If Apple switches to Intel, does that imply the 970MP is dead?
It's not dead, it's, uh, resting! Remarkable chip, that 970MP. Lovely diodes.

Xserve RAID boxes also have Intel Inside® (chum, buh-doo-doo-dong!), and WWDC would be a reasonable place to announce additions to that product line.

Right, the fibrechannel controller, isn't it? Or is it the RAID controller. I'm not really sure of which, but the point is that it's not a CPU, just an important IC. I'm still betting heavily on WiMax or 802.11pre-n.

In a nutshell ... Apple will still RULE!!! (kinda like 3% of the people control 97% of the wealth). :D

Excellent point. Boys I would be buying Apple stock right now. In two years when we have the same speed as Intel Windows machines but have a kick ass software delivering faster processing in video, pictures, sound and DVD burning, who do you think will double its market share.

Anytime someone really wants you to buy stock, it makes you wonder if they're selling it...

I wouldn't buy Apple stock based on this rumor. It's just a rumor. And, as many have noted, there could be significant downsides depending on how it works out in real life.

Yay, Apple might make everyone recompile their apps to get them working on a new architecture, so is going to make their developers upset, and might turn its back on HyperTransport... let's all buy stock!

Right.

Ummm no. Apple doesn't make their own hardware now. Its all farmed out.

This post seems a tad uninformed. Would you say that Apple doesn't make iPods either because I think a few stock market analysts who have seen the profits rolling in would disagree with you. Just because fabrication and assembly takes place in another country with another company doesn't mean Apple's not the hardware maker reaping all the profits.

I just got done reading 10 pages of this thread and I began when it was at 14, now it is at 16 pages, basically my post will be lost.

In anycase.. I want to go on record and say that if Apple switches over to Intel, the platform I ran away from then I will put my Mac on ebay on Tuesday. No offense, but I am not about to have this Mac be useless 2-3 years from now if they are switching to a different processor. I'd rather put it on ebay now before the entire market realises that Apple is making the switch. If I were to wait then 5-6 months from now my Mac would be half the price, like a true Intel PC.

I still wonder what in the world Apple will do in meantime. It would be crazy for anyone to invest in a Mac knowing their CPU is about to be swapped by a whole different one. This isn't just a difference of G4 & G5, this is a whole different platform. Which is suprising since Apple hates giving out information about new product as they are scared people wont buy if they know something new is coming soon. That is why they don't post roadmaps and release dates in advance and now they are posting one for two years from now, seems fishy.

However if the news is true.. My Mac is going on ebay whether I love the machine or not but I don't want money in a platform that wont exist 2 years from now.

if intel made a PPC chip for apple it would not be much of a transition at all. mabey thats what this could be. i thnk its probly nothing though, just a bunch of crap

This is C|net fer cryin' out loud. They have a worse track record than Spymac! It's not on ThinkSecret, which has had an excellent record ever since MWSF '03, except as a repost of the original WSJ article, which they clearly note is uncorroborated by their sources.

It's not on TS, but then again, C-Net is also not a rumor site in the sense of all the Mac rumor sites.

And they're not using terms like "rumored" and "some signs." They're pretty confident. And they're featuring the report fairly prominently.

I can't call this one personally--C-Net could be wrong, and unless it means Intel PPC, I hope they ARE wrong. But C-Net being wrong is far from obvious.

And THIS is a site for Mac speculation/discussion :)

Good thing investors didn't think like that concerning the iPod. Apple might have only a couple Billion in available cash. :D

I saw it :)

I have to disagree, though - your machine won't stop doing what you bought it to do if Apple announces it's going in a different direction. At some point you might not be able to upgrade the software any more, but still, everything you can do today you should be able to do next Tuesday.

Fabrication and assembly by another company. Yeah like I said, apple doesn't make the hardware. They design it, they DON'T make it. Next.

Steve Jobs hates the reds (communists) thats why he made the video 1984. IBM is in bed with them. They are partners with Lenovo which is owned partly by the chinese govt. Steve will be damned if he is going to let the new Russia (China) make chips for his systems. He is going all american here and going with intel.

Must be the most idiotic thing I've read so far.... sounds like a bad novel! I mean didn't the term "hating the reds" go spoiled decades ago... bahh

It's an Xscale CPU with goosed I/O. Hype here, they could make one screamer of a Newton out of one of those!

My G-d, we've resorted to Haiku. Someone needs to save this forum!!

For those citing volume as a reason IBM doesn't "care" about Apple that is total bunk. Remember, Apple shares the cost of development with IBM. IBM benefits from this alliance because Apple helps them develop the PPC by lowering both the cost of development and by increasing the number of chips IBM can potentially sell. Additionally, remember, one more customer IBM has is one more customer Intel doesn't have.

He he he. Know who is on the Apple Board of Directors? McCarthy's Son Joseph McCarthy along with Al Gore. Starting to make sense now huh? LOL.

Apple is still here ... still making money ... and still the best ... 'nuff said!!

Uh, okay...have fun on Windows or Linux.

People won't abandon ship - they didn't last time, did they? OSX was in beta for years - did that stop people from buying macs knowing their OS was going to be outdated. The transition from OS9 to OSX was a much greater transition than this.

For the end user, they won't even know if an IBM or Intel is under the hood. They'll just have to think about if the new piece of software they want works on 10.5 only or 10.5 and earlier, the same way they have to do right now with 10.4 and everything before it.

All this talk about "I don't want my money in a platform that won't exist 2 years from now" doesn't make a bit of sense - did we not jump from a g4 to g5? g3 to g4? Moto to IBM? OS9 to OSX? And what about the terrifying USB leap? There isn't a single change here for the end user that's any different than a standard processor or OS upgrade. Apple will make it seamless.

Your Mac will not explode the day Intel Macs come out.
