There has to be the new iPhone glass on front and back. FaceTime only works over Wifi, so why shouldn't there be video conferencing on this wifi only device?

A lot of people are saying if they did that it'd reduce iPhone sales, but that's just nonsense. The iPod Touch is for kids really, students, and they sell tens of millions to kids.

While I'm generally not good at predictions there is one thing I can predict with almost certainty: You are going to be disappointed. The iPhone4 is a $700 device (unsubsidized). Yet most here think the Touch will have almost every feature the iPhone has, plus twice the flash memory, for $399. I don't see that.

My guess: A4, gyroscope, one camera (probably the rear facing 3 Megapixel 3GS camera + 3GS editing software), better battery life. The $199 model will be the current third generation model with 8 or 16 GB of memory.

Currently Apple can't produce enough Retina displays to cover all the people who want iPhones. And while FaceTime is neat, and I am sure Apple would like as many people as possible using it, they are never in a hurry. Apple can afford to wait, refine FaceTime, and use it as next year's feature.

Curious why everyone is saying 'one camera'

I would think Mr. Jobs' comment about 'Facetime devices' in the keynote would indicate that more than the iPhone would be capable of doing this and they have a plan to roll it out across the product line(s) of both iDevices and Mac devices.

I mean the Laptops & Displays of the Macs have built in web cams that are about the same size as the iPhone 4 front facing camera. The iPod touch and iPad are the only two i devices that don't have it. the iPod Touch is due for a refresh so it would seem logical to expect a front/back camera on it.

I've never owned a touch but I'm looking to get rid of my original iPhone. The good news is I'm getting an iPhone from work and I'm currently debating not upgrading to the 4 for my personal phone because a Touch + Mobile hot spot that I have might do everything I need for my personal stuff while I travel. I already have one iPhone 4 with my wife so my second line doesn't cost me a whole lot (will be like $39 with the family plan thing) so the idea of a facetime iPod Touch 4G is highly appealing as Facetime is what I'm most interested in with the new iPhone 4.

My $0.02.

I think its most likely to have 2 cameras but if it doesnt i think it will have the one on the back.

You definitely have some very good points there. After reading that, I think I agree with you. It would also then compete with the Nintendo DSi.

True but i dont think thatll stop people from buying the DSi, especially cause its cheaper than the ipod touch.

It does make sense if you think about it. It's these little hints and tips they drop everywhere that you have to watch for.

I think if they don't put in a camera, I'm not upgrading. I waited for the "3rd gen" to come out before getting one to see if it had a camera. But at the same time, I'll be pissed if they give the 8gb users the 3rd gen iTouch instead of just upgrading. $199 is a reasonable price for a gaming device, but some people don't need 16gbs of space for apps and music and such.

Camera(s?) and the design are things I'm not to sure on. Apple's got something coming out that could go either way. The iPad's like a over-sized iTouch so I don't see why they won't add a camera. Obviously the sensors working fine.

I guess we'll just have to wait until pre-orders! :)

Same here, but i guess we'll see. I personally will probably use 8gb, but i wont 32gb, so i would like something in between.

They should include a camera, they really should change the backing to something else. Maybe something thats not scratch-prone?

+1

My expectations for the iPod Touch 4G are simply here:

-$199 current iPod Touch 8GB 2G model will be replaced by either a 8GB or 16GB 3G model, with all specs of the current 3G model but with lower capacities and a lower price point.
-Same 32GB and 64GB capacities
-Possible new price points ($179 for 8GB or 16GB, $279 for 32GB, $379 for 64GB)
-iPhone 3GS's 3.2 MP autofocus camera without a flash on 32GB, 64GB models. (VGA video recording)
-3.5" Retina 960x640 LCD Screen on 32GB, 64GB models
-Gyroscope on 32GB, 64GB models
-Same battery life for base model, slightly better battery life on 32GB, 64GB models
-256MB RAM on all models
-Same ARM Cortex-A8 600MHz processor on all models
-Wi-Fi b/g/n on 32GB, 64GB models
-Redesigned design, possible aluminum back, or same mirrored back.
-Released on September 8th, 2010, day after Apple's back to school program ends, as proven last year the event was held the day after that on a Wednesday the day after the program ended, and September 8th is on Wednesday this year.
-Ships with iOS 4

although with the new iOS4 being total crap for 1st and 2nd gen ipods they had better give us something nice so we will make the change without hesitation, i wouldnt buy a new ipod if it doesnt have facetime and the two cameras of the iphone (i know im dreaming/hallucinating). they can spare all the time they want making eenie teenie mini upgrades and people will still avalanche to get "the new one"....nasty.

The back will most likely stay the same, as theyve said before, its still an iPod, so they would most likely keep the classic scratch prone back, and if not, it will probably be like the ipad with an aluminum, rectangular case.
For cameras, it is an absolute must for a video and photo camera on the back. Look at the flip cameras? apple would take over their marketshare. Who would want to buy a 150 dollar 2-4gb flip camera, when for 199 you could get an 8 gb ipod touch with built in wifi uploading/ editing? flip would be dunzo.. As for the front, same screen, it will basically be the same as the 3g but new case and camera...

also, with the increasing sizes of the ios, i think they might discontinue the 8gb, you have like 6.5 gb left after install, and after apps, there is not much room left. Apple will want to sell more apps...

Retina display, one good camera, and the upgraded processor. THat's all I want.

besides that form factor from iphone 4. Sexy.

I like the look of the iPhone 4 too. I think a camera's going to be a definite "yes", it would increase sale A LOT.

It'd be stupid of Apple to leave the 8/16GB users out to dry, by not giving them the 4G. I know I have no need, and most people have no need for more than 16GB. That's for people with movies and such, and if the iPod is a "gaming device" as Steve puts it, it should play music (iPod) and play games (gaming device,) duh, which in total only take up a little less than 8GB. Apps aren't even that big, and you can fit thousands of songs onto 8GB. It's only smart. The only reason they left the 8GB option as a 2G this year is because at the eye of 99% of the WORLD, you can't tell the 2G and 3G apart. Only minor software and inner hardware related changes. As for camera's, the iPod touch is long over due for a back camera, but will they make it a FaceTime device? Highly likely, although realistically, you can expect 2-3MP camera on the back, POSSIBLE flash, and a vga front facing. It will get a design change cause we've seen the contour 2 years in a row, but it probably won't be glass backing, maybe polished aluminum via iPad. Speakers are due for improvement, and don't get too hopeful for an integrated mic, that would just make it a mini iPhone in Apple's eyes. As for GPS, also a 50/50. I don't understand why you'd give iPod touch maps if you're not even going to use them most of the time. Just my thoughts, take them any way you want. (Also I agree with current 3G pricing.)

They really should make it so that a 16gb should be in the lineup.

the only thing i would change in your list is that the ipod touch will get the new A4 processor and it would get 512mb of ram. def a redesign. maybe with a aluminum back a la iPad or the glass back like the iphones as apple seemed to really tout the glass thing at WWDC and maybe the wifi being integrated into a steel band?

The A4 is almost definitely going to be in the iPod Touch 4G. Not sure about the 512mb of ram though. The Touch NEEDS a redesign. I dont care what it is as long as it's not chrome. I dont care about the wifi intergration either. The thing i want most is a 16gb/32gb for $199.

I don't see a glass back, apple always tried to make it look different from the iPhone, and they also don't need those side fancy antennas since it only has Wifi Bluetooth, and hopefully GPS

My Realistic List:
- gyroscope
- retina display
- iPad-like back
- 16GB 3G and 32/64GB 4G going for $199/299/399
- Facetime Cam
- A4 + 512MB RAM
:apple: A Back Camera has been rumored a lot, almost certain, hopefully they can fit the iPhone 4 Cam on the back with a new shape they make

My Surreal Wishlist:
GPS + Compass
128GB Version
Integrated microphone

I don't think they should redesign with the aluminum back. The models we currently have have to be secured in cases. They scratch WAY too easily and I think I'd like to see something like the casing for the HTC Desire. (this being my phone) Only because it doesn't scratch so much.

What I'd like to see, that we would ALL like to see in fact... working Bluetooth! :D Which enables us to send and receive files... obviously Apple would limit it to being iPod to iPod or iPhone and so on to stop us from having illegal downloads (Music, videos etc...)

I can't imagine retina scanning though :/ what would be the point in that? A way to unlock your device? There's be SO many faults with that!

I have a feeling there's going to be a major redesign and hardware upgrade with the 4th gen touch. There really hasn't been any major improvements in the ipod touch (besides speed and battery life) at all since the 1st generation (which I have), and it has had the same design for two years. Here are my predictions:

Things that will definitely be added:

-retina display
-3.2 mp camera on the back
-A4 Processor
-Gyroscope
-Better Battery
-Major re-design

Things that may be added:
-Front facing face time camera
-5mp camera on the back (same as on iPhone)

Things that would be awesome but probably won't happen:
-GPS
-3g (like on the ipad)

Not retina scanning, retina display. It's just a nice high resolution screen the iPhone4 recently got.

As much as I would love to see the retina display there is a good chance we might not get it with this refresh. Apple might already have a lot of the old displays in inventory they need to clear out.

gyroscope and a4 chip is a real must though. Without those two the app store would really get fragmented.

Why would you want a Compass? There will only be GPS if there will be 3G data plans, which there will not, it will cut into the iPad sales. We should get a Retina, as most apps are compatible with it already. Same with gyro.
