Am I the only one that didn't like Half Life? I just never got into it.

Yes you are :D

Joking aside I found the HL2 games to be fantastic, and if you haven't played them just get the orange box on Steam, and pray that the following is released soon.

Preys OK

Doom 3 good fun

Bioshock is fab

Quake 4, good but not as enjoyable as Quake 2

Not really a FPS, but Fallout 3 is excellent, I'm biased though cause my name is in the credits ;)

And for what it's worth, if you do have friends who also game, please get L4D, it's so much fun with mates, abit boring on your own, but get some friends in tow and you could easily get hooked.

2nd that suggestion of STALKER shadow of chernobyl (Clear Sky is the sequel, and is a bit harder but more polished but less atmospheric)

Clear sky is a prequel, it just came out later, and it has better features (faction wars). I also found it easier

Half-Life 2 is a must play.
Bioshock is another must play.
Call of Duty 4 single player not so much. CoD4 is more about multiplayer.
Call of Duty 2 single player is fantastic, however.
Crysis is also loads of fun and quite replayable, but you'll need a beefy mac.
Far Cry 2 is decent, but repetitive - again, you'll need a high-end mac.

Other good-uns:
F.E.A.R 1 and 2
Farcry 1
Brothers in Arms
Stalker (more of an RPG)
Fallout 3 (again more of an RPG)

They are a little dated these days, but the Jedi Knight series of games is rather fun, even the first one with it's cheesy FMV

Then you have real classics, like Deus Ex and Thief

- I admit i'm a tad out of the PC FPS loop, symptoms of having a Macbook with integrated graphics, hopefully i'll be getting capable of playing more modern soon ;)

Bioshock-very attractive, a must try, but some complain its too easy.

COD, COD2, COD4 yea they tend to be short but are more story driven and fun.

Crysis does give you different tactical options and it is bloody beautiful if your machine can run it.

FarCry 1 I wouldn't. It starts great and feels very open. But then it gets tedious with all the bugs, the quickly ratcheted up lethality, the corny cut-scenes and poor dialog.

Fallout3 What can I say? I'm a Fallout junkie.

Prey on the Mac is so-so, very linear. The puzzles are fun and easy. MP had lots of potential with being able to stand on different surfaces (like the ceiling), but they fell down by only offering 2 game modes DM and TDM.

Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl- I've only just started it. Atmosphere and setting are very cool so far. However, I'm kind of bored. Hopefully, it will pick up.

Deus Ex (by far the best game ever made)
Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl
Bioshock
FEAR

still need to get around to playing System Shock 2. My iMac running Tiger won't support bootcamp. :(

marathon is a classic mid 90s game that was the last thing bungie did before microsoft ate them and halo came about. it's now open source and free.

http://source.bungie.org/get/

make sure you get the high quality textures, if you can put up with some dated graphics and enemies for some cool exploration and story then this is for you, if not i'd go with half life 2 or far cry.

If you want a totally different FPS, I could also recommend SWAT 4. It's freakin hard though, and probably its difficulty and slow-paced-ness turns me off in the single player mode, but playing with a friend (even moreso LAN, so you can communicate with each other easier) does make it really fun. Naturally, you can't just run around killing/arresting people, if that's what you want to do.

COD4's single player is awesome! The stealth mission (in Pripyat') is INCREDIBLE! In fact was the reason I wanted to play COD4 :D. Other missions are good, too.

Don't get UT3 just for the campaign - its just a number of regular matches stuck together with bad story.

I hear good things about Crysis, but I haven't played it myself yet.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R games are constantly being recommended by my friends, but I haven't played them yet either ;)
