I use on for both. I scratched my original iPad when the tip of a pen glided across it. Should not have scratched it but it did. Every since then, they have been protected.

Get a Smart Cover and forget about the screen protectors.

I do use Smart Covers, but they only protect the screen when closed, that is, when I'm not using the iPad. But accidents can happen any time, and probably tends to happen more often when the iPad is in use than when it's not.

Again, right now, as I was typing this post, my cat jumped on my lap, hitting the screen with its claws. Yet another moment of many that makes me glad to have a screen protector.

i put covers and screen protectors
they do not diminuish the experience, it just feels less nice on the look (iphone)
however in case i want to resell it somedays it does help a lot. (forget also the engravings)

once the damage is done (back or front) you are gonna cry for not having spent 20-40 dollars more on those things.

I may get a screen protector. The iPad air screen feels weird, not smooth. It's either my hands or the screen has a rubbery feeling to It.

The iPad (1st gen) doesn't support "Smart Case" or "Smart Cover"!

Alright then whatever the #$%^ Apple was calling the case that wrapped around the entire iPad and had a cover very similar to a smartcase.

really? ...hmmm... my first iPhone was a 3G, and, afraid of dropping and scratching or breaking it, got screen protection right away. I've always done so since, mainly zagg invisible shield. ...I'm about to replace my iPad 1st gen w/iPad mini...and I used to make sure I had a screen protector on from day 1...is this just paranoia? ...I'm thinking I may just need to be extra careful until I get a case, but, no need for screen protection? ...my iPhone 5 lasted only days without screen protector, but, it did seem like I was covering part of the touchscreen experience. However, with it, it is a cell phone in my pocket and much more subject to being dropped, I would hate to drop it and have the screen break, especially out of warranty and no insurance or applecare.

I'm all for having a case and I have dropped my phone on a few occasions but I just don't see the need for a screen protector.

LOL! I think it was simply called the Apple iPad case. It's not "smart" because there's no on/off function via magnets.

I had the same experience, thought my hands were just greasy or something at first.
After a few days with no change, I threw on a cheap screen protector from Amazon.

Feels wonderful now, and I find myself wiping the screen less since it's not creating as many finger smudges.

DO NOT get a screen protector for any of your iDevices. Worthless and they diminish the experience.

How so? Please explain.

Personally I've always had a cheap-o screen protector on every iDevice I've ever owned. It's only enhanced my enjoyment, not lessened it. For one it makes cleaning the screen easier b/c you can use any off the shelf cleaner & not worry about damaging the oleophobic coating. Next it makes it more life proof when the kid thinks a marker is a good stylus. D'oh! No prob just peel off the mess.

I'm not saying its a must for everyone but I reject your statement that it's not good for anyone.

I whole heartedly disagree with those saying a screen protector is not needed. I take extremely great care of my devices but I would still put a screen protector on any device that had a screen. It in no way diminishes the user experience but provides piece of mind as well as the likely hood of better resell value. If I'm buying a £739 device with a screen then I'm going to put a screen protector on it even if I am using a Smart Cover or some kind of case.

I was using Zagg screen protectors, but even the HD versions are awful looking (and feel worse). I have a brand new in box HD Zagg if anyone wants it, PM me.

I found screen protectors at the dollar store, and they were pretty nice! Both Mini and iPad 2/3/4 are a dollar. They did get a little bit of a rainbow effect, however.

When I bought my HTC One last month, I bought Super Shieldz from eBay. They were $4 for 4, and go on dry with a light adhesive. It is possible to get all the dust out by carefully cleaning, and using the lift and tack Scotch tape method. I was surprised to find them available for the Air this weekend, and they're already here (they ship from less than 15 miles away :D ), and I now have a perfectly installed screen protector that doesn't detract from the experience. No rainbow effect, and glassy smooth. I paid $7 for 3 of them, so I'm good for a while.

Stuff happens, and I like to be covered. I can see zero difference with the screen protector on (unless it's a Zagg), and my experience is enhanced because I don't have to worry about stuff. ;)

I use a Spigen Glas.t on my phone, and I am buying one for my iPad Mini wrd as soon as I get it. In fact, I won't take the iPad out of the house until it's protected properly.

A screen protector is worth it purely for the peace of mind, I feel.

Anyone have experience with the ArmorSuit MilitaryShield?

I also use screen protector, but only because I sell these devices as soon as the new ones come out. In my experience, people will likely pay for the price you're asking if the learn that a screen protector has been applied since it came out of the box. I never use a case, though. That's as naked as all my idevices can go.

Don't use the makers of body skins for a screen protector. Basically avoid Zagg, Bestskinsever, etc and put on dry install screen protector Power Support or Tech Armor (haven't tried them personally but heard good things).

OK so I bought the iSmooth screen protector on amazon for 10 bucks, fits great, no bubbles, feels great, handles fingerprints well, highly recommended!! The Zagg screen protector absolutely sucked and cost me $35 at bestbuy and it was horrible, wet application, full of bubbles, the worst! learn from my mistake and buy iSmooth.

I always used PowerSupport screensavers.
As for the smart case never used. Now with my iPad 3 am using a smart cover. I never liked the iPad cover with sleeves.

Are the size/cutouts for the non-retina/retina iPad mini models exactly the same? :apple:

I used to have a protector on my iPad 2...the screen just doesn't feel right with it on, so I removed it.

Got ghost armor installed at the mall. I still prefer it over zagg hd. It's got more coverage, it's cheaper, more grip and less finger prints.

Really need a screen protector??

I use screen protectors for all ofmy devices including my iPad air. I use tech armor for everything.

I have always been a loyal Power Support crystal clear screen protector user. That's until this time when Power Support was months behind the Air with their release and I saw your recommendation. I tried the Tech Armor and so far very happy. First batch I couldn't get a clean install. Realized after I wrecked the 2nd in the package that my new sweater I was wearing was producing crazy lint which would find its way under the protector. I requested another set and got a perfect install on the first try. The Tech Armor feels and looks like a bare screen. What more could you ask for?

You can ask for more screen protectors from tech armor is what you can do!

Yes, that's exactly what I did, requested more and got a perfect install with the first one in the 2nd batch. I'll most likely be all set now cause I got such a perfect install that I won't want to replace this one. I'm a little anal when putting these on and go crazy if not perfectly aligned or I get even one speck of dust underneath. My family all come to me for screen protector installs. Even at work, co-workers will bring their screen protectors to me.

I already got an iPhone 5 and iPad air replacement coming...
I review screen protectors from companies and post them in Amazon. I also get to practice putting them on many times. I like them going on perfectly as well.
