@Mikael H & @throAU thank you both for your info. It's been very helpful.

I will figure out a way to get my NAS to back up automatically to Amazon Glacier or some cloud service, I already use glacier to store diagnostic data for some of my iOS apps so it should be pretty easy to write a small script to do it. Then if my house burns down or some EMP device is detonated in my city, I won't lose all of my beloved cat gifs and everything else on my computer :)

I was just messing.:D
is this not a great use case for forums? Rather than the endless debates/arguing that appears to be much more common/prevalent in 98% of the threads.

I've started using BitTorrent Sync to keep my Xcode project folders synchronized between my NAS and my computer, in addition to Time Machine backups (which happens hourly but aren't exactly instantaneous like BitTorrent Sync). My computer's logic board died a few weeks ago, and while I push to git regularly, I still lost a few hours of work. So now that shouldn't happen again. It's also automatically backing up the NAS to Amazon Glacier in the cloud.

Careful with that....

...Stalin didn't like debates or free discussion either, and look at what happened to him ;)
