I use on for both. I scratched my original iPad when the tip of a pen glided across it. Should not have scratched it but it did. Every since then, they have been protected.
Get a Smart Cover and forget about the screen protectors.
The iPad (1st gen) doesn't support "Smart Case" or "Smart Cover"!
really? ...hmmm... my first iPhone was a 3G, and, afraid of dropping and scratching or breaking it, got screen protection right away. I've always done so since, mainly zagg invisible shield. ...I'm about to replace my iPad 1st gen w/iPad mini...and I used to make sure I had a screen protector on from day 1...is this just paranoia? ...I'm thinking I may just need to be extra careful until I get a case, but, no need for screen protection? ...my iPhone 5 lasted only days without screen protector, but, it did seem like I was covering part of the touchscreen experience. However, with it, it is a cell phone in my pocket and much more subject to being dropped, I would hate to drop it and have the screen break, especially out of warranty and no insurance or applecare.

Alright then whatever the #$%^ Apple was calling the case that wrapped around the entire iPad and had a cover very similar to a smartcase.

I had the same experience, thought my hands were just greasy or something at first.I may get a screen protector. The iPad air screen feels weird, not smooth. It's either my hands or the screen has a rubbery feeling to It.
DO NOT get a screen protector for any of your iDevices. Worthless and they diminish the experience.
I was using Zagg screen protectors, but even the HD versions are awful looking (and feel worse). I have a brand new in box HD Zagg if anyone wants it, PM me.
I found screen protectors at the dollar store, and they were pretty nice! Both Mini and iPad 2/3/4 are a dollar. They did get a little bit of a rainbow effect, however.
When I bought my HTC One last month, I bought Super Shieldz from eBay. They were $4 for 4, and go on dry with a light adhesive. It is possible to get all the dust out by carefully cleaning, and using the lift and tack Scotch tape method. I was surprised to find them available for the Air this weekend, and they're already here (they ship from less than 15 miles away), and I now have a perfectly installed screen protector that doesn't detract from the experience. No rainbow effect, and glassy smooth. I paid $7 for 3 of them, so I'm good for a while.
Stuff happens, and I like to be covered. I can see zero difference with the screen protector on (unless it's a Zagg), and my experience is enhanced because I don't have to worry about stuff.![]()
I use screen protectors for al my device including my iPad air. I use tech armor for everything.
Tech Armor Apple iPad Air (Generation 5) Premium High Definition (HD) Clear Screen Protector with Lifetime Replacement Warranty [2-PACK] - Retail Packaging

I have always been a loyal Power Support crystal clear screen protector user. That's until this time when Power Support was months behind the Air with their release and I saw your recommendation. I tried the Tech Armor and so far very happy. First batch I couldn't get a clean install. Realized after I wrecked the 2nd in the package that my new sweater I was wearing was producing crazy lint which would find its way under the protector. I requested another set and got a perfect install on the first try. The Tech Armor feels and looks like a bare screen. What more could you ask for?
You can ask for more screen protectors from tech armor is what you can do!
Yes, that's exactly what I did, requested more and got a perfect install with the first one in the 2nd batch. I'll most likely be all set now cause I got such a perfect install that I won't want to replace this one. I'm a little anal when putting these on and go crazy if not perfectly aligned or I get even one speck of dust underneath. My family all come to me for screen protector installs. Even at work, co-workers will bring them in for me to install.
