Nice! I'm envious. :)

Do check again a few times over a few days, though, cos mine doesn't do it all the time.

why would I bother to shake a cold macbook manically on the off chance every now and then i hear a rattle?? I haven't noticed it when i tried after seeing this, its working perfectly, why bother? Its almost like some people on here are actively looking for problems with a microscope!

Easy to say when you don't actually have the problem yourself. For those who do, however, it's a bit annoying.

but you're ACTIVELY looking for it..

hear me out...you're asking for people to shake their MacBooks on a specific axis, in specific conditions, to hear a sound that MAY appear SOME of the time....just use your bloody computer?!

Oh, sorry - I should have made it clear in the title: this is a discussion... in a discussion forum. You're perfectly at liberty to leave whenever you like.

Not to throw fuel on the fire. But I would bet that no users on this thread unboxed their rMB and began shaking it violently to inspect for rattles.

My experience was that I noticed it in casual/normal use, like repositioning the notebook on my lap, etc

I think users here have just been trying to outline how to recreate the rattle

Yes, I'm not "violently" shaking my laptop either – just tousling from side to side. I honestly did not notice this either until I read this thread, but now it is apparent to me. I also do not go "looking for faults under a microscope" either. I am disappointed that Apple does not catch these things before launch of a new product.

I guess this is normal. I only hear the rattle when I shake the rMB excessively.

Yeah, same here much of the time. Sometimes, though, I can hear it 'clunk' just by tilting it. Doesn't affect the operation of the thing, though, so no biggie.

It bugged me that my "rattle" was so pronounced, so I took it into the Apple Store to get checked out. I also mentioned in the case notes that the battery should be checked as well. The MacBook was returned – they replaced the battery (whole lower case) and replaced the screen (it must have been damaged during replacement). When I got it back, I noticed the "rattle" was even more pronounced than the first time, so it got sent back. I picked it up today and they fixed the "rattle" – now it's completely gone. This time they ended up replacing the screen again because they believed it was the hinge that was causing all of the loose rattle noise.

Interesting. Give it a few days to be sure it doesn't come back, cos mine's come and gone a few times, like I mentioned earlier. If it has indeed been sorted, though, I might well do the same thing…

My MacBook previous to this one was very pronounced and annoying. This one has no sign so far. If it comes back and is subtle, I can live with that.

They said it was the hinge of the display and they cannot replace just the hinge itself, so they usually end up replacing the whole display. That can be risky if you already like your display. I think that is why they replaced my display the first go-round.

^ I would **Not** play screen lottery.

I more than live with imperfections on my rMB and 6+ for these reasons, my screens are gems.

I've seen some UGGGGGLY ones to the discerning eye :(

You are absolutely right, it is a gamble. The good thing is that the repair was done at Apple's Repair Depot in Houston, Texas and not on the assembly line in China by a 15 year old. This way, it is carefully repaired and inspected under better conditions.

By the way, it was the display hinge that causes the rattle, not the battery. I guess they cannot replace just the hinge itself because the display and hinge are one unit.

It has been a week since my MacBook's rattle was repaired. I only detect the smallest amount of movement in the display's hinge area only when the Macbook gets a bit overheated and when I have many applications open at once. After it cools down, if you move it around side-to-side, you hear nothing at all.

Overall, huge improvement compared to when I first noticed the rattle. Before the repair, you could move the MacBook side-to-side warm or cold and the rattle was very pronounced.

Ah, okay, so it's definitely the hinge, then. That's good to know.

I thought about doing the same with mine, but stopped reading how to replicate it :) so far have not heard a rattle, and will pretend it's not there....

Though agree that all models will have this rattle.

It’s only been a week since the repair. I will continue to test and report my findings. Since this is the first generation of this MacBook, I guess anomalies are expected. I’m also glad I purchased AppleCare, so everything is covered for 3 years.

I still wouldn't be certain the screen is going to be as nice as your previous one.

I have no faith in QC
