That's an interesting thought.
However, you do need to remember that you can just double click the home button, which is enough for most users.
Also, we don't know what kind of headphones Apple will be bundling with the iPod Touch. It's possible they might bundle the headphones with a mic (Perhaps voice chat on some online games), which would mean that there's also a button, which would enable you to play/pause and change tracks.
I would like to welcome you to the forums. I hope you enjoy your stay!

Yeah, I know about the double-clicking of the home button, but I was trying to avoid taking the iPod out of my pocket, or from out of sight in general. Again, it's not a big complaint, but rather a small convenience. Though, if they do bundle some of the earphones you mentioned, it might just be enough.

Also, I've been registered here for over a year, so I've been here a little while. I'm more of a browser/searcher/lurker in the shadows for the most part, but thanks for the welcome anyways.;)

Results

It heavily pains me to do this since I am VERY disappointed in today's announcements, but for kicks I figured I'd publish the results of my initial predictions that I started the thread with.

Plastic Backing: No
Correct

64 GB: Yes
Correct

Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating: Yes
Wrong - Its the least apple could have done considering they didn't update much else, but oh well add it to the list of things they should have added but didn't.

Camera: Yes
Wrong - This really just puzzles me to no end. I know rumors are just that, and I understand people who say that due to the fact the "new" models are available pretty much right away, Apple was planning this all along. And if those people are right, then shame on Apple. The fact that the Nano got a camera is completely puzzling and it makes zero sense why the Touch didn't get one. It makes me think that there was a production issue.

GPS: No
Correct

Microphone: Yes
Correct - The 32 and 64 GB models come with headphones that have a mic on them.

3G: No
Correct

Thinner: Yes
Wrong - It's the same size.

Better battery life, faster performance: Yes
Half Correct - The battery doesn't seem to be a whole lot different, to my amazement. The 32 and 64 GB models however have the updated graphics and processing of the iPhone 3GS.

Compass: No
Correct

Voice Control: Yes
Correct -Again, on the 32 and 64 GB models.

Front-facing camera: No
Correct

Better speaker: Yes
Assumed Wrong - No mention was made of the speaker, so I can't say for sure if it's the same one or not. But the way Apple is going with this update, I'll assume I'm wrong.

AM/FM Tuner: No
Correct - Though to my utter surprise, it was included on the Nano.

Aluminum unibody design: No
Correct

So overall quite a pathetic update. The Nano got the video and mic and the Touch didn't, and that alone has me completely confused. Aside from the bump to 64 GB and the updated processing speed, this is quite a mediocre update, if you can even call it that.
