iMessage is equally terrible, so why not RCS?

iMessage is end-to-end encrypted in both individual and group chats. RCS is only end-to-end encrypted for individual chats, and only if both people are using the stock Google Messages app (not other messaging apps like Samsung’s, which will only be encrypted in transit).

Telegram is free and available on all major platforms. I'd gladly be locked into Telegram or other major communications platform over a phone carrier any day.

RCS is only available on certain platforms and requires $$$.

Yes, your cell phone requires you to have a carrier.

In the UK at least you can port your number, and to use a cellphone you really should need a service provider, otherwise even iMessage won't work. Having a home address is being locked in by your logic.

If you did not have a carrier then you cannot make a phone call. What's your point? It is the replacement to basic SMS text messaging...

I still fail to see how RCS is locked-in, you can switch to another carrier and it'll work. Just like Telegram. The carrier is nominally a dumb pipe for sending the packets where they need to go.

By your own logic, having to pay for access to a service, Telegram is still locked in to a carrier since you need a phone number and data plan to use it.
