I would be very happy with this setup and pricing, though I don't think the price points will be like this, especially the higher end models. The entry model has the greatest chance of a price change, but again I kind of doubt it. To me it seems all but certain that there will be the camera/video/mic with 16GB base model. Anything else they add on at that point will just be extra goodies (GPS, compass (still quite likely), etc). The prices won't change much if at all.

Oleophobic screens...

This really doesn't seem to be a huge deal to me because most people try to cover their screens anyways (at least if they're OCD like me). Though it makes sense for them to do it as they already have them on the 3GS.

Realistic expectations would be...

3GS Camera with video, if not, video to be activated in future firmware update.

Built-In Mic, seems only right if it had a video camera, why not?

64GB, obvious.

GPS, I don't think so, I don't see GPS on an iPod touch this year.

Possible plastic backing like iPhone, the camera will probably be moved to the iPhone's position, as the video leak of the 3rd gen touch was a prototype and not exactly the final product.

3GS Processor (or better), it may get the 3GS hardware, which I think is more than enough, a better processor would be a plus.

Better battery life, it's a ritual for Apple.

the price points will probably be a bit higher with 64 gb. more like 350 to 400. C'mon. its apple we're talking about here. not dell. i say 16gb for 199,32 gb for 299, 64 for 400.

Ha, no. Apple's ritual is claiming betting battery life.

My prediction:
-The 600MHz processor found in the 3GS
-256MB of RAM
-The 3 megapixel camera found on the 3GS with video and a microphone
-Voice Control
-Will use the headphones that come with the 3GS
-Oleophobic screen coating
-Bluetooth 2.1
-Improved speaker quality
-$199 for 16GB
-$299 for 32GB
-$399 for 64GB

Now, I think there might actually be an OLED display on the device, and if there is it will probably be $299 for 16GB, matching the Zune HD's price. Since the iPod Touch had the faster processor and Nike+ built-in before the iPhone, I think it's possible for the iPod Touch to get an OLED display before the iPhone.

remember those losers last year (before 2g) who told people to get an iphone if they wanted extra features like mic?
alot of them got owned when 2g was released (i really wonder how they felt ; )

i'm sure these same peoples today will be 2 about gps & ect

i think this new itouch will be faster than iphone b/c itouch is meant for mutlimedia, to attract gamers as apple wants to profit from video games

also why no one mention multi tasking?

GPS unlikely

Hi All. GPS on the iPhone is critically dependent on the phone itself, as the maps are loaded dynamically. While one could do this using the wireless, it would be useless when you were out of the wireless zone - e.g., while traveling. I would take it off of your wish list, so that you won't be too disappointed.

Apple likes to make announcements about media contracts, pricing, etc... at these events. They have recently demo'd a very high performance http streaming technology that could eat Flash's dinner (check out http://iphone.akamai.com.

Wall street will be looking for broadened applications. Those guys continue to worry that the iPod market will be saturated any day.

While what you say is true about loading maps on the go, it isn't the only way. What Apple could do to counteract this problem with the iPod's lack of a constant data connection would be to offer map packages or bundles that could be purchased from iTunes and loaded up onto the iPod. Apple, as you say, likes to announce media contracts with partnered corporations, what better announcement than a contract with Google to sell bundled packages of their Maps on iTunes? This would also come in handy with iPhone users who want to use GPS in a remote location where cell reception is spotty at best. GPS would also be handy in the new iPod to geo-tag photos with the new camera, for use in iPhoto. I know GPS in the new iPod is wishful thinking, but there are points to make where it would just make sense. Would Apple really release a camera-equipped device if it can't be compatible with one of the major features in their new iPhoto program? Maybe not.

I'll be at work on the 9th, only able to read web sites.
Where can I read the latest announcements on the 9th?

I've been holding off on purchasing an iTouch for my teenage daughter, but I plan to take the plunge when the new model comes out. The biggest thing for me is the rumored camera, built-in mic, and higher storage capacity at or below the current prices for iTouchs. Reading through this thread, it's apparent to me that no one really knows for sure what to expect but that several (most?) are banking on the things I mentioned as being all but certain.

My question now would be, where should I buy this for her? Is there an advantage to buying directly at an Apple store? Don't places like Wal-Mart and Target sell them not only for a few dollars less (not much, but a little) but also "throw in" iTunes cards or something else?

Oh yeah, another question is - if I have unused iTunes gift cards, are those only good for apps/music/video/etc in the iTunes store or can I apply them toward the cost of the iTouch (if I went to my local Apple store to make the purchase)?

Thanks - 3 more days!!

Buy the iPod at the place offering the best deal for you.

iTunes gift cards are for iTunes purchases, they cannot be put towards anything else.

Hmmm. Apple has done very well keeping everything secret. Besides the case leaks. The camera is a guess right now.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this before, but does anyone think there is a chance that there will be track buttons added (similar to the volume buttons). Maybe on the opposite side or below the volume buttons?

I'm sure there are a plethora people, including me, who find it a little annoying having to unlock the screen simply to change the track on the current album/playlist that is playing.

It's a small hardware tweak and wouldn't take away much from the "simplicity" of having few mechanical buttons, but I think it would go over well. It's one of the only complaints I've had since I've transfered from my regular iPod years ago.

That's an interesting thought.
However, you do need to remember that you can just double click the home button, which is enough for most users.
Also, we don't know what kind of headphones Apple will be bundling with the iPod Touch. It's possible they might bundle the headphones with a mic (Perhaps voice chat on some online games), which would mean that there's also a button, which would enable you to play/pause and change tracks.
I would like to welcome you to the forums. I hope you enjoy your stay!

I certainly can't wait for this update.
I resisted temptation with the 2g, but I'm definitely interested in the 3g, especially since my first gen touch has a messed up headphone jack. And I desperately need the 64GB!

I really hope these last minute rumors about a possible delay in production are false, already got rid of my first gen.

Same here, I've put off buying a 2g touch since July for this, and waiting longer when it's this close will suck

I've seen a lot of threads with people wanting tons of things for the new iPod. Although it is all speculation, and your guess is as good as mine, I'm trying to be realistic as to what the new Touch will have, based on Apple's history.

Plastic Backing: No
We all hate the metal backing of the iPod, but I don't expect that to change. It has been the backing of all of Apple's highest end iPods, and there seems to be no reason to change it. I think Apple likes the fact that it scratches so easily, it makes people want to buy new ones every year. Although there's no doubt a plastic backing would be welcome by many, I don't think it will happen.

64 GB: Yes
Seems logical. I don't think that Apple likes having the same maximum capacity on both the iPhone and the iPod Touch. The iPod is meant to be a media device more so than the iPhone, so it's only logical that the highest end model have more capacity. I would expect 16, 32, and 64 gig models replacing the current lineup and the same price points.

Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating: Yes
Apple quietly put this on the iPhone 3GS, meaning it's not a huge deal. Apple usually likes to play up even minor additions (i.e. MMS and Video Recording). So the fact they didn't play this up tells me its rather simple and I expect it to reach the iPod, also quietly.

Camera: Yes
Call me crazy, but I think this is going to happen. One reason was an Apple job listing looking for people to work on cameras for the iPod. The second reason is logical. Apple's 2G Touch was a very incremental update. It changed its appearance slightly, added a volume rocker, a speaker, and several other small changes. This was a very small upgrade, and Apple is not usually known to do 2 minor upgrades on iPods back-to-back. I think many people resisted the temptation to upgrade from 1G to 2G, and Apple needs to do something big to the iPod to get people to upgrade. So even though it's a toss up, I'm predicting it will have the same camera as the iPhone with video recording. It's the slam dunk new feature that Apple could use to drive sales of the device.

GPS: No
Would love to have it, but I just have a gut feeling you won't see it on this iPod. Can't explain it, just don't think it will happen.

Microphone: Yes
The inclusion of the Voice Memos application on the iPod Touch 3.0 software sealed the deal on this for me. It makes no sense to have a non removable app like that on the Touch if very few of its owners can use it. Out of the box, every iPod user should be able to use every Apple application, including Voice Memos. Although, I'm not necessarily saying the microphone will be on the device. In fact I think it's more likely the microphone will be on the headphones, similar to the iPhone's headphones. Just expect there to be a microphone somewhere inside the Touch's packaging.

3G: No
I don't know why anyone thinks this is possible. The iPod is not a cell phone.

Thinner: Yes
But only slightly. Ever so slightly. Likely unnoticeable.

Better battery life, faster performance: Yes
This is a given, every Apple product is always more battery efficient and faster than the previous model. It will be interesting though to see just how much better they get. The battery will likely only get incrementally better, but the faster performance is a tough one. It will definitely be faster, but whether it is incremental like the 2G Touch, or considerably faster like the iPhone 3GS, remains to be seen. I'm leaning more towards 3GS.

Compass: No
I think the average person is only going to use the compass on the 3GS to aid in using the GPS. Since the iPod won't have GPS (in my opinion), the compass is almost useless.

Voice Control: Yes
This makes sense. Since I believe a microphone will be included with every device, it's logical to include this feature.

Front-facing camera: No
This will never happen on any iPod. Apple is all about clean design. Nothing looks worse than a camera protruding out on the front of the device. It's ugly and I don't think Apple believes enough people would use the feature to warrant its inclusion.

Better speaker: Yes
The speaker on the 2G Touch is lackluster. Better speakers exist for the iPhone. Expect an upgrade, even though it likely won't be heavily advertised.

AM/FM Tuner: No
People have wanted this forever, and it will never happen. Never has, never will. Even more so now that there are apps that let you listen to radio over the internet.

Aluminum unibody design: No
While I could potentially see this in the future, you won't see it on the 3G Touch. I expect the Touch's physical design to remain very similar to the 2G model. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if it's identical (aside from the camera on the back).

So that's all I could think of, if I come up with more I'll update the thread. I think that the biggest new feature of the device will be a camera, and that will be Apple's biggest selling point. They can not do another incremental update to this device, and the only plausible huge feature they can add is a camera, so I think they're going to do it. A lot of people don't think they will, but two years ago we didn't think an iPod would ever have internet and look at the device now. We can't imagine it without it. So in my opinion, look for the new iPod Touch this September to include a camera, as well as the other features I described above.

I think it should have GPS whats the point of the map on the ipod touch? you can use it only when u have internet which is most likely your home i would really love a gps on the ipod touch 3G.

I don't see why only one person has speculated on the possibility of wireless N. It wasn't even speculation, but the possibility that the chip they may use includes the ability. I really think wireless N would be beneficial to uploading videos to your mac for editing or video streaming to your TV like an Apple TV. I'd personally like it for home use because I find less interference on the 5 GHz band. Of course, wireless syncing has always been a dream of iPod users. This is just one step closer.

As for the GPS, I really like the idea of incorporating it for the sole use of GeoTagging. When the feature was announced in iPhoto '09, I was flabbergasted that it even existed. It makes sense, but I asked myself "who has a camera with GPS in it?" It really makes sense now that so many cases have been reported to have a camera.

The digital compass is high on my list for the sole use of gaming/movement sensing. It'd be great for increasing accuracy and giving new dimensions to user input.

A microphone would be essential for video recording. Makes sense for the camera, but I'm not sure it would be good for voip. With the internal speaker, though a speaker phone would be alright and a private conversation could be had with the mic-on-headphones.

Front facing camera.. Why not use a lower resolution camera for the front facing one? Video chat doesn't need to be high res, and surely lower resolution cameras are cheaper and most likely lower profile. It could easily fit between the glass and backing such as those on the unibody MacBook Pros.

I think GPS would be extremely useful, no doubt. I just don't see it happening. I see a camera, faster processor, and a capacity increase. If GPS were released, I would actually be excited.

As long as they release a 64gb model with a faster processor, I will be happy. A camera would be great. Really don't care too much about GPS.

Hasn't been talked about much in this thread, but there are also rumors that iTunes v9 could be released at this event too. Possibly including some social networking integration (facebook/twitter/last.fm) and a new way to organize apps on the ipod (which is long over due). I'd love to be able to put apps in folders.
