I do. It bothers me. Every time I send or get a text message at the end of the tone I hear a little rattle noise.

I'm working on a fix for this as soon as I get my iPhone 4 toolkit either today or tomorrow.

Tool kit? Where do you get that?

I don't want to take mine apart. If this isn't happening to everyone's I might as well take it to Apple. I gotta try my sister's tomorrow.

Mine also only rattles when it's on ring and not vibrate, so it's gotta be something with the speaker? The camera rattles when you tap it, but I don't know if that's what is happening when I send/get messages.

Just to chime in, I too have heard this rattle noise since the day I got my iPhone 4, and I haven't had any problems with the camera nor the sleep/wake button.

When I get my 4S (friday) I'll test it on that too, but this seems like a non-issue.

Yup, just noticed that mine has started to rattle when i tap it towards the top nearer the camera. Kinda annoying. But I'm relieved that it's not just mine.

I have the same issue with my 4S, although mine sounds like a piece of sand rolling around on the inside. If I hold all the buttons and shake the phone, there is a distinct "rattle" inside.

Called Apple and had a new one shipped out. The new phone has no rattle at all.

NO, its not the buttons, the 4S has tighter buttons then all the other phones have had, and they do not shake/move at all.

2/2 white 4S iPhones in this household have this rattle. One is 16GB and the other is 32GB.

I called and Apple offered to ship me a new one for a $25 (can't remember the EXACT number) service charge. I opted to schedule an appointment for the Apple store as it is very close to me.

Not 100% hopeful this noise will go away but mine is pretty annoying and maybe another one will have a bit less rattling if possible. Or it could be absent as others have reported...that would be nice.

Glad mine rattles. If it didn't I would return it for one that did. It is the free floating auto focus element that moves freely. An electric current is applied to move it in and out for focus. If it really bugs you take the phone apart and drop some glue in the mechanism so the lens doesn't move freely. Your pics will be out of focus. (sarcasm). If the noise comes from somewhere else besides the camera maybe something fell in the phone while it was being assembled.

Forgot to add my Canon 70-200 f4 IS lens rattles when I move it to. Turns out its the Image stabilization element in the lens. Again it is free floating element with a magnetic coil that moves etc when a current is applied.

I too have this rattle. It's pretty loud when lightly tapping or putting the phone on a desk. Anyway, after much research, I can confirm mine is the camera autofocus. A good way to test is this:

1) Open the camera app and focus on something in the distance.
2) Tap the back of the phone near the camera - rattles, right?
3) Hold the phone up pretty close to something and let it focus.
4) Tap the phone again - the rattle is gone/quieter?

Yes it was much tighter when focused and locked onto a close object. Wish it would stay that way when exiting the camera.

If it does keep bothering me I might swap cause it does seem that each phone has a different degree of rattle. Having a case would also probably help me cause then I'd be tapping on the case and not the back

It seemed to rattle plenty through my Defender case. I took the case off thinking it was being caused by the case initially.

I've got the rattle. It's definitely the camera apparatus that rattles, but I only hear it if I tap the phone near the camera. For me, it's certainly not something to worry about and I'm pretty sure it's normal. My iPhone 4 had the exact same thing.

I remember I had this rattle in my 4, I could literally shake the phone and it would rattle like a kid's toy.

Not the case in my 4S.

Mine did the same thing. I made an appointment at the Genius Bar and they replaced my phone on the spot. Didn't even inspect the problem. They must see this a lot.

To follow up on my original post, my white 16GB iPhone 4S does not rattle when I shake it...I'm not sure what that means, but I've taken a few pictures with this thing and they're amazing so no harm I guess.
