My MacBook Pro mid 2009 has just started having random kernel panics where it just reboots and tells me that there was a kernel panic. It has even done it whilst asleep.

The system log is always the same so I am posting it here hoping that it means something to someone and they can interpret it for me!

A couple of things....Parallels may be your culprit, but RAM could also be an issue....if you pull a stick at a time, you should be able to identify the bad one if there is a bad stick.

A permissions check and repair followed by an SMC reset may also help:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1452

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

Sorry, I should have put things I have tried so far, they are:

Permissions - repair
Disc - Verify and repair
Clean out dust from internals
Remove and reseat RAM sticks. (I did both at the same time, I shall try one at a time).

I will also do a SMC Reset too.

Thanks

No, it ranges from using Aperture, browsing the web using Safari to leaving it alone whilst it does its back-up via Time Machine.

Check your RAM usage. Does it go above a certain number when the Panic happens? Do apps all of the sudden start consuming CPU resources? Does any process starts that requires something specific when the panic happens? Do you have a load on the GPU?

We can't just assume RAM from the get go.

I rarely manage to use all my RAM. So I have launched 15 applications including iTunes, Safari and Aperture, then launched 30+ tabs in Safari and scrolled through my 20,000+ Aperture pictures randomly to try and use more RAM. I managed to get to go as low as around 1G free RAM out of the 8G but it behaved impeccably!

I have seen it Panic when both CPUs were idling. It has also panicked when using either the 9400M or the 9600m GT graphics card.

The only thought that has just occurred to me is that I recently travelled abroad with my laptop, do you think the airport X-Ray scanner could have damaged something?

Hardly, Airport scanner don't do squat to damage components. Still under AppleCare? I doubt this since you mention you have the 9600 GT. Never hurts to ask tho.

This issue could well be the chipset failing.

Turn off Time Machine, and let us know if your problem is fixed. I'm thinking this could be a file system issue.

I have uninstalled Parallels as I was told this could cause these issues.

Still Kernel Panicked, same error:

Yup, turns out my Time Machine back-up had become corrupt. Turning off Time Machine and unmounting my Time Machine back-up has stopped the kernel panics. :)

Tried rebuilding my back-up with disk utility but it says it is damaged beyond repair. :(

Then it had nothing to do with RAM. Goes to show you cant always blame RAM for everything.

Was getting the same error when ever I tried to let back up proceed to a NAS DROBO. Other TM drives did not cause the problem. Lost WEEKS trying to find this problem but I think THIS is the solution. Now doing a new back up on my Drobo TM from scratch. Beyond me why a TM corruption would cause a panic.

Was getting this: hfs_UNswap_BTNode: invalid backward link (0x00026082.......
