Don't pry with knives! Knives are not prying tools!

Now that that's out of the way, if it makes you feel any better, I had a dumb knife-related accident with my UMBP about a month after I got it.

Same scenario, UMBP went in a hard-shell case right out of the box to keep it pretty.

I was flipping a Spyderco Caly 3 open and closed to wear in the lock while using the computer. I didn't realize how close to the case I was getting, and somewhere around the 20th flick/close, there was a solid "Thock" as the tip of the knife stopped against the palm rest.

The spot is so tiny it's barely visible, but I couldn't un-see it for a few weeks afterward.

Happens with Cars, and with all nice, new, shiny things. It bugs you because you know it's there, even if no one else sees it. Try to keep yourself occupied with other, more important things. ;)

The paint on the MacBooks scratches really easily.

I don't mean to be "that guy," but the UMBP's are CNC machined, bead-blasted Aluminum. The last series to have painted parts was the late model Powerbook G4, and that was only parts of the top case.

Anyway, not putting you on the spot here, just the gadget geek in me. The UMBP line could have benefitted from some clear type III hard anodizing. They'd be a lot more scratch-resistant. :D

For Pete's sake, next time don't use a knife, use a crowbar like Gordon Freeman.

Hi, well I got my MacBook Pro for Christmas and Was waiting for my case (to protect it) to arrive for a few weeks so I was super careful with my Mac so that it didn't come to any harm... the case arrived and I stuck it on to have a look and then had some trouble getting it off again as there was a spec of dirt under it, anyway it took to using a knife (biggest mistake of my life) to get it off and now from where i was wedging the knife in-between the case and the mac theres a tiny in dent type scratch on the front... I know this is silly but this tiny mark is killing me, this is my first mac and I was bought it for my last two years of uni and it's my absolute baby... I need to know if there is any product that I can buy to correct this maybe some sort of sand paper thing I don't know I just want it fixed I would be fine about it if i'd had it for at least six months but I've barely had it a month,
This is ridiculously long sorry,
PLEASE SAY THERE IS SOMETHING FOR IT :(
It's so bad that there wasn't a mark on it until the case arrived to protect it arghhh help me please, by the way I'm not normally bothered about things like this but I've never had an object that I love so much lol I sound crazyyy!!

You can bring it to Apple and ask them to replace the casing. I believe it'll run you about $500 or so.

Personally, I live with the various outer casing scratches on my 15" Pro... As long as the inside stays pristine (as I stare at it the majority of the time), I don't really care much about the outside.

"you are the free-man"

Haha, no worries at all.. Good to know :)

At any rate, they scratch easily.

I agree. Mine's been in a Spec hardshell case from day 1, and still has scratches on the underside from debris getting in there. Which is weird, because bead-blast finishes tend to be a lot more durable than that.

What were you smoking that made you think using a knife on you computer was a good idea?

I've used a knife on my computer before! Me and a friend were cooking off a recipe on the laptop and a small piece of nut got inside the fan entrance. I removed it with big knife and my friend commented that she had never seen a person use a knife on their computer before.

I was very careful and my computer didn't receive any "damage".

I've bashed my macbook pro into walls a few times and into the naked steel frame of my bed as I was lifting it off the floor! It's got little chips in a few places but the machine still runs perfect, so no issues there! You'll learn to adapt to its imperfections!

Wut? You must be smokin' the same stuff.......

This is why I don't use snap on cases. Anyways, that does suck, but in the future try a small flat head screwdriver wrapped in cloth.
