good!) or entry level model or I'm left out of the all fun for cost reasons.

Still a 4 x Mhz boost, a 4 x system bus increase (if it's DDR), 4 x the RAM capacity, all those extra ports I won't need PCI cards for, the extra slots and the faster graphics card all add up to a 1.2Ghz G4 being something worth waiting for seeing as I've got a late '97 beige G3 (bought weeks after the B & W G3s came out).
