I just placed an order for 2 x 16GB kit at Crucial:

CT3650282 16GB kit (8GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM Upgrade for a Apple iMac 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 (27-inch, Late 2012) System for $163.98 before tax or shipping.

Is there really a difference between the one above and this one:
CT3650258 16GB kit (8GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM
shop for more iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) DDR3 upgrades $ 81.99ea. Quantity should be numeric $ 163.98

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had the 0282 ready to order and then the Crucial people told me to get the one ending in 0258, -- does anyone know the difference.

. . . so you've ordered the iMac with the i7 Quad-core 3.4GHz processor and Crucial instructed you to change your memory order?

That would be bizarre as I used the Crucial Adviser Tool for my order. I tried to call and speak with Crucial but their CSR phone system was a steaming pile of fail--ten minutes before their hours closed.

I did order the imac with the i7 - and yes they suggested I order the one that I noted above. Very strange as the advisor tool said the other one, but then I had emailed to ask some other questions (return policy etc and asked if I picked the right one) and they sent the link for the other one).

I will probably call to ask...as I think both are compaticle.

Curious indeed.

I hammered the Adviser Tool several times, 3.4GHz i7, 27" iMac, late 2012 and every single time it came up with the p/n CT3650282, even using the adviser from the memory page you linked.

Hmm

I ordered the new 27" iMac on Nov. 30 with 32 GB of Apple RAM. Yes, it's costing me an extra $400 but if there are any problems with the computer, it will be worth it to simply let Apple fix it.

I have had Macs since 1990 - Desktops, laptops, lots of them. Mostly they've been rock solid reliable machines, but there have been one or two with problems that may have had to do with the RAM.

RAM problems can be notoriously hard to diagnose. I found this out from the many technicians who came to my office to fix one of the Mac Pros that had problems. A problematic RAM stick will work in one slot and not another. It will sometimes work and then not. Is it the RAM or the RAM slot that has a problem? Believe me, RAM problems do not always show up in the computer's diagnostics, it can be a long frustrating process to try to find the problem. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10328514-263.html

I used to buy my RAM online. Crucial and TransIntl are two of the best providers. They all offer a lifetime replacement on their RAM, and you can save several hundred dollars by purchasing through them. Don't go for the cheapest, go for the best. And be sure you are buying the correct RAM for your computer.

Is this the best RAM to get for a 27" iMac? I don't care about price, just that it is the best.

2 sets of 2x8gb from Crucial?:

First, the RAM you link is the same memory that the Memory Adviser Tool brought me to when I ordered mine (27", 2.4GHz, late 2012).

Second, memory is memory. The timing settings are where one memory spec may be faster than another memory spec with slower timings.

Just like hard disk drives, I've seen many different flavors (Crucial included) of memory fail and require replacement.

Working memory is the best. Failed memory is the worst. :D

Extra $600 ill take my chances with Crucial.

Same here. While Apple may appreciate the extra $420 that is the delta between their upgrade and the cost of the user DIY upgrade . . . . . and in the end, what's the difference?

Oh, right! The Apple memory is warranteed under the iMac warranty, the Crucial memory is warranteed . . . . wait for it . . . . for FOREVER. :D

Good to know, thanks. Luckily, I was able to cancel my Amazon order pretty easily, so no harm/no foul.

Good! Amazon has awesome customer service anyway. Just use that chart and you should be fine! All of the rest of the specs looked right.

They once replaced an expensive pair of running shoes that UPS had "misplaced" on their dime. They've more than earned the Prime account I have through there.

Ended up going with:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008LTBJFW/ref=ox_ya_os_product

Ordered 2 sets to upgrade to 32GB.

To do the same thing, Apple wanted an extra $600 to replaced the two 4GB it came with an upgrade to a full 32GB. I'll go ahead and do it myself for 25% of that price.

Thanks for your help!

Does New EGG ever run "After Christmas, or New Year Sales"? Just wondering when the best time to buy is. 8GB will surely get me by for a week or two:)

Fyi called and asked and the person this time also came up with the CT3650282 - the one we are all coming up with.

She was not sure why the person emailed me the other one.

Ordered! finally that is done..
