Does no one else think that Friday is actually satire?
This is what I was thinking too. It's almost like they made a list of what they would have to do to create the
worst possible song:
- Completely vapid, shallow lyrics
- Extremely repetitive lyrics and hooks
- Auto-tuned to all heck (and back)
And yet... look at how incredibly successful (?) it is. And, yes, having millions of people view your video, even if it's just to hate on it, is a form of success. The tens of thousands of dollars she's made on iTunes says a lot too.
So if Rebecca Black and gang are enjoying a well-played joke on the rest of the world, then that's awesome for them. But if not (and most likely not)... boy, what does this say about the state of music today. When you can literally take a song about nothing, apply all kinds of autotuning (so no singing talent is actually necessary), put together a video and become an instant superstar.
She's a cute looking kid and I bet she actually can sing, which is all the more shameful that they'd butcher whatever singing talent she may have by using so much autotune. This is, by the way, the same criticism I have for Justin Bieber and his pop shtick. He
can sing (look at his early videos on YouTube), but he doesn't
have to anymore because of all the vocal processing! I think all you need to be a pop star today is the ability to do some dance movies and have swagger. The effects (and lip-syncing) take care of the rest...
(Also, Rebecca's in for a rude shock when she gets to high school and realizes that, rather than partying, partying, partying, fun, fun, fun, fun, she'll need to worry about summatives and homework and projects and deadlines, working, getting her shifts covered, paying bills, in addition to any soccer or hockey tournaments or whatever other activities she might be involved in...)
