From my perspective, and I know that I may get flamed for this, but anybody who had a perfectly good 1st generation iPhone and upgraded to the iPhone 3G wasted their money. Are GPS in apps really that nessesary, ecspecially when the wifi/triangulation works fine? And was the slightly faster speeds all that much worth the extra $10 per month, whatever you now have to spend on text messages, and the cost of the new phone? I just don't really see how anybody can truly say how they had a legitimate reason for upgrading from the old to the new. I understand some people had the temptation to have the most up-to-date, fastest technology and may have caved in, heck, I might have too if I were on AT&T, but there just isn't really any true reason why the price of the few new features was worth it.

Many Reasons:

1) Quadroople the storage (for apps & videos)
2) Better call quality/reception
3) Improved speaker
4) 3G speed (always on the internet)
5) GPS (comes in handy)
6) Wanted a new iPhone since my launch day 2G was beat up
7) It's the latest Apple product/the best phone for me

Didnt upgrade. Love my original, still works great if not better then the 3G. Triangulation is way more then enough for me...i am smart enough to figure direction by "READING" the direction to my destination. No 3G available where I am. I get the same apps, pay less monthly, don't have to pay for sms. WiFi faster then both edge and 3G. Get the same apps as 3G users and the list goes on. Just very happy with my 1st Gen until the 3rd version comes out. I always skip a generation and in this case I think I did the right thing.

1. 3g Speed
2. GPS
3. Speaker and Voice Quality (Is something wrong with my ears or my 1st gen iPhone sounds better?)
4. Storage
5. White color

i haven't upgraded yet, but i plan to. the main reason is the data speed. to have real everywhere internet in your pocket, it's gotta be pretty speedy, and it's certainly worth the extra $10-15/mo. the added storage helps a lot, too. :)

If I already had an iPhone, I dont think I would have upgraded knowing what I know now about the 3G.

As it is - it was my first iPhone - so i am content. The 3G (service) is buggy at best (and I live in Atlanta - home of ATT Mobility). And the great stuff is included in the 2.0 software.

Hearing that it's buggy around here makes me glad I waited. I don't really use $20 worth of data, so I didn't see much of a point of upgrading. It'll take at least 32GB of storage to get in me, but AT&T should really give us more data plans. I have barely topped 250MB of EDGE downloaded data. With a buggy 3G network (shocking with AT&T, I know), why upgrade?

Don't overlook the battery!

I wasn't thrilled when I saw the iPhone 3G unveiled at WWDC and thought that I should stick with my 1st Gen. However, after I killed my iPhone and was given a new replacement, I turned greedy.

Yes, I do see a big difference when I use 3G.
Yes, the GPS is nice to have.

Yet with the iPhone 3G, I'm averaging 4:30 of usage. So as cool as the iPhone 3G is, I have to ration battery life to make sure I get through the day. I never had to do this on my old iPhone but if it lasted till 2.0 I’m sure I would've noticed a shorter battery life after playing games. I had the original almost a full year and rarely saw the battery gauge turn red. Now I see red almost everyday.

I also miss the feel of the metal back; it felt like it could have taken a bullet for me. The plastic back is looking better day by day and doesn't slip as easily but will always feel fragile to me.

AT&T's 3G coverage map isn't that accurate either. I drive around LA County and notice lots of spotty coverage in areas that are suppose to be solid.

Mainly because I made £100 on the swap! I sold my old iPhone for £220 and bought the new one for £99. I think thats a good deal!!!

Also, yea, the minor improvements. Shame about the back, its not bad looking, but the old one was great!

So, whatever way I look at it, it was worth upgrading, just for making £100!

Purely for the 3G. A lot of the time I'm in GPRS or 3G areas around where I live (no EDGE). GPS is nice but I have a standalone GPS already.

Pretty much. I needed some info quickly today at work with no Wifi and it damn near took me 10 minutes for information found right off Google

Edge is absolutely terrible here
