The Catcher in the Rye.

I hated this book when I read it in HS. I thought holden caulfield was a spoiled self-indulgent rich preppy brat. I couldn't relate to his character because I came from a very different class background.

I think I might have a different opinion if I read it now, though. when the book was written in 1951 - culturally you were either a child or an adult - I think most of this book is trying to make sense of this dichotomy. Teenagers today can't really relate to this internal conflict anymore because now you don't have to become an adult until well into your 20s.

anyway, when I was 14 I loved kurt vonnegut novels... slaughterhouse 5, cats cradle...
