Since you’re wasting several hours of your time transiting to Apple perhaps you should learn how to do this yourself and get the right tools? It will save you the heartache of going through this, as well as the frustration of having someone unknown to you work on your device and possibly damage it costing you even more money . . .

Because Apple will replace the broken screen as long as you are willing to pay the added cost for a screen replacement. To me this is like adding more salt to the wound at this point.

No. If Apple breaks the screen during a battery replacement they will replace the whole device free of charge.

That was not my experience when Apple did the battery service on my 6S. Why I never trusted Apple to service my devices since.

I think that might be an outlier because that's not their policy. My wife had her battery replaced under that battery gate policy, might have been the 6S, can't quite remember.

We went back in 15 minutes later once we noticed and they gave us a new one immediately.

Apple's customer support in-store is awful. Very difficult to find contact number for stores these days, and if you do often staff won't answer as they're too busy or even hang up on you to stop it ringing.

My nearest store is an hour away. Have had to transport a £1500 Studio Display to it multiple times. They don't care about inconvenience or hassle or delays in repair. They just don't. An apology means nothing. Had one Studio Display that I had to take in, was told it would take a week(!) for a repair which meant I couldn't work properly. When I did get it back it had a new scratch on the glass.

Love the products, but if you have something go wrong and don't live very close to a store, Apple is one of the worst. Very frustrating company to deal with.

It can be frustrating and why I'll soon call ahead with my 13 Mini to ensure the Apple Store has one in stock first, something I suggested to a poster a while ago who had to travel couple of hours for exactly this. I know this isn't exactly the situation you had OP.

A few years ago I sat in one of the two Apple stores in my city waiting for a battery replacement. Was all booked in, handed the OG SE in and waited an hour or so. Meanwhile I got chatting to another waiting customer with the same model, also getting a battery replacement.

So after this hour an Apple employee came up to me and told me they don't have a battery in stock, obviously the only one in stock was given to the customer I chatted to before. I commented on my frustration waiting an hour to be told this but these things can happen when concurrent event like this occur. This was frustrating but not what annoyed me.

At that stage I asked for a supervisor and asked how we can now resolve things going forward? I was prepared on my only day off to travel to the other side of town to the other Apple Store, if only they could please check for me if they have the battery in stock so I don't waste my time and travel expenses again. Well, the answer was that their system didn't allow to look into the stock of another Apple Store! I then asked if they could call the other store to ask and the young and somewhat arrogant supervisor replied that they're unable to call. Admittently I did start fuming at the absolute lack of customer service and their unwillingness to try help. I just replied that phones and communication devices are after all their business so this surely must be possible?!

I did end up travelling immediately afterwards to the store much further away. They had to order the battery and we made an appointment after a few days to have it installed, they also looked after me regarding the overall price. Suffice to say I have blacklisted that original place, as overall staff attitude over the years really has reflected the experience I had of that one day and this wasn't an isolated incident.

Since then I've had some AC+ claims with my MBP and the demeanour, customer service and quality has always been excellent at the store across town. It just became obvious that the workplace culture at the initial place was rather negative amongst most of the staff and their attitude dealing with customers reflected this.

No. If Apple breaks the screen during a battery replacement they will replace the whole device free of charge.
If they break a part (screen, camera, speaker, etc.) during a same unit repair they will replace the damaged part. Replacing a device even now is somewhat uncommon given the availability of enclosure and rear system parts.

That a fact? Apple has never repaired any of my devices they just replace with refurbs.

In this case they didn't notice the damage they did to the screen, we noticed it within 15 minutes, took it back, they just gave us a replacement straight away.

Sorry you're going through that, frustrating to say the least!

Sadly not surprised by your experience with the geniuses though. Making sure mere customers "know their place" seems to have become the standard level of customer service since the pandemic and Apple have always had the business model anyway of turning consumers into grateful sycophants only too happy to be told what they are and are not getting for their hard-earned.

Hope you get it sorted.
Apple lost the touch when Steve passed. Tim didn’t care about the whole way to treat customers, and monetized every bit of the customer. It just goes to show, the loss of goodwill of customers Tim has caused by his give every dollar to the shareholders system.

Yeah they broke the screen on my 13 mini and replaced the screen the same day. Took another 45 minutes but that's fine.

I called Apple first. They did a remote diagnostic test, determined I needed a new battery and booked the appointment. Which I therefore assumed was for the replacement itself.

The Apple Store ignored all of that, did their own diagnostic test, determined I needed a new battery and said they couldn’t install one until the next day and I’d have to come back. They were aggressively uninterested in the inconvenience to me of this.

I have submitted a formal complaint about it. Will be interesting to see how Apple handles it.
It's the time of your appointment you booked. Stores close around 8pm, service takes about 1hr-1hr30 for a swap and depending on how busy it is (you posted on Saturday which is the busiest day) they need a buffer period of at least 1hr in case any delays/issues happen. Same day services will happen if you had originally booked in for like 4pm latest, otherwise to protect everyone's time they will quote the next day to not underdeliver. Communication about this should be clearer on Apple's website when booking.

I have definitely experienced this in the past. I went to the Apple Store for a back glass replacement (XS Max) and they tried to say no one would be able to help with that today. 5 employees were standing 10 ft away all just passing time since they weren't with customers. I called Apple Support, put them on speaker, and made sure everyone around could hear. As soon as I mentioned the 5 employees standing around yet no one could help.....ALL OF A SUDDEN the manager comes over and put me with one of the employees who was then able to grab a replacement from the back and have me out the door in 20 mins. They give great service most of the time, but sometimes you gotta turn up the heat when you know they're not even trying. If you pay for AppleCare especially, don't ever let them screw you around on it. It's one thing if something just isn't in stock and must be ordered, but otherwise don't accept reasoning like they gave you.

They do have stock. But Genius Bar appointments and repair slots are different things, apparently. I was not told this when I called Apple and made the appointment.

This is crushing waste of time. And ludicrously inefficient. Also, the geniuses really don’t care.

Had this recently as well on a 17 pro in UK.

Used to be the same day always but no there was a day turnaround in reality. I was told getting a really early appointment for the Apple Store will increase your chances.

So I was stuck with the pink iPhone 13 for a day.

I love Apple and I hate anyone who criticises them.

I went in (second trip!) to collect my phone. New battery installed. £85. (Battery health: 100%)

But, they said, sometimes when they install a new battery on an old phone the screen breaks. Which is what had happened in this case.

So they had installed a new one. Price? £0.

So I have a second hand iPhone 13 mini with new battery and new screen.

Yay.

Why would you pay to have out of warranty battery replacement for those three ancient devices? Especially at Apple battery replacement cost?
The user might still use such, battery cost (in CALIF.) is less than newer models, plus 'ancient' models use 3.5mm headphone jacks & lightning ports.
We use a 6, 6s, OGSE & SE, the 6 & OGSE both have recent Apple installed batteries.
The OGSE installed took 3 hours (2025). The 6 took less than an hour at the store (2023) but I know it is easier as I replaced the screen/front myself when I dropped it.

It is, they’ll do just about everything they can to repair the device they have on hand.

There are always going to be one-offs, but a replacement is not the norm outside of something catastrophic. If it was during battery-gate, replacing it due to damage they caused to avoid messing up the repair queues is probably a good enough reason by itself.

Both the online person I dealt with and the Apple Store I went to said that they will never, ever reveal what stock they have.

Also, good luck getting the store to answer the phone.

Since 1988.
I've got through to the stores every single time I called in the last couple of years. It was rather regarding status of AC+ repairs but at one stage asked if they had a battery in stock and they confirmed that they did.
