"Hungarian news sites say that banks are being slammed with requests for help, and that it appears to be a problem on Apple's end."

How so? This sounds like some bank hack to me. And why only Hungary? If this is Apple facing why not the rest of Europe.

Some users in this thread have already mentioned experiencing the same issue in another country.

A good example of “don’t rely on 3rd party payment mechanisms”. Things can go wrong already with your 1st party bank…

Then how do you manage to fit it all into Apple’s free 5GB? My iPhone backup alone is 4GB, iPad is just under 800MB. Kind of tight space nowadays, unless you regularly offload stuff elsewhere.
As you can see, it's enough:

I also have 1TB Onedrive from Office 365 and GoogleDrive, so plenty of room available.
For managing all that stuff - including file transfer to/from Windows - i use Documents from Readdle.

Hungarian here.

This issue is absolutely not related to Apple Pay in any way. The initial reporting was done by local journalists who don't know the difference between Apple Pay and the iTunes/App Store ecosystem. MacRumors should know better.

What actually happened is that some users (including myself) received random charges on the card linked to their Apple Account used for App Store purchases, Music or TV+ subscriptions, etc. In my case, this credit card is not even added to Apple Pay.
kösz

my apple account and subscriptions are still in USD and App Store region has not been changed to Hungary so I guess I'm safe.

I think that in order for a transaction to go through without authorisation by a user the card needs to be pre-authorised, charging a 0€,£ or $ on your card first. So it looks like either a genuine system bug charging people random amounts, or somebody has found a way of misusing these card security tokens. Serious stuff either way.
Stealing these tokens from apple is way more serious than a "simple" glitch with the payment processing.

Every country has a different store. It's more plausible that there is a problem at Apple's end instead of thinking that dozens of banks are hacked in Hungary plus Revolut, but they only charge their Hungarian clients.

I started getting charges yesterday on my wise card, I froze the card immediately, and contacted wise and apple. Apple said they didn't see any transactions on their end, but since they got so many reports they are investigating. Wise said, since I previously used my card at apple they don't see it as fraudulent, and I should contact apple first. Then today, I got yet another charge on my already frozen wise card. Unbelievable! Now apple and wise are playing ping-pong again with my money.

I don't know if this is related, but on June 20th and 21st a total of 11 charges (between CHF 30 and CHF 60) for "digital goods" were made to the card on my Apple Pay account which don't appear on the Apple purchase history, only on my credit card bill. I cancelled the card now.
CHF. Is that Swiss?

If they don't appear in Apple's purchase history then it means the card was used outside of the Apple Pay mechanism.

As the actual issue seems to be nothing to do with Apple Pay anyway, and more an issue with App Store subscriptions being taken in error, I would guess your issues are elsewhere.

Just checked my purchase history and my bank account. I luckily haven't been ripped off.

I have a similar issue. An unrecognized charge on my Apple Wallet (iphone & ipad), but not showing up in my card issuer (AMEX Germany). The “purchase” was done in Brazil where I am at the moment. I talked to Apple and they couldn’t tell me where this notification came from. I thought Apple engineers were more competent. Disclaimer: I haven’t used the credit card (apple pay) in Brazil.

Or it is just a bug or exploit it doesn't mean that it is not Apple fault, weirdly no other provider have this problem atm.

I agree with you and believe that you're right.
I like how people on this site were: "I don't need that customisation that Android has. It's like for children. Why would I want to customise my Home Screen and Lock Screen?" and now everybody's excited about it because it's coming in iOS 18.

I'm not excited for customisation at all.

I want iPhones and iPads to be uniform and simple devices for the end-user.
