Got my 2.2 MBP this week, and installed iStat. What seems really strange to me is that the GPU diode(66C) and the GPU heatsink(51C) temperatures difference is 15C. The only possible reason i see is the bad thermal paste connection between those. On the other hand, the CPU and CPU heatsink temperatures are the same - 52-53C.
I believe that GPU should produce a lot of heat, but these numbers seem to be abnormal.
Comments are appreciated.
At the moment my GPU heatsink is about 48°C, the GPU itself 44°C. Mind that these temperature readings aren't very accurate. In my case, most likely the heatsink read-out is slightly too high and the GPU readout is slightly too low...I've always wondered the same thing. Right now my GPU heatsink says 45c and the GPU diode says 59c

No. I wouldn't arbitrarily open your MBP just to 'see'. I knew than mine was an issue, I mean, 60c temps while surfing is a bit much. You can post your temps and we can see if they are out of the ordinary or not. I have read a lot of reports of users replacing the thermal paste and seeing zero difference, keep that in mind too.I have posted this a few times and no one replies, so I am hoping to get a heads up this time. I like my MBP and have no problem pulling it apart, but I am worried about going to the level that it requires to reapply the thermal paste. Is there a company out there that will reapply the paste? I would gladly pay to have it done or even certain mac individuals that will do it? Thanks in advance.
Can you show me that in Celsius? The machine should never shutdown due to heat, if it does that is a huge problem and I would take it back to Apple. Here are my temps. Only thing running right now is Mail iCal, and Safari. The temps are with a USB cooler under it on some beefed up rubber pads to hold it about 1/4 inch away from the cooler.
I was doing a movie in Handbrake one day and the MBP actually shut down on me cause it got too hot. That really aggravated me.
How did you remove all that thermal paste??![]()
That's even lower than my temperatures, and CPU load is pretty much zero here. But my MBP has never shut down automatically, not even while playing games that make all fans run at full throttle...Here are my temps. Only thing running right now is Mail iCal, and Safari. Very interesting, looking at the pictures is the processor soldered in?
It doesn't look like it is. Therefore if you had a Santa Rosa MBP would you be able to go out and buy a Penryn mobile processor and drop it it?
I'm replacing the bottom casing of my MBP when the new casing arrives. Do you think it's worth applying my own thermal paste when it comes to rebuilding the MBP into the new case?
If you want to. Give it a shot and show us some pictures (before and after).
Still a no go. Tried to burn the movie again and the temps shot up to over 200F (94C). That is pretty close to the shut down range, so I just shut the program down. Oh well.
No. You have to completely remove the motherboard from the machine... the chips are on the bottom side of the board. Are the chips easy to get to? I'll order some Arctic Silver thermal paste ready for the job![]()
Seems to me you have a fan issue as opposed to a paste issue. The fans should kick on HIGH at about 80C or so and stay that way. Do your fans do this?Still a no go.
