well.....
i called applecare and the only new thing they had we do was delete the power management plist.

just did it, no way to tell yet if this'll fix the problem, but it's something to try at least rather than go through the hassle of replacing the machine......

I recieve my mac pro this comming Friday, is it safe to say it it will have this issue or not. I want to have to have the option to return it if necessary within the return period and not be held down with a machine that doesn't function as advertised. I can wait for rev2 when they sort this out if indeed it is a hardware issue.

it's still doing it.

just had a reboot on a wake, which is actually the first time it's done that, all the other times were kernel panics.

Is the SMC + PRAM reset solution working for everybody? I noticed that my machine started doing this after I ran smcFanControl, which makes me think that it's bad SMC drivers causing this. Other than this small issue, I LOVE the new machine. Trying this solution now..

Mine does it every now and then. But I've waited for this damn thing for so long I'll just live with it until they come out with a fix for it. I don't want the Apple Store holding onto it for three weeks only to just give me another one which will probably do it too.

With the amount of people reporting this problem, they're gonna have to address it sooner or later. They should really consider sinking some of that 14 billion into quality control.

Mine does this all the time.

I'm running with a 500GB, a 750GB and a 1TB Seagate 7200.11/10/11 drives. I installed an extra 4GB from OWC, so I have 6GB.

Tried resetting the power controller and PRAM, tried installing 10.5.2 and it still does it.

For now, I've turned sleep off, and I just keep the machine switched on. That's OK in winter - 'cos it's good for the machine to help heat my house. In summer, I'm going to need this thing to sleep properly though.

Apart from this issue the machine is fine, so I don't want to return it.

Not sure about the fan thing, but I wonder if all the people with the sleep problem also had addtional RAM from OWC...

Mine did it before I fitted the OWC RAM, and it still does it now.

BTW, anyone experiencing lockup issues too? I've had 3 occasions (I think) in 3 weeks where the system has locked when Safari was running. The last time was last night - running on 10.5.2

Mine has done it every time it' fallen asleep so far..

So, no more falling asleep I guess.. Go apple, people complain about stand-by etc. consuming energy, this is worse.. :p

Mine did it once the day I got it after 1 hr of sleep. The next day I did the PRAM/SMC reset and it hasn't done it again for a full 24 hrs.

no, i did all that stuff and it's still doing it.

i don't really want to go through the hassle of an exchange either, (since other than this i've had literally zero problems), but i plan on using this machine for years.....

The way I see it, we're bound to see a solution to this pretty soon, as it's a very big flaw affecting a lot of customers. I won't exchange this machine until they come out and say it's a hardware-error, in which case they are bound to offer free service for everyone affected I would think. I'm hoping for for an update that will fix it though.

Same here. It's the only issue I have with my Mac Pro and since it's not exactly a huge deal for me, I can't see going through the hassle of exchanging my system for a new one unless I absolutely have to. Here's to hoping for a software fix in the very near future.

Wake from sleep reboot happened once to me since delivery on 2/12. But I've only slept the computer 3 times (all for only a few minutes) since I'm backing up over 20GB to mozy.com (estimated to take 8 days).

Boot Drive: 750GB Hitachi
plus another 750GB Hitachi, 320GB Seagate (Apple) and 400GB Seagate from old G4. The reboot happened after 10.5.2 update but before PRAM reset.

i just got mine today and only woke it up from sleep 3 times and it hasnt done a restart from sleep. stock 320hdd and ram. im going to run it like this for a few weeks before adding anything new.

question:

why put it to sleep?
why not just 'shut down' at night, and then boot up in the morning?
power savings? how significant is that?

Nothing to do with power savings. It's about electrical "shock". Whenever you turn on a solid state device you get an initial large inrush of current that "shocks" the electrical components. This "shocking" will over time shorten the service life of the electrical components. An analogy would be your waking up in the morning not to a gentle soft song on the radio but to a bucket of ice water being dumped on you. Your heart would race and your blood pressure would skyrocket.
Putting a CPU to sleep still keeps it electrically active. The only difference is that the hard drive heads are parked and all electric motors spin down. Sleep is much gentler on your computer than a cold startup.

the sleep issue doesn't really effect my work or anything, but i paid almost 3k for this monster and i plan on using it for years, so it better be put together right and not have flaws with basic functionality....

It's bull that they haven't fixed this problem immediately after it was discovered. I just got the reboot after waking from sleep for the first time after resetting SMC and zapping PRAM. Now I have to either deal with the hassle of sending it back and using my PC for two weeks while they mail out my replacement, and have the replacement probably still do it; or lose sleep over worrying about how the $4,000 machine I just bought can't WAKE FROM SLEEP.

This is pathetic.

I feel like canceling my order until there's a statement from Apple or at least a comment on Page 1 of Macrumors. Something to the effect "We are aware of this issue and are working to fix it." Do I really want to spend $3k on a machine and be forced to turn off sleep as a permanent work-around? The truth is I'll be using this Mac for ProTools which recommends setting sleep to "Never" anyway, but this is beside the point.

Exactly. A $600 mac mini can sleep and my 4 grand mac pro should be able to sleep as well. It's disgustingly incompetent that this is going on.

Another thing that ticks me off is that the thread on the apple discussion boards addressing the problem is listed as "answered." Really? link That seems seriously shady.

I guess the next thing I will do is call Apple. Wonderful, I'm really looking forward to this.

Mine didn't do it when I got it - sometime over the last 2 or 3 days it's started to do it consistently every sleep.

A quick PRAM reset seems to have fixed the issue for now.

Give that a try and see if it helps anyone else who has the issue.
