I got a twinge and shuttered when I first read this read the head line on mac rumors. In fact I was quite distraught until I remembered what the big green ? means.

I could live with Intel if:

No Intel inside on my apple or intel blurbs on any commercial.

It was PPC, if apple goes to x86 I think I just might look at linux or maybe god forbid go outside.

Some how I doubt this I mean they have a new OS a have invested heavily in the G5. The uproar a switch would cause seems like it would hurt apple more then help.

Not sure how I feel about this...

On the one hand, I'm down for anything that makes my computer faster. On the other, this borders on blasphemy-windows and mac having the same processor?

Also, what does this mean for the immediate future of the mac, specifically powerbooks? They have to update them at some point don't they? Wouldn't it be kind of a lame duck though?

steve has some serious 'splaining to do!!!

this would be a monumental event...

The Intel sticker is really ugly and when you try to take it off it leaves marks and your machine is ruined and everyone thinks you're running Windows. What a nightmare.

Oh yeah says you. I sold a thinkpad on ebay and the guy wanted a refund because I took off the Intel sticker. He was pissed. Some idiots love it. I think some collect them.

I'm just waiting for stock prices to drop from the news of the terrible move so I can buy as much stock as I can afford. Apple likes money, they will only do something to give them more money. Going from this idea to PowerBook G5s and dual core 3GHz PowerMacs would definatelly raise stock.

2 points which I think have probably already been made, but I'm not reading 11 pages...

-This switch (if it happens) is most likely because of a combo of not reaching 3.0 GHz a year after the G5 was introduced (and even now, what... 3 years after??) and IBM's inability to get a working G5 in the PowerBook line

-Just because Intel is making the chip doesn't mean it is going to be an x86 chip. Intel could produce an entirely custom chip for Apple that has nothing to do with x86.

I don't see how this is a big deal. I'm sure Apple isn't switching just for the sake of it. If Apple believes Intel can produce better chips than IBM has, then hell yea, bring on Intel.

Duff-Man says...I really don't know what to think - many conflicting thoughts about this...so I will just wait and see before making final judgements. A couple of things I will say though - cnet does not have a very good reputation regarding Mac-related issues...and, if this actually is true, you can bet Apple has got the most well planned and thought-out transition plan - they are not stupid...they know how controversial and complicated a complete processor transition will be and would not step into such a deal without a plan which includes short term "damage control" medium term "transition control" and log term "phase out" control...if they do it they have thought about it long and hard and weighed all the options....oh yeah!

I have a good friend that used to. Now he collects anything AMD. He's not quite to the right company but he's improving...

There are worse things to collect I guess.

Egon: "I collect spores moles and fungus".

Have you seen the benchmarks on Pentium-M processors? They are god-like! I can only imagine a P-M processor in a powerbook running OSX. It would be performance heaven.
Benchmarks are just numbers and numbers can be twisted and manipulated all Intel wants. For example the MHz/GHz myth.

Funny you think that this will cause the price to drop, because on May 23rd when the WSJ published that story about Apple talking with Intel, Apple's stock went up nearly $2.

Dear God I hope this isn't true :( x86 is an archaic behemoth that's going nowhere - and besides, the PPC has a number of advantages over x86 in fields like video and image editing.

If this comes to frutition then I will stick with the REAL (PowerPC) Macs for as long as possible.

Stock will go up 20% if this is announced. Do you know how rich apple will become if they can sell a copy of OSX that runs on a Dell? Overnight riches.

Bad things usually means price drops doesn't it? I don't follow stocks, I just have (a lot) in Pepsi with dividend reinvestment. My parents got me stock in Quaker Oats when I was born 20 years ago, which was then bought by Pepsi. That's about all I know when it comes to stocks, so I just assumed it would drop.

I felt a great disturbance on the Net, as if millions of Mac users suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly pissed. I feel something terrible has happened.

Sorry. *ducks from the multiple twackings coming his way* I had too.

Well you picked up on the fact that in the future this could probably lead to improvements in Apple's sales/profits, so what makes you think that investors haven't noticed?

Of course. Intel now has ONE amazing thing to show off and that's enough for Apple to switch AGAIN? (68K->PPC) (and AGAIN! OS9->OSX)

If Apple went the x86 route (which I doubt), they'd go with AMD. If they go with intel, it's either because intel was able to license PPC and will make PPC CPUs or because of something like their Xscale CPUs.

Heck, maybe they licensed the Centrino/Pentium-M technology to allow Freescale to make low-power, dual-core G4s for the next PowerBooks (and single-core for the Mac mini, eMac and iBook).

Lower power requirements would be nice for the G5 as well.

Maybe it's cross-licensing... Intel allows IBM/Freescale to use centrino and Apple/IBM/Motorola-Freescale allows intel to use PPC. You never know!

After all, if all the new game consoles use PPC cores, intel will want a chunk of that! (for the next gen, or future versions/releases of this next gen). It would also allow intel to sign a deal so that AMD can't touch PPC with a ten foot pole.

We'll see monday, I guess.
