Mistakes happen.

I ordered a refurbished G4 mini a couple of months ago. I ordered one with only 256 MB of RAM thinking I would upgrade it later with third party RAM. But, when it arrived it had 1 gig! (it also had 10.3 installed and a pair of bad 10.4 install dvds, but apple fixed that without a problem.) So, apple does make mistakes for the better some times.

Yours in Christ,
Thursday

I know apple did it with the mini before, but that was only a slight processor bump and some more VRAM - and it didn't make sense then either. This would represent a very significant upgrade, and I see no reason to keep it silent.

CPU update would be cheap

I call 'screw up', too. The processor boost alone would be one thing, but combined with hard drive and optical upgrades, this seems EXTREMELY unlikely. (I mean, come on, that's a computer that SHOULD go for $849.) Even the $799 mini doesn't come stock with a 100 GB drive.

Too massive an upgrade at the low end to be unannounced.
it is not too difficult to browse the web for Core sole, if you do so, you will find that:
- a Coresolo is almost as expensive as a Core Duo similarly clocked
- there are almost no more stock of Core solo
- Intel is stopping Core solo production, or has already stopped it.

A mistake could be the right explanation, but then, why a 100GB HD??
the current high-end Mac mini on the applesotre features a 80GB HD...

oh yes, I forgot, Combo drive are becoming more expensive than SuperDrive. ;)

Compare with other "mini" PC's...

Remember the minis are small, that means some expensive parts like the laptop hard drives. It's not realistic to compare a mini to a bargain tower.
If you compare the Mac mini against other "Mini" PC's, then they come out as very good value for money. :)

Yes, sure, although it's depending on the definition of mini. If it's as mini as the Mini, then yes. The only alternative seems to be the AOpen Barebone, which is a ridiculously overpriced imitation. But if you settle for a barebone like the Shuttle ones or booksized ones (e.g. from Asus), you can get a better equipped PC for the same price (they use standard drives and sometimes offer AGP oder PCIx, amongst a PCI slot or two).

If this wouldn't be an accident, shouldn't there be more reports of upgraded Minis now?

The shuttle ones are like 10 times bigger than the Mini, not a fair comparison IMO.

Fry's

Well something is up. In the Fry's Electronics add today they are listing the Core Duo Mac mini 1.66/512/80/Superdrive with keyboard and a mouse for $649 - Looks like they are clearing them out as it also notes "Some Demo Some Open Box"

I agree!

What he got IS possible under the old models (take the top Mini and choose the next HD size up), so I wonder if the BTO people just put the someone else's machine back into his box?

Yes, I think that that's exactly what happened. Especially since he ordered a mini (core solo) with 1GB of RAM, which is a BTO configuration, the standard one only comes with 512MB. Now imagine someone ripping open hundreds of mini's every day that look exactly the same to fill them with extra stuff. How easy is it to put one in the wrong box? I'd say a mixup is easily made.

There would also be more people with the same story if it was really an upgrade.

Yeah, the Shuttle is huge compared to the Mac Mini, but then there is only the AOpen in the size of the Mac Mini, apart from some boxes that can barely be called a PC. And the Shuttle and ASUS are still pretty small. And I doubt that the size difference matters that much to most customers.

So it might be that they are selling everything they have for a big revamp... bigger than going from Core Solo to all Core Duo I guess. Still waiting for more reports to see if it was an accident :( (I hope not)

I was going to get a new Mini in July. After a revision. Still waiting. So I finally said screw it and appropriated my wife's 12" Powerbook and will officially retire my G4 tower to target disk mode. That will keep me going a while longer, the PB is so much snappier than the old G4. And I have my 19" screen for dual monitor. So at this point I might just wait for Merom Minis or until March for X3000 Leopard loaded Merom Minis.

Anyone know if you can mount both G4 internal drives on the PB in target disk mode or if only the main drive appears? All my music/video is on the 2nd drive.

All drives should appear on your PB. You can even use the optical drive in your PM.

Really? Kewl! Though I don't know what I will need it for. My wife made the mistake of ordering her PB with a combo, though I urged her to get a SD, and then in the week between ordering and arriving she had already changed her mind that she wanted the SD. She's paid for that mistake for the last 3 years. To this day we still don't have a SD equipped machine. Which among other reasons is why I really want a new Mac.

Confirmed though specs don't match exactly what the original poster reported.

Check the apple store.

High end mac mini gets Core Duo at 1.66 GHz, 512MB memory, 80 GB HD, and SuperDrive. Same integrated Intel graphics, unfortunately.

Huh?

This is either a fake or a fluke.

All mini's will be Core 2 Duo soon.
Where do you know from?

@breakaway: What's so special? Isn't that the normal spec anyway? (I'm not really familiar with the high end Mac Mini...)

How did this rumor make it so far? Where's this guy's proof? Where's the simple screenshot with the specs followed up by a picture or 10 second video of him turning it on for proof. This is so lame

This is definitely a mistake. The Margins on the Mac Minis are VERY SMALL. I recently bought a MacMini Solo, a nano and a MacBook Pro from my campus store. Compared to retail the nano was $30 cheaper, the MacBook was $300 cheaper, while the mini was $20 cheaper. That tells that the margin on the mini is pretty small. Definitely wont see a larger HD and superdrive.

Wait how could this be a simple mistake? How ofter does one get a "free" upgrade in hd, processor and optical drive? Unless he found a loophole I doubt Apple or where even he purchased it from would do that. Now it is more belivevable if apple upgrade the MacMini.

Easy. Someone did a BTO with these specs, and that BTO mini ended up in this guy's core solo mini box. Someone at the factory screwed up, and now some poor guy who ordered the BTO Mac has the low end Mini and is probably pretty pissed right now.

I totally agree with that however I really do think the days of the Mac Mini Core Solo models are very limited. There aren't too many Solos around because the cost is very similar to same clocked Duos and Solo are being taken off the Intel production line (because of the poor sales).

In light of today's refresh, I guess it wasn't fake, huh?

Yes, it was. (Or, at best, a boo-boo on Apple's part.)

The refreshed $599 mini STILL doesn't have a SuperDrive or a 100 GB hard drive. It definitely looks like the OP got someone else's BTO high-end mini instead of the BTO low-end mini he actually ordered.

And... Apple doesn't even offer a 100 GB drive on the current lineup of minis. Only 60 (stock on the $599 model,) 80 (stock on the $799 model, optional on the $599 model,) 120 and 160. So even if he accidentally received a revised mini early, it would have still had a 60 GB hard drive and a Combo drive. (The $599 model doesn't even have a SuperDrive as an option.)
