Putting some obvious cynicism aside for the moment, you don't find it impressive that a game that huge with all it has in it is currently running on a celluar phone regardless of it being released nearly 20 years ago?

Not at all, no.
Why would anyone think that's impressive?

TWENTY YEARS AGO ... just think about that in tech progress terms.

Amazing game, might give a replay for the third time on my PS5.
Not sure how fun it will be on an iphone tho. I'd say it needs a bigger screen for the full experience.
Would have been nice to see it on the Apple TV.
One absolutely doesn’t want to miss out on experience of riding a horse into the sunset when first entering mexico through narrow mountain roads along the river in 4K with a beautiful music.

I’d add that it is RDR2, not RDR1, that is considered one of the best, if not THE best, “open world games ever”.
Nah
GTA San Andreas (& some other GTA's), Borderlands (not Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel) or even The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which the later two are way more open world than RDR1 or RDR2.

Honestly, it’s the game itself that’s impressive. Really good games age a lot better than people assume.

It’s not the technology or platform that separates good games from bad, it’s the game design itself.

Or, great older games are in more demand than the garbage that is being produced today and Apple knows that people are much more likely to love to replay Red Dead than some new steaming pile of garbage.
Apple knows?
What a silly statement.
Look at gaming as a whole on Apple ecosystem.
That tells you what Apple knows about AAA gaming.
Even Microsoft, who is in AAA gaming, is apparently alluding to defeat base on recent news articles.
Halo coming to Playstation, who'd a guessed.

Maybe, but I was quoting the original article, and both RDR2 and Witcher3 are generally touted as the best games in the genre, in large scale surveys and polls, not RDR1.

and personally, I wouldn’t say the “most” open world is the “best” open world.

It was the depth of characterisation (both people and places) and the emotional depth that made RDR2 so good, other Rockstar games were very cartoonish in comparison (although GTA4 had its moments of stretching above caricatures).

This. I still fire up the OG diablo (and d2), aoe1/2, Civ 2, etc plenty. I just replayed the og thief, as well as fallout 2 a month or so ago and reinstalled the commandos games for a replay this weekend. I’m in the middle of a replay of beneath a steel sky this week

The soul reaver games are among my favorites over the decades, that brilliant voice acting doesnt age, it’s still awesome, and pretty much all the elder scrolls games are still worth it (hell, look how much work still goes into people modding ES3 and 4)

And I’ve been using the commander keen games as my quick downtime ”play a bit” games for over 30 years now. Same with the various lemmings games

And of course games like tetris are eternal.

And that’s just scratching the surface

A good game ages better than its graphics, always has

The first two Thief games were excellent, but it was the original Deux Ex that really blew my mind - it wasn’t “open world” as such (consumer PCs weren’t up to that by that point) but it really showed how play styles could be far more “open”, rather than just FPS.

Good times.

Rockstar Games has announced that acclaimed open-world game Read Dead Redemption and its Undead Nightmare expansion pack are coming to iOS and Android early next month.

red-dead-redemption-ios.jpg

The December 2 release on mobile is part of a larger rollout for the epic Western on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Netflix.

Red Dead Redemption launched in 2010 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It follows John Marston, a former outlaw forced by federal agents to track down the remaining members of his old gang. Its successor, Red Dead Redemption 2 – released in 2018 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One – acts as a narrative prequel.

From Rockstar's website:
According to Rockstar, the new versions feature the complete single-player experiences of both games with mobile-friendly control options, and they also include bonus content from the Game of the Year Edition. It's not clear yet what the hardware requirements are or how much the games will cost to buy.

Red Dead Redemption earned multiple Game of the Year awards when it was released, and it is widely regarded as one of the best open-world games ever.

Ok. Not sure what your point is. RDR is a hugely complex game. Smartphones at the time RDR released were just in its infancy. There was no way in hell they could've put a game that large on the iPhone.

The storage space was woefully inadequate, graphics chips were mediocre at best plus, you fire up that game and when you get hungry you could grill a steak on it it would get so hot.

iPhones these days have terrabytes of storage, proper thermals and great graphics that make porting games like RDR a breeze.

Could Rockstar Games have brought it out years ago? Maybe, but the whole experience would be so painfully horrific as to be unplayable.

Is rdr1 already on switch 1? If so the vidoes i have seen is akin to comparing gta san andreas ios version against pc version - nowhere near close.

If they're going to go through the trouble of making an iOS port, why not do a little bit more and release it for iPadOS and especially the Mac?

That’s what I’m hoping. It honestly doesn’t make much sense to port to iOS/ipados , and not port to mac, e.g. resident evil

RDR1 controls are so herky jerky compared to RDR2 and modern games today. Tried it again fairly recently and it wasn’t pleasant compared to my nostalgic memories.

I’m curious - did you try the original PS3 version or the update from last year - I ask because I wonder if they took over the controller system from RDR2?

These old "recycled" games illustrate Apple's sad state. They tout their hardware as being great, which it is, but it's so poorly backed up by software that there's barely any "new" games leveraging it.

I agree.

I had this three generations ago, on my 360.

It is a great game, but can they not bring anything more recent to the platform?

I ordered a backbone gaming controller for my 17PM yesterday, but cancelled it, when I gave it more thought.

I'd rather just play this on my PS5 Pro, if anything.

"Coming soon to iOS ... Games that ran on 19 year old hardware!"

Pretty much sums up "Apple" and "Gaming".

The game was released in 2010 and only now is it coming to iOS - 2010. Yes, that 2010 - 15 years ago.

The game will be released on Android, PS5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2 too so with your logic all that can be said about those platforms too.

The true sad state of MR is that people either complain there are no games for Apple's platforms or everytime a game actually comes to Apple's platforms they have something negative to say just because they have played the game themselves and think nobody else is interested in the game, no matter how good the game actually is. At the same time the same people complain about not being able to play old 32-bit games on Mac.

3d console games are nice. But some of us want more treadmill games that can be played with simple taps while listening to music walking on the treadmill. While they may exist already, I think apple should do a better job of promoting the idea and marketing it. Maybe make an app store collection of games specifically designed as treadmill games to be played while walking on the treadmill and listening to music.
