Gonna be uncool and unpopular in this thread :D but one thing I like about QT X is the Share->Itunes option. Liked how easy it was to dump a wmv file (via Flip4Mac+QT) to iTunes to my new iPhone 3GS.

I do agree that QT X is lacking in various features that existed in QT 7, but after reading the Ars Technica article, I can see why... and like another poster, would expect features to start being reintroduced in QT X as they get reimplemented in Cocoa.

The ArsTechnica review is a bad joke. Would any one accept the following: "as we had to completely rewrite Finder, we did not manage to add all features it previously had. It's much faster now. But you'll have to wait for the next update until you may delete files. Also there's no way to autosort the files yet, but there is a terminal prompt you can use if you want the files in a folder sorted by e.g. their name."

They should have kept QT 7 the default and release QTX when it's ready. Noone forced them to default to an unfinished app in 10.6.

What a joke.

The Ars Technica review is the most detailed and comprehensive review of 10.6 that exists as it explains all of the underlying technology and most of the methodology behind the architecture changes in the new operating system.

Your little pundit spouting though is certainly a joke.

Ha, ha, ha.

QTX doesn't work with Perian but QTX Player does since it uses QT7 to do it.

The pressure of getting Snow Leopard out of the door before Windows 7 really shows. Overall it's nowhere near as polished and that shows in all the small things.

I think it's reasonable that QT X doesn't have all the editing features of QT7 Pro but missing even many of the basic playback options is just weak. Not having any better codec support than QT7 doesn't help either.

Completely disappointed with Quicktime X. I strongly feel that an apology and explanation from the Quicktime Dev Team is in order. Anyone else agree?

Read the AT review linked earlier in the thread for a (very) comprehensive rundown of why they needed to introduce QT X and why they haven't completely feature-replicated QT7 Pro in QT X yet. Having read that a few days ago, I can't say I really blame Apple for introducing QT X the way they have and I think the way QTKit uses either QT X or QT7 as appropriate is pretty clever.

If you need to edit, use QT7 Pro - it still works fine and is on the SL installer disc. Or, if you've got a bigger job to do, use iMovie, FCE or FCP. It's not the end of the world, and in the end QT X will be a far better, more robust framework than QT7.

Desperation..

It didn't help Apple, when they make customers feel desperate to get their hands on snow leopard! It's not that Microsoft never made this error in the past with Vista!

Yeah as much as i love QT X and its look it has caused my mac to lock up 3 times in 2 days. Nothing would work, not even putting it to sleep and waking it, it had to be a hard shut down =[

And thats the first time ive ever had to do that in the 2 years and 10 months i've been a Mac user.

Roll on 10.6.1 which will fix these issues with a bit of luck.

It's lame that quicktime cant play MKV without you have to install thirdparty stuff.
Even more lame is the lack of GPU acceleration

umm
how do you clear all the data if you view videos online???? In Quicktime 7, you can clear the cache, or downloaded Quicktime data (IE like if I view movie trailers in apple's site)...

QT X really is a bit of a letdown

Apple never got anyone's hopes up over Snow Leopard. They delivered what they said they would, a tweaked Leopard.

The hype was created by the media.

Wrong, QT7 is fine.

Actually, if SL is to go to a 64 bit kernel by default on any point release, QT7 will not be fine, as it is bloated and inefficient. It is a build on an old application, is in carbon, and like iTunes needs a re-write.

QTX is the foundation of that rewrite, and whilst it is buggy, and feature incomplete, it is effectively a 1.0 release. I need not remind you how bad OS X 10.0, 10.1 or 10.2 were..
